Tribute to the Poet: Fr. Michael Costanzo, Cri de Coueur

Contains excerpts from Fr. Michael Costanzo\u27s poetry book Water Lilies: Whirlwind, Section 1, No. 2, No. 5, Desolation the Queen, No. 11 Rita, and No. 9 Horizon. In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Anyone who had the pleasure of conversing with Fr. Michael, either over coffee in his office or at the various little cafes he favored, knew him to be a very complicated man. My favorite conversations were about his love for opera (for which I remain only a neophyte) and his poetry. Ultimately, our talks led him to give me the privilege of writing the forward to his collection of poems Water Lilies. This is what I best remember of Fr. Michael and can think of no better tribute to him than to examine the complexity of his thoughts found in this particular work. Written over three decades, do not be tempted to see the change in voice as an evolution of spirit, his reflections changing with age. It is, rather, much like his beloved opera -- images of life filled with joy, despair, hope, and redemption

Easter Came Early That Year: A Eulogy to My Wife

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. The moss crumbles under my nails as I scrape away the overgrowth obscuring my grandfather\u27s name. It flakes away into powder; while a light breeze scatters the remnants over the broken lamb marking my youngest brother\u27s grave. I never knew Michael. He survived only days in the hospital unable to breathe correctly. Ironically, beside him is Bill, another brother undone by an ailing chest: pneumonia compounded with HIV/AIDS, or is it vice versa? Anyway, that was 1985 and HIV was still the gay man\u27s disease and now, seven years later, not much has really changed. Back in 1967, Bill introduced me to the music that would later define the “summer of love.” He changed my life in so many ways. My obsession with this and other music was just one

University of Missouri-Columbia 2007.Dissertations, Academic -- University of Missouri--Columbia -- Mechanical and aerospace engineering. The temporal finite element analysis (TFEA) method has been used in several publications to analyze interrupted machining dynamics. In this work, a higher order hp-version TFEA method will be presented which offers the possibility of lowering computation time. Also, in order to highlight the effect tool geometry has on stability and surface location error in milling, TFEA results that do and do not ignore helical geometry will be compared. In addition, simulation and experimental data are presented in an effort to validate TFEA results for machining Ti6Al4V using a helical tool

Cardiomyocyte stiffness in diastolic heart failure

Background - Heart failure with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) is increasingly recognized and usually referred to as diastolic heart failure (DHF). Its pathogenetic mechanism remains unclear, partly because of a lack of myocardial biopsy material. Endomyocardial biopsy samples obtained from DHF patients were therefore analyzed for collagen volume fraction (CVF) and sarcomeric protein composition and compared with control samples. Single cardiomyocytes were isolated from these biopsy samples to assess cellular contractile performance. Methods and Results - DHF patients (n=12) had an LVEF of 71 ± 11%, an LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) of 28±4 mm Hg, and no significant coronary artery stenoses. DHF patients had higher CVFs (7.5±4.0%, P<0.05) than did controls (n=8, 3.8±2.0%), and no conspicuous changes in sarcomeric protein composition were detected, Cardiomyocytes, mechanically isolated and treated with Triton X-100 to remove all membranes, were stretched to a sarcomere length of 2.2 μm and activated with solutions containing varying [Ca2+]. Compared with cardiomyocytes of controls, cardiomyocytes of DHF patients developed a similar total isometric force at maximal [Ca2+], but their resting tension (Fpassive) in the absence of Ca2+ was almost twice as high (6.6±3.0 versus 3.5±1.7 kN/m2, P<0.001). F passive and CVF combined yielded stronger correlations with LVEDP than did either alone. Administration of protein kinase A (PKA) to DHF cardiomyocytes lowered Fpassive to control values. Conclusions - DHF patients had stiffer cardiomyocytes, as evident from a higher F passive, at the same sarcomere length. Together with CVF, F passive determined in vivo diastolic LV dysfunction. Correction of this high Fpassive by PKA suggests that reduced phosphorylation of sarcomeric proteins is involved in DHF

Newspapermen\u27s Dinner: In Observance of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Publication of the Initial Issue of Bangor\u27s First Newspaper, The Bangor Weekly Register

Sample paragraph: The first number of the Bangor Weekly Register is dated Saturday, November 25, 1815. The size of the printed page was 16 1/2 by 10 inches, four columns to the page. The announcement by the editor was: The Register gives no predilection to either political party; its columns equally invite the well written productions and creditable statements of both. The object of this paper is to be a faithful chronicle of the passing events and current news and not a receptacle of party obloquy and personal abuse. No pains will be spared to select the most important official publication; the ablest essays or national economy, agricultural enterprise and mechanical ingenuity and the most judicious remarks on political events. Its columns also will be interspersed with specimens of eloquence and of taste, with biographical sketches, occasional memoirs, and such other compositions, moral and literary as may subserve the cause of liberty, virtue and religion.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1095/thumbnail.jp

The account of Maine\u27s first case of domestic violence mass murder as reported by outspoken printer and newspaper man, Peter Edes. On July 8, 1806, Betsy (Clifford) Purrinton and her children Polly, age 19; Benjamin, age 12; Anna, age 10; Nathaniel, age 8; Nathan, age 6; and Louisa, age 18 months, were murdered by James Purrinton during an alleged fit of religious fervor before he committed suicide. Fifteen-year-old Martha Purrinton was severely wounded during the attack but survived for three weeks, testifying as a witness against her father. She died July 30. The eldest Purrinton son, James, age 17, survived his wounds.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/mainebicentennial/1084/thumbnail.jp
