Repellency Assessment of Nepeta cataria Essential Oils and Isolated Nepetalactones on Aedes aegypti.
There is an increased need for improved and affordable insect repellents to reduce transmission of rapidly spreading diseases with high mortality rates. Natural products are often used when DEET cannot be afforded or accessed and when consumers choose not to use a synthetic repellent. The essential oils from two newly bred Nepeta cataria (catnip) plants representing two different chemotypes and their respective isolated nepetalactone isomers were evaluated as mosquito repellents against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmit the Zika and Dengue virus in a one choice landing rate inhibition assay. A dose response curve was generated for each treatment and a time course analysis of repellency was performed over 24 hours with a N. cataria essential oil sample. The results indicate that all essential oil samples and their respective purified nepetalactone isomers were able to achieve greater than 95% repellency. Between two and four hours, the ability to repel more than 95% of the mosquitoes diminished. At the lowest concentrations tested, the nepetalactones and crude essential oil samples were more effective than DEET at reducing the number of mosquito landings
Level of Depression and Suicidal Ideation among BSN Students
Undergraduate college students have been identified as at-risk population for development of suicidal ideation and depression. Student nurses are among those who experience depression and anxiety due to stressful life events. The stressful situations encountered by student nurses are multifaceted. Thus, this study explored the level of depression and suicidal ideation of BSN students and the effect of gender and year level. The need to explore these two salient factors was prompted by the need to promote and to improve school of nursing services, student safety, and decrease cases of depression and suicidal ideation among students. The study utilized a descriptive design. There were 326 student nurses who participated in the study. The questionnaire which was used for this study was based on 2 standardized self – report questionnaire. The findings showed that most of the students experienced mild to severe depression. Most of the students however, do not have suicidal ideation behavior, but almost one third of the students have a high risk for suicidal ideation behavior. Furthermore, the findings showed that gender and year level have no significant effect on the level of depression among BSN Students. Gender and year level have no significant effects in the level of suicidal ideation among student nurses. These findings can help guide the development of a school-based, prevention and promotion mental health program
Satisfaction of Student Nurses on the Academic Services in the School of Nursing
Academic services are essential resources for student nurses in their studies. These services are institutional methods which include the structure, rules, and regulations in the provision of academic services. Instructional services are skills and tools to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of student nurses. School resources are provided to students to improve their knowledge, skills and attitude. The study determined the level of satisfaction of student nurses on the academic services in the school of nursing in terms of institutional method, instructional services, and school resources, the factors that influence the academic performance of student nurses, and the difference in the level of satisfaction of the student nurses on the academic services in the school of nursing when respondents are grouped according to gender and year level. The study utilized a descriptive-survey design involving 187, first year to fourth year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students. A self-made questionnaire was used as the data gathering tool in this study. The findings of the study showed that students are moderately satisfied with the academic services rendered in the school of nursing. Teachers’ commitment and student time management influence student nurses’ satisfaction on the academic services in the school of nursing. Furthermore, the findings showed that gender, and year level has no significant effect on the level of satisfaction of student nurses on the academic services in the school of nursing. The findings imply the need for a continuous innovation of the academic services in the school of nursing
Constraints on cosmological coupling from the accretion history of supermassive black holes
Coupling of black hole mass to the cosmic expansion has been suggested as a
possible path to understanding the dark energy content of the Universe. We test
this hypothesis by comparing the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass density at
to the total mass accreted in AGN since , to constrain how much of
the SMBH mass density can arise from cosmologically-coupled growth, as opposed
to growth by accretion. Using an estimate of the local SMBH mass density of
MMpc, a radiative accretion
efficiency, : , and the observed AGN luminosity density at
, we constrain the value of the coupling constant between the scale
size of the Universe and the black hole mass, , to lie in the range
, below the value of needed for black holes to
be the source term for dark energy. Initial estimates of the gravitational wave
background using pulsar timing arrays, however, favor a higher SMBH mass
density at . We show that if we adopt such a mass density at of
MMpc, this makes viable
even for low radiative efficiencies, and may exclude non-zero cosmological
coupling. We conclude that, although current estimates of the SMBH mass density
based on the black hole mass -- bulge mass relation probably exclude , the
possibility remains open that, if the GWB is due to SMBH mergers, is
preferred.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures accepted by Ap
A qualitative study of community perception and acceptance of biological larviciding for malaria mosquito control in rural Burkina Faso
Background: Vector and malaria parasite’s rising resistance against pyrethroid-impregnated bed nets and antimalarial drugs highlight the need for additional control measures. Larviciding against malaria vectors is experiencing a renaissance with the availability of environmentally friendly and target species-specific larvicides. In this study,we analyse the perception and acceptability of spraying surface water collections with the biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis in a single health district in Burkina Faso.
Methods: A total of 12focus group discussions and 12key informant interviews were performed in 10 rural villages provided with coverage of various larvicide treatments (all breeding sites treated, the most productive breeding sites treated, and untreated control).
Results: Respondents’ knowledge about the major risk factors for malaria transmission was generally good. Most interviewees stated they performed personal protective measures against vector mosquitoes including the use of bed nets and sometimes mosquito coils and traditional repellents. The acceptance of larviciding in and around the villages was high and the majority of respondents reported a relief in mosquito nuisance and malarial episodes. There was high interest in the project and demand for future continuation.
Conclusion: This study showed that larviciding interventions received positive resonance from the population. People showed a willingness to be involved and financially support the program. The positive environment with high acceptance for larviciding programs would facilitate routine implementation. An essential factor for the future success of such programs would be inclusion in regional or national malaria control guidelines
The Student Services Program at La Salle University: Suggested Activities for Improvement
Various non-academic activities are designed to enrich the scholastic life of students. These activities are scaffold in the student services program. Thus, this study is undertaken with the aim of getting the zest of the important student services that touched and transform the college students' lives at La Salle University, Ozamiz City, Philippines. The descriptive - evaluative research was used to describe the student services program and suggested activities for improvement were proposed. The study found out that the university's best features in student services are in the areas of: admission policies, objectives of the guidance program and services, campus ministry services, research and evaluation, and co-curricular programs and activities. However, the university has to pay closer attention to organization and administration of the student services program, information dissemination of the guidance program and services, and students' assistance programs. Further, the university has made efforts to provide students with functional student services program to develop their wholistic being
Highly Educated Mother’s Perception of Childhood Vaccination Hesitancy in Kazakhstan: A Thematic Analysis
Background: Vaccine hesitancy among parents directly affects the child’s vaccination status sincethey are the legal decision-makers regarding vaccinating their children. The study aimed to describethe perceptions of highly educated Kazakhstani mothers about childhood vaccination hesitancy. Methods: The study utilized a thematic analysis to explore the mothers’ perceptions. A sample of95 participants comprehensively answered the free-text questions in an online questionnaire fromJanuary to February 2023. The analysis of the free-text responses followed a semantic thematicanalysis approach. The data were coded manually. Results: From the in-depth analysis of the data, 285 initial codes were extracted. The combination ofsimilar meanings and concept codes led to 14 sub-themes and finally yielded four significant themes:misconceptions about childhood vaccination, fear of the effect of vaccine on children, distrust of thehealthcare system, and social learning factors. Conclusion: The perceptions of Kazakh mothers about childhood vaccination hesitancy may leadto behaviors of delaying and refusing some or all childhood vaccines. Therefore, motivational andeducational strategies can be used by healthcare providers to instill trust in parents about childhoodvaccines and their safety and effectiveness
