Halogen Atom Transfer Reactions Via Metalloradical Catalysis

Thesis advisor: X. Peter ZhangHalogenated compounds are useful synthetic organic molecules. One valuable tool for synthesizing halogen containing molecules are atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reactions which can difunctionalize olefins with a halogen moiety. Many transition complexes can catalyze these reactions but have drawbacks such as the need for harsh conditions and additives. Herein we describe the first ATRA reaction catalyzed by cobalt metalloradical catalysis (Co-MRC) which shows a broad substrate scope, moderate temperatures and uses no additives. This reaction showed excellent regioselectivity, when applicable, and low levels of enantioselectivity (up to 33% ee).Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2018.Submitted to: Boston College. Generic harvest control rules for European fisheries

In European fisheries, most stocks are overfished and many are below safe biological limits, resulting in a call from the European Commission for new long-term fisheries management plans. Here, we propose a set of intuitive harvest control rules that are economically sound, compliant with international fishery agreements, based on relevant international experiences, supportive of ecosystem-based fisheries management and compatible with the biology of the fish stocks. The rules are based on the concept of maximum sustainable yield (MSY), with a precautionary target biomass that is 30% larger than that which produces MSY and with annual catches of 91% MSY. Allowable catches decline steeply when stocks fall below MSY levels and are set to zero when stocks fall below half of MSY levels. We show that the proposed rules could have prevented the collapse of the North Sea herring in the 1970s and that they can deal with strong cyclic variations in recruitment such as known for blue whiting. Compared to the current system, these rules would lead to higher long-term catches from larger stocks at lower cost and with less adverse environmental impact

Test targets 5.0: A Collaborative effort exploring the use of scientific methods for color imaging and process control

Test Targets is about scholarship that intimately involves faculty and students in the process of writing and publishing. It is a collection if research papers that require collaborative effort over a time span of three academic quarters. Initially, students learned metrology, color management system, and the use of test targets for device optimization and process control. As time goes by, students are encouraged to identify research topics, formulate methodologies, and carry out experiments and data analyses in order to have specific findings. - p.

Test Targets 4.0: A Collaborative effort exploring the use of scientific methods for color imaging and process control

Test Target 4.0 (TT4.0) is the result of student teamwork to publish a technical journal for a graduate-level course titled: Advance Color Management (Course no. 2081-735-03). Offered by the School of Print Media (SPM) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the course is a platform to experiment and to realize a new digital imaging paradigm and the dynamics of teamwork.... Team members learn scientific methodology in process control for repeatable color as well as apply ICC-based color management practices in digital workflows. They plan and conduct press run analyses reported in TT4.0, which is printed using facilities available at RIT. In producing this publication, the team learns to integrate design, content creation, digital media, and print production in a seamless workflow.... -p. 4

In general, test targets represent known values from an object or in a digital file, e.g., color patches, digital dots, lines with known dimensions, etc. The Macbeth ColorChecker is an analog target with 24 physical color patches. When captured by an input device and reproduced by an imaging system, we can compare tone and color relationships between the source target and its reproduction. On the other hand, the IT8.7/3 target is a digital file consisting of hundreds of patches with known CMYK digital values. When printed along side a signature, we can assess print quality quantitatively with the use of optical instruments and associated analysis techniques. - p. ii

Perceptions regarding the grievance policy procedure:the case of a small to medium (SME) construction business enterprise in Johannesburg

Submitted in fulfilment of:Masters in Social Work by Dissertation School of OF Human and Community Development, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand 26 July 2019Views of employees1 regarding their grievance policy procedure (GPP) have been given lesser attention, evident from little empirical studies in that regard, particularly in private non-unionised environments. External reporting and the low finalisation rates of grievances, highlight that there is insufficient knowledge from both administrators and consumers of the policy at grassroots level. Most private companies lack formal and readily available representation or assistance in their GPP from unions or boards such as the Public Service Commission (PSC). Therefore, a private Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) Construction Company was investigated with the aim to explore perceptions of workers and managers regarding their GPP. Through purposive sampling in this qualitative study, data was gathered through semi-structured interviews from 30 employees; comprising of 20 workers and 10 managers. The Occupational Social Work Practice Model (OSWPM) also regarded as the South African National defence Forces Model (SANDFM), the Person in Environment theory (PIE) and a holistically incorporated systems theory were integrated as relevant theoretical frameworks of the study. Analysis of the data was achieved through thematic data analysis, fulfilling the aim of exploring the extent of knowledge of the GPP in a private non-unionised environment. Findings revealed that culturalization of occupational environments are influenced by perceptions inherent in the workforce. The use of external grieving channels and avoidance of grieving amongst other factors were dominant employee practices that exposed unsound power dynamics at the workplace. Mal-administration of the policy by managers and an intriguing lack of knowledge of workers attributed to underutilisation of the GPP. Procedural injustices of the GPP were found to exacerbate negative perceptions of workers, which included powerlessness and the promotion of unilateral decisions within the organisation. The only positive affordance of the GPP was that it helped to reflect the constraints of the policy thereof. Recommendations of social work interventions through inductions, policy reviews, training and the use of applicable occupational social work models are included.NG (2020
