Transverse Spin Structure of the Nucleon through Target Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Reaction at Jefferson Lab
Jefferson Lab (JLab) 12 GeV energy upgrade provides a golden opportunity to
perform precision studies of the transverse spin and
transverse-momentum-dependent structure in the valence quark region for both
the proton and the neutron. In this paper, we focus our discussion on a
recently approved experiment on the neutron as an example of the precision
studies planned at JLab. The new experiment will perform precision measurements
of target Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive electro-production
of charged pions from a 40-cm long transversely polarized He target in
Deep-Inelastic-Scattering kinematics using 11 and 8.8 GeV electron beams. This
new coincidence experiment in Hall A will employ a newly proposed solenoid
spectrometer (SoLID). The large acceptance spectrometer and the high polarized
luminosity will provide precise 4-D (, , and ) data on the
Collins, Sivers, and pretzelocity asymmetries for the neutron through the
azimuthal angular dependence. The full 2 azimuthal angular coverage in the
lab is essential in controlling the systematic uncertainties. The results from
this experiment, when combined with the proton Collins asymmetry measurement
and the Collins fragmentation function determined from the ee collision
data, will allow for a quark flavor separation in order to achieve a
determination of the tensor charge of the d quark to a 10% accuracy. The
extracted Sivers and pretzelocity asymmetries will provide important
information to understand the correlations between the quark orbital angular

Attention-dependent modulation of cortical taste circuits revealed by granger causality with signal-dependent noise
We show, for the first time, that in cortical areas, for example the insular, orbitofrontal, and lateral prefrontal cortex, there is signal-dependent noise in the fMRI blood-oxygen level dependent (BOLD) time series, with the variance of the noise increasing approximately linearly with the square of the signal. Classical Granger causal models are based on autoregressive models with time invariant covariance structure, and thus do not take this signal-dependent noise into account. To address this limitation, here we describe a Granger causal model with signal-dependent noise, and a novel, likelihood ratio test for causal inferences. We apply this approach to the data from an fMRI study to investigate the source of the top-down attentional control of taste intensity and taste pleasantness processing. The Granger causality with signal-dependent noise analysis reveals effects not identified by classical Granger causal analysis. In particular, there is a top-down effect from the posterior lateral prefrontal cortex to the insular taste cortex during attention to intensity but not to pleasantness, and there is a top-down effect from the anterior and posterior lateral prefrontal cortex to the orbitofrontal cortex during attention to pleasantness but not to intensity. In addition, there is stronger forward effective connectivity from the insular taste cortex to the orbitofrontal cortex during attention to pleasantness than during attention to intensity. These findings indicate the importance of explicitly modeling signal-dependent noise in functional neuroimaging, and reveal some of the processes involved in a biased activation theory of selective attention
Leptonic Decays of Heavy Quarks on the Lattice
The status of lattice calculations of heavy-light decay constants and of the
parameter is reviewed. After describing the lattice approach to heavy
quark systems, the main results are discussed, with special emphasis on the
systematic errors in present lattice calculations. A detailed analysis of the
continuum limit for decay constants is performed. The implications of lattice

Turbulent Diffusion and Turbulent Thermal Diffusion of Aerosols in Stratified Atmospheric Flows
The paper analyzes the phenomenon of turbulent thermal diffusion in the Earth
atmosphere, its relation to the turbulent diffusion and its potential impact on
aerosol distribution. This phenomenon was predicted theoretically more than 10
years ago and detected recently in the laboratory experiments. This effect
causes a non-diffusive flux of aerosols in the direction of the heat flux and
results in formation of long-living aerosol layers in the vicinity of
temperature inversions. We demonstrated that the theory of turbulent thermal
diffusion explains the GOMOS aerosol observations near the tropopause (i.e.,
the observed shape of aerosol vertical profiles with elevated concentrations
located almost symmetrically with respect to temperature profile). In
combination with the derived expression for the dependence of the turbulent
thermal diffusion ratio on the turbulent diffusion, these measurements yield an
independent method for determining the coefficient of turbulent diffusion at
the tropopause. We evaluated the impact of turbulent thermal diffusion to the
lower-troposphere vertical profiles of aerosol concentration by means of
numerical dispersion modelling, and found a regular upward forcing of aerosols
with coarse particles affected stronger than fine aerosols.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

