    Cayamo - A case study of a music themed cruise

    Purpose - This paper aims to provide a look at an unusual emerging market though its main aim is to provide a rich and colourful exercise for teaching marketing. Rich in that the teacher has a variety of options, colourful in that the student will be engaged by the language and content. Design/methodology/approach - The case study focuses on an unusual and relatively new leisure product that combines two growing areas: cruise tourism and music festivals. The case is written in a narrative style to allow student interpretation of the material and application to a range of marketing concepts. The information within the case is derived from a number of published sources including market data, internet chatrooms, blogs and an interview with a customer. Findings - The case builds to provide a picture of an innovative niche product in an emerging growth market. In the introduction, it demonstrates that popular music is no longer limited to low-income youth. The sections that follow the introduction set the scene for a (variable) market definition. Next, the experiences revealed in the Sixthman Blog show their lack of understanding of this "new product". Whilst, the personal experience that follows highlights typical customer demographics and needs. The research from Mintel pulls much of this together before leaving some thoughts for the future in the final section. Originality/value - The case can be used for teaching in a number of ways, for example, relating to market development, segmentation, targeting and marketing communications. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited

    Heavy Quark Physics From Lattice QCD

    We review the application of lattice QCD to the phenomenology of b- and c-quarks. After a short discussion of the lattice techniques used to evaluate hadronic matrix elements and the corresponding systematic uncertainties, we summarise results for leptonic decay constants, B--Bbar mixing, semileptonic and rare radiative decays. A discussion of the determination of heavy quark effective theory parameters is followed by an explanation of the difficulty in applying lattice methods to exclusive nonleptonic decays.Comment: 52 pages LaTeX with 10 eps files.     Microscopic modelling of perpendicular electronic transport in doped multiple quantum wells

    We present a microscopic calculation of transport in strongly doped superlattices where domain formation is likely to occur. Our theoretical method is based on a current formula involving the spectral functions of the system, and thus allows, in principle, a systematic investigation of various interaction mechanisms. Taking into account impurity scattering and optical phonons we obtain a good quantitative agreement with existing experimental data from Helgesen and Finstad (J. Appl. Phys. 69, 2689, (1991)). Furthermore the calculated spectral functions indicate a significant increase of the average intersubband spacing compared to the bare level differences which might explain the experimental trend.Comment: 10 pages 5 figure

    Alabama has a glorious history of strong women struggling to overcome obstacles, sometimes as movements but often in individual fights for dignity, autonomy, and survival. Imagine the strength and ingenuity it took— and takes—for a slave woman, a sharecropper, a battered wife, or a domestic worker to survive. Women in this state have also fought on behalf of others, through social movements such as the abolitionist, anti-lynching, trade unionist, prison reform, suffrage, anti-poll tax, literacy, and civil rights movements. More recently, such battles have focused on equal rights for women, protection from rape and domestic violence, child support, reproductive rights, child care, educational equity, and inheritance equity. Currently, attempts to improve the status of Alabama women are particularly focused on the continuing problems associated with poverty and relative powerlessness. Alabama organizations are examining poverty, the lack of women in decision-making positions, violence against women in the home and on the streets, and the poor health of women. So far, these contemporary efforts have at times been fragmented and lacked coordination. Now we have a guide.     Improvement of the Staggered Fermion Operators

    We present a complete and detailed derivation of the finite lattice spacing corrections to staggered fermion matrix elements. Expanding upon arguments of Sharpe, we explicitly implement the Symanzik improvement program demonstrating the absence of order aa terms in the Symanzik improved action. We propose a general program to improve fermion operators to remove O(a)O(a) corrections from their matrix elements, and demonstrate this program for the examples of matrix elements of fermion bilinears and BKB_K. We find the former does have O(a)O(a) corrections while the latter does not.Comment: 16 pages, latex, 1 figur

    Design and characterization of structured protein linkers with differing flexibilities

    Engineered fusion proteins containing two or more functional polypeptides joined by a peptide or protein linker are important for many fields of biological research. The separation distance between functional units can impact epitope access and the ability to bind with avidity; thus the availability of a variety of linkers with different lengths and degrees of rigidity would be valuable for protein design efforts. Here, we report a series of designed structured protein linkers incorporating naturally occurring protein domains and compare their properties to commonly used Gly_4Ser repeat linkers. When incorporated into the hinge region of an immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecule, flexible Gly_4Ser repeats did not result in detectable extensions of the IgG antigen-binding domains, in contrast to linkers including more rigid domains such as β2-microglobulin, Zn-α2-glycoprotein and tetratricopeptide repeats. This study adds an additional set of linkers with varying lengths and rigidities to the available linker repertoire, which may be useful for the construction of antibodies with enhanced binding properties or other fusion proteins
