Bajo las nuevas propuestas de 'economía verde' destaca el uso energético que se le quiere dar a la Naturaleza, tanto los ya conocidos cultivos para usos energéticos -los agrocombustibles- como también el uso indiscriminado de árboles y residuos vegetales -la biomasa-. Presentamos a modo de una incipiente discusión, la problemática de estos cultivos y usos como fallida o engañosa receta a la crisis climática
From a fossil-fuel to a biobased economy : the politics of industrial biotechnology
Industrial biotechnology involves the replacement of petrochemical processes and inputs with more energy-efficient and renewable biological ones. It is already being used in the production of biofuels and bioplastics and has been touted as a means by which modern economies can be shifted toward a more competitive, low-carbon growth model. This paper does two things. First, it outlines the policy framework established in the European Union and the narrative of a knowledge-based bioeconomy (KBBE) underpinning this. Second, it argues that the ‘win – win’ rhetoric contained within the KBBE narrative is misleading. Among the different groups commenting on the use of industrial biotechnology, the paper locates cleavages between farmers and agribusiness, between those convinced and those sceptical of environmental technofixes, and between procorporate and anticorporate NGOs. Taken together, they show the purported transition from a fossil-fuel to a bio-based economy to be a resolutely political one

Acupressure, reflexology, and auricular acupressure for insomnia: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials
Previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that acupuncture may be efficacious for insomnia. Instead of needling, acupressure, reflexology, and auricular acupressure are procedures involving physical pressure on acupoints or reflex areas. These variants of acupuncture are gaining popularity, perhaps due to their non-invasive nature. A systematic review has therefore been conducted to examine their efficacy and safety for insomnia. Two independent researchers searched five English and 10 Chinese databases from inception to May 2010. Forty RCTs were identified for analysis. Only 10 studies used sham controls, four used double-blind design, nine studies scored three or more by the Jadad scale, and all had at least one domain with high risk of bias. Meta-analyses of the moderate-quality RCTs found that acupressure as monotherapy fared marginally better than sham control. Studies that compared auricular acupressure and sham control showed equivocal results. It was also found that acupressure, reflexology, or auricular acupressure as monotherapy or combined with routine care was significantly more efficacious than routine care or no treatment. Owing to the methodological limitations of the studies and equivocal results, the current evidence does not allow a clear conclusion on the benefits of acupressure, reflexology, and auricular acupressure for insomnia. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.postprin
Early GRB Optical and Infrared Afterglow Observations with the 2-m Robotic Liverpool Telescope
We present the first optical observations of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB)
afterglow using the 2-m robotic Liverpool Telescope (LT), which is owned and
operated by Liverpool John Moores University and situated on La Palma. We
briefly discuss the capabilities of LT and its suitability for rapid follow-up
observations of early optical and infrared GRB light curves. In particular, the
combination of aperture, site, instrumentation and rapid response (robotic
over-ride mode aided by telescope's rapid slew and fully-opening enclosure)
makes the LT ideal for investigating the nature of short bursts, optically-dark
bursts, and GRB blast-wave physics in general. We briefly describe the LT's key
position in the RoboNet-1.0 network of robotic telescopes. We present the LT
observations of GRB041006 and use its gamma-ray properties to predict the time
of the break in optical light curve, a prediction consistent with the

The Risk of Unexploded Ordnance on Construction Sites in London
Greater London, among many large cities, was subject to bombing by the German military in both the World Wars and was the target of many air raids during the Second World War (WW2). This was particularly the case during the Blitz, September 1940 – May 1941, when over 28,000 high explosive bombs and parachute mines were dropped on London. Post war research conducted in 1949 estimated that approximately 12,750 t of bombs, including V1 and V2 rockets, were dropped on London. The night of 16th – 17th April 1941 was one of the worst bombing raids, when 446 t of bombs were dropped on London and over 58 t did not detonate. Unexploded bombs remain buried underground today, as they were unidentified at the time or abandoned owing to difficulties in recovering them. Uncharted bombs continue to pose a potentially significant hazard for developments around London. This paper considers the probability of discovering unexploded ordnance (UXO), particularly WW2 ordnance, during intrusive groundworks in London. The prevalence of unexploded ordnance has been assessed using data obtained from governmental organisations to estimate the likelihood of discovery in London

Psychometric properties of the Chalder Fatigue Scale revisited: an exploratory structural equation modeling approach
Objective Previous validation studies of the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS) suffer methodological shortcomings. The present study aimed to re-evaluate its psychometric properties using exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM). Methods A Chinese sample of 1259 community-dwelling residents completed the 11-item Chinese CFS and a variety of health measures (anxiety, depression, exhaustion, sleep disturbance, and quality of life). In addition to traditional confirmatory factor analysis, ESEM was performed to assess the fit of two- and three-factor models using robust maximum likelihood estimation and oblique geomin rotation. Convergent validity of the CFS was examined via associations with five covariates (gender, age, exercise, perceived health, and life event) and the health measures in the ESEM model. Results The ESEM models displayed a superior fit to confirmatory factor models. The three-factor ESEM model showed a satisfactory model fit to the data but not for the two-factor model. The three factors were physical fatigue (three items, a = .800), low energy (four items, a = .821), and mental fatigue (four items, a = .861). The factors exhibited convergent validity with the model covariates and health measures. Conclusion The results demonstrate the satisfactory reliability and convergent validity for the three-factor structure of the CFS as a valid measure of fatigue symptoms in the general population. Future psychometric studies could adopt the ESEM approach as a practical alternative to traditional confirmatory factor analysis.published_or_final_versio
