Welcome to the fourth volume of Music and Arts in Action (MAiA), and MAiA’s fifth
year of publication from the Sociology of the Arts (SocArts) research group at the
University of Exeter, UK. In this general issue, we are pleased to present a host of
articles that present an array of case studies and terrains for examining the active role
of music and the arts in individual and social life. These contributions span four
countries, three continents, and a variety of art forms involving classical and amateur
levels of musical and theatrical engagement
Justice for the LSE Cleaners!
Did you ever stop to think what the LSE would look like, if the toilets and common spaces were not cleaned, and the bins never emptied? Would you be able to attend a lecture, or work in your office if someone had not performed this essential work for you

The articles in this issue address varied fields of performance: opera, rock music, and
engaged theatre. Taken together, these pieces look in detail at how individual
performers, prop-makers, directors, playwrights, composers, and others work
interactively with aesthetic materials (e.g., scripts, lights, bodies, musical scores and
instruments, etc.) to carefully design and carry out a ‘successful’ performance (both in
terms of achieving a set aim of audience impact, as well as seamlessly integrating
performer and performance). In other words, success in performance not only
requires close attention to an artistic and aesthetic narrative, but also significant
emotional and social management by individual performers to play a role in this
narrative

This issue of Music and Arts in Action (MAiA) marks the start of our second year. As
we arrive at our third issue, it has become clear that our desire to give musical and
artistic forms a more central place in the study and understanding of social life is
shared by many. This particular issue fulfils three inter-related aims of MAiA: to
extend and enhance the understanding of the role that aesthetic objects play in
everyday life, to provide a space for dialogues around this topic, and to bring into the
spotlight important work that deserves a second look
