Preliminary note on the supposed Aboriginal rock carvings at Mersey Bluff, Devonport
The supposed Tasmanian Aboriginal Rock-Carvings at
Mersey Bluff, Devon port, were !brought under the notice of this
Society by Mr. A. L. Meston, M.A., in a lecture delivered on
20th April, 1931. In conversation, Mr. H. Stuart Dove,
F.Z.S., of Devonport, has informed me he has known of the
existence of the markings for a number of years, his attention
having first been called to them ·by Mr. Leek about 1914.
Mr. Duve has also courteously supplied me with a copy of an
article on the subject, illustrated by three figures, contributed
by him to The Australasian of 15th September, 1923
Observations on some Tasmanian fishes: Part XX
Three species, Atypichthys strigatus (Gunther), Kathetostoma giganteum Haast, Navodon multiradiata (Gunther), are reported for the first time from Tasmania. The inclusion in the local list of Vincentia novaehollandiae (Valenciennes), on which doubt had been cast by recognition of the validity of V. lemprieri (Johnston), is confirmed~ General observations are made on the following species: Squatina australia Regan, Alahes dorsalis (Richardson), Alabes rufus (Macleay), Anguilla reinhapdtii Steindachner, Scorpis lineolatus Kner, Kathetostoma laeve (Bloch &Schneider), Gnathanacanthus goetzeii Bleeker. A key to the Tasmanian species of Alabetidae is supplied
Notes on the gobies recorded from Tasmania, with description of a new genus
Four species of Gobiidae have at various times been accredited
to Tasmania. It cannot be said, however, that our knowledge of
the members of the family occurring in our waters at present rests
on a very satisfactory footing. In the present paper, the more
precise scope and conclusions of which are summarized in the concluding
paragraph, some notes on the recorded forms are given,
and a new genus is described.
Registration numbers are those of the Queen Victoria Museum,
Launceston
Observations on some Tasmanian fishes: Part XXX
ANGUILLIDAE. Anguilla australis Richardson, 1841: a xanthic example is reported.
TRACHIPTERIDAE. (a) Trachipterus arawatae Clarke, 1881: two large dealfish catalogued as T. jacksonensis (Ramsay, 1881) are described and figured and their taxonomic status is considered, with special reference to differential growth in T. arawatae and in the present material, it being concluded Ramsay's species is a senior synonym of Clarke's; (b) Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1820): a Tasmanian specimen previously referred provisionally to this species is here definitively ascribed to it and is made the subject of some additional observations.
BOVICHTHYIDAE. Bovichthus variegatus Richardson, 1846: several good series from Greens Beach, northern Tasmania, allow the study of growth and form in a geographically homogeneous population. ATTENNARIIDAE. Kuiterichthys furcipilis (Cuvier, 1817): observations are made on this species, recently added to the Tasmanian list