Cytotoxic chemotherapy for incurable colorectal cancer: living with a PICC-line
<b>Aims.</b> (i) To determine which aspects of living with a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line cause Modified de Gramont (MdG) patients most difficulty. (ii) To explore MdG patients' views of the PICC-line experience. (iii) To determine if patients view PICC-lines as a benefit or a burden when receiving ambulatory MdG chemotherapy.
<b>Design.</b> A two-stage, descriptive study.
<b>Methods.</b> Phase 1 comprised semi-structured interviews. Phase 2 surveyed the MdG population. Phase 1 interview data informed the Phase 2 questionnaire. The setting was a West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre and the sample was: Phase 1, a convenience sample of 10 MdG patients; Phase 2, 62 consecutive patients.
<b>Results.</b> A response rate of 93·9% for Phase 2. The majority of PICC-line patients held favourable views towards having a PICC-line and adapted well with minimal disruption to daily life. Concerns were evident regarding coping at home with a PICC-line, chemotherapy spillage, dealing with complex information and the responsibility of patients/carers regarding PICC-line management. Patients preferred ambulatory chemotherapy to in-patient treatment.
<b>Conclusions.</b> PICC-lines should be considered for more chemotherapy patients but service development is necessary to ensure individual needs are addressed.
<b>Relevance to clinical practice.</b> Contributes to the PICC-line literature by providing a national patient perspective on a range of daily living activities (DLAs). PICC-line patients prefer out-patient ambulatory chemotherapy rather than in-patient treatment. The longer a patient has a PICC-line, the more able they are to manage activities such as dressing. Concerns remain over chemotherapy spillage, partner/carer responsibility for PICC-line maintenance and the proper balance between required information and what the patient wants to know

The impact of land use/land cover scale on modelling urban ecosystem services
Context
Urbanisation places increasing stress on ecosystem services; however existing methods and data for testing relationships between service delivery and urban landscapes remain imprecise and uncertain. Unknown impacts of scale are among several factors that complicate research. This study models ecosystem services in the urban area comprising the towns of Milton Keynes, Bedford and Luton which together represent a wide range of the urban forms present in the UK.
Objectives
The objectives of this study were to test (1) the sensitivity of ecosystem service model outputs to the spatial resolution of input data, and (2) whether any resultant scale dependency is constant across different ecosystem services and model approaches (e.g. stock- versus flow-based).
Methods
Carbon storage, sediment erosion, and pollination were modelled with the InVEST framework using input data representative of common coarse (25 m) and fine (5 m) spatial resolutions.
Results
Fine scale analysis generated higher estimates of total carbon storage (9.32 vs. 7.17 kg m−2) and much lower potential sediment erosion estimates (6.4 vs. 18.1 Mg km−2 year−1) than analyses conducted at coarser resolutions; however coarse-scale analysis estimated more abundant pollination service provision.
Conclusions
Scale sensitivities depend on the type of service being modelled; stock estimates (e.g. carbon storage) are most sensitive to aggregation across scales, dynamic flow models (e.g. sediment erosion) are most sensitive to spatial resolution, and ecological process models involving both stocks and dynamics (e.g. pollination) are sensitive to both. Care must be taken to select model data appropriate to the scale of inquiry
Altered multisensory temporal integration in obesity
Eating is a multisensory behavior. The act of placing food in the mouth provides us with a variety of sensory information, including gustatory, olfactory, somatosensory, visual, and auditory. Evidence suggests altered eating behavior in obesity. Nonetheless, multisensory integration in obesity has been scantily investigated so far. Starting from this gap in the literature, we seek to provide the first comprehensive investigation of multisensory integration in obesity. Twenty male obese participants and twenty male healthy-weight participants took part in the study aimed at describing the multisensory temporal binding window (TBW). The TBW is defined as the range of stimulus onset asynchrony in which multiple sensory inputs have a high probability of being integrated. To investigate possible multisensory temporal processing deficits in obesity, we investigated performance in two multisensory audiovisual temporal tasks, namely simultaneity judgment and temporal order judgment. Results showed a wider TBW in obese participants as compared to healthy-weight controls. This holds true for both the simultaneity judgment and the temporal order judgment tasks. An explanatory hypothesis would regard the effect of metabolic alterations and low-grade inflammatory state, clinically observed in obesity, on the temporal organization of brain ongoing activity, which one of the neural mechanisms enabling multisensory integration
Global gene expression analysis of canine osteosarcoma stem cells reveals a novel role for COX-2 in tumour initiation
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumour of both children and dogs. It is an aggressive tumour in both species with a rapid clinical course leading ultimately to metastasis. In dogs and children distant metastasis occurs in >80% of individuals treated by surgery alone. Both canine and human osteosarcoma has been shown to contain a sub-population of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which may drive tumour growth, recurrence and metastasis, suggesting that naturally occurring canine osteosarcoma could act as a preclinical model for the human disease. Here we report the successful isolation of CSCs from primary canine osteosarcoma, as well as established cell lines. We show that these cells can form tumourspheres, and demonstrate relative resistance to chemotherapy. We demonstrate similar results for the human osteosarcma cell lines, U2OS and SAOS2. Utilizing the Affymetrix canine microarray, we are able to definitively show that there are significant differences in global gene expression profiles of isolated osteosarcoma stem cells and the daughter adherent cells. We identified 13,221 significant differences (p = 0.05), and significantly, COX-2 was expressed 141-fold more in CSC spheres than daughter adherent cells. To study the role of COX-2 expression in CSCs we utilized the COX-2 inhibitors meloxicam and mavacoxib. We found that COX-2 inhibition had no effect on CSC growth, or resistance to chemotherapy. However inhibition of COX-2 in daughter cells prevented sphere formation, indicating a potential significant role for COX-2 in tumour initiation
