    Quantification of the performance of iterative and non-iterative computational methods of locating partial discharges using RF measurement techniques

    Partial discharge (PD) is an electrical discharge phenomenon that occurs when the insulation materialof high voltage equipment is subjected to high electric field stress. Its occurrence can be an indication ofincipient failure within power equipment such as power transformers, underground transmission cableor switchgear. Radio frequency measurement methods can be used to detect and locate discharge sourcesby measuring the propagated electromagnetic wave arising as a result of ionic charge acceleration. Anarray of at least four receiving antennas may be employed to detect any radiated discharge signals, thenthe three dimensional position of the discharge source can be calculated using different algorithms. These algorithms fall into two categories; iterative or non-iterative. This paper evaluates, through simulation, the location performance of an iterative method (the standardleast squares method) and a non-iterative method (the Bancroft algorithm). Simulations were carried outusing (i) a "Y" shaped antenna array and (ii) a square shaped antenna array, each consisting of a four-antennas. The results show that PD location accuracy is influenced by the algorithm's error bound, thenumber of iterations and the initial values for the iterative algorithms, as well as the antenna arrangement for both the non-iterative and iterative algorithms. Furthermore, this research proposes a novel approachfor selecting adequate error bounds and number of iterations using results of the non-iterative method, thus solving some of the iterative method dependencies

    Interleukin-1 polymorphisms associated with increased risk of gastric cancer

    Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with a variety of clinical outcomes including gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer disease. The reasons for this variation are not clear, but the gastric physiological response is influenced by the severity and anatomical distribution of gastritis induced by H. pylori. Thus, individuals with gastritis predominantly localized to the antrum retain normal (or even high) acid secretion, whereas individuals with extensive corpus gastritis develop hypochlorhydria and gastric atrophy, which are presumptive precursors of gastric cancer. Here we report that interleukin-1 gene cluster polymorphisms suspected of enhancing production of interleukin-1-beta are associated with an increased risk of both hypochlorhydria induced by H. pylori and gastric cancer. Two of these polymorphism are in near-complete linkage disequilibrium and one is a TATA-box polymorphism that markedly affects DNA-protein interactions in vitro. The association with disease may be explained by the biological properties of interleukin-1-beta, which is an important pro-inflammatory cytokine and a powerful inhibitor of gastric acid secretion.     Molecular epidemiology and nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus among young children attending day care centers and kindergartens in Hong Kong

    OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) nasal carriage in children. METHODS: We collected nasal and nasopharyngeal swabs from 2211 children aged 2-5 years attending 79 day care centers (DCCs) and 113 kindergartens (KGs) in all 18 geographical districts in Hong Kong. RESULTS: The overall carriage rates of S. aureus and MRSA were 27.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 24.8-28.5%) and 1.3% (95% CI, 0.8-1.8%), respectively. Molecular typing (staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec [SCCmec], sequence type [ST], clonal cluster [CC]) showed that all the 28 MRSA isolates had SCCmec IV (n = 13) or V (n = 15) including 12 isolates with community-associated-MRSA genotypes (ST59-IV/V, ST30-IV and ST88-V), 10 isolates with healthcare-associated-MRSA genotypes (ST45-IV/V, CC5-IV and ST630-V) and six isolates with novel genotypes (ST10-V and CC1-IV). Spa typing indicated that there was some within and between DCCs/KGs transmission of certain MRSA and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus strains but this was not extensive. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate the potential for DCCs to be a reservoir for emerging MRSA genotypes and highlight the need to enhance education and infection control measures to reduce their cross-transmission in this population.postprin

    Carleson measures for Hilbert spaces of analytic functions on the complex half-plane

    The notion of a Carleson measure was introduced by Lennart Carleson in his proof of the Corona Theorem for H∞(D). In this paper we will define it for certain type of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions of the complex half-plane, C+, which will include Hardy, Bergman and Dirichlet spaces. We will obtain several necessary or sufficient conditions for a positive Borel measure to be Carleson by preforming tests on reproducing kernels, weighted Bergman kernels, and studying the tree model obtained from a decomposition of the complex half-plane. The Dirichlet space will be investigated in detail as a special case. Finally, we will present a control theory application of Carleson measures in determining admissibility of controls in well-posed linear evolution equations

    Theory of mind in utterance interpretation: the case from clinical pragmatics

    The cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is an area that continues to provoke intense theoretical debate among pragmatists. That utterance interpretation involves some type of mind-reading or theory of mind (ToM) is indisputable. However, theorists are divided on the exact nature of this ToM-based mechanism. In this paper, it is argued that the only type of ToM-based mechanism that can adequately represent the cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is one which reflects the rational, intentional, holistic character of interpretation. Such a ToM-based mechanism is supported on conceptual and empirical grounds. Empirical support for this view derives from the study of children and adults with pragmatic disorders. Specifically, three types of clinical case are considered. In the first case, evidence is advanced which indicates that individuals with pragmatic disorders exhibit deficits in reasoning and the use of inferences. These deficits compromise the ability of children and adults with pragmatic disorders to comply with the rational dimension of utterance interpretation
