The Passions and Disinterest: From Kantian Free Play to Creative Determination by Power, via Schiller and Nietzsche
I argue that Nietzsche’s criticism of the Kantian theory of disinterested pleasure in beauty reflects his own commitment to claims that closely resemble certain Kantian aesthetic principles, specifically as reinterpreted by Schiller. I show that Schiller takes the experience of beauty to be disinterested both (1) insofar as it involves impassioned ‘play’ rather than desire-driven ‘work’, and (2) insofar as it involves rational-sensuous (‘aesthetic’) play rather than mere physical play. In figures like Nietzsche, Schiller’s generic notion of play—which is itself influenced by Kant’s claim that aesthetic pleasure is orthogonal to desire-satisfaction—becomes decoupled from his (further) Kantian view that aesthetic play essentially involves a harmony of sensuous receptivity and rational spontaneity. The result, I suggest, is a self-standing opposition between desires and passions. This motivates a recognizably Romantic vision of aesthetic disinterestedness, as freedom from desire realized in a state of creative determination by passion
Paradoxes of Subdiffusive Infiltration in Disordered Systems
Infiltration of diffusing particles from one material to another where the
diffusion mechanism is either normal or anomalous is a widely observed
phenomena. When the diffusion is anomalous we find interesting behaviors:
diffusion may lead to an averaged net drift from one material to another
even if all particles eventually flow in the opposite direction, or may lead to
a flow without drift. Starting with an underlying continuous time random walk
model we solve diffusion equations describing this problem. Similar drift
against flow is found in the quenched trap model. We argue that such a behavior
is a general feature of diffusion in disordered systems.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Stability of an Ultra-Relativistic Blast Wave in an External Medium with a Steep Power-Law Density Profile
We examine the stability of self-similar solutions for an accelerating
relativistic blast wave which is generated by a point explosion in an external
medium with a steep radial density profile of a power-law index > 4.134. These
accelerating solutions apply, for example, to the breakout of a gamma-ray burst
outflow from the boundary of a massive star, as assumed in the popular
collapsar model. We show that short wavelength perturbations may grow but only

Salah satu program pemerintah dalam tumbuh kembang anak berhubungan dengan pendidikan dan pengembangan anak usia dini. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendeteksi nilai-nilai, keterampilan hidup,dan karakter yang lahir pada awal kehidupan anak melalui proses menyusui. Metode penelitian adalah metode kualitatif, yang dilakukan melalui wawancara semi terstruktur terhadap sepuluh ibu menyusui. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya lima nilai-nilai (budi baik, dekat, bersama, stimulasi, dan respek), empat keterampilan hidup (mandiri, adaptasi, komunikasi, dan efikasi-diri), dan enam karakter (bijaksana, berani, kasih sayang, percaya diri, syukur, dan gembira) yang lahir melalui proses tersebut. Hasil ini dapat digunakan pada program-program Promosi Kesehatan dan Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini dalam USAha membentuk anak bangsa yang sehat dan berkarakter kuat sejak awal kehidupan
Polarization of interacting bosons with spin
We demonstrate rigorously that in the absence of explicit spin-dependent
forces one of the ground states of interacting bosons with spin is always fully
polarized -- however complicated the many-body interaction potential might be.
Depending on the particle spin, the polarized ground state will generally be
degenerate with other states, but one can specify the exact degeneracy. For T>0
the magnetization and susceptibility necessarily exceed that of a pure
paramagnet. These results are relevant to recent experiments exploring the
relation between triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism, and the
Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms with spin. They eliminate the possibility,
raised in some theoretical speculations, that the ground state or positive
temperature state might be antiferromagnetic.Comment: v4: as published in PR
From non-Brownian Functionals to a Fractional Schr\"odinger Equation
We derive backward and forward fractional Schr\"odinger type of equations for
the distribution of functionals of the path of a particle undergoing anomalous
diffusion. Fractional substantial derivatives introduced by Friedrich and
co-workers [PRL {\bf 96}, 230601 (2006)] provide the correct fractional
framework for the problem at hand. In the limit of normal diffusion we recover
the Feynman-Kac treatment of Brownian functionals. For applications, we
calculate the distribution of occupation times in half space and show how
statistics of anomalous functionals is related to weak ergodicity breaking.Comment: 5 page
The mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchanger upregulates glucose dependent Ca2+ signalling linked to insulin secretion.
Mitochondria mediate dual metabolic and Ca(2+) shuttling activities. While the former is required for Ca(2+) signalling linked to insulin secretion, the role of the latter in β cell function has not been well understood, primarily because the molecular identity of the mitochondrial Ca(2+) transporters were elusive and the selectivity of their inhibitors was questionable. This study focuses on NCLX, the recently discovered mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger that is linked to Ca(2+) signalling in MIN6 and primary β cells. Suppression either of NCLX expression, using a siRNA construct (siNCLX) or of its activity, by a dominant negative construct (dnNCLX), enhanced mitochondrial Ca(2+) influx and blocked efflux induced by glucose or by cell depolarization. In addition, NCLX regulated basal, but not glucose-dependent changes, in metabolic rate, mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial resting Ca(2+). Importantly, NCLX controlled the rate and amplitude of cytosolic Ca(2+) changes induced by depolarization or high glucose, indicating that NCLX is a critical and rate limiting component in the cross talk between mitochondrial and plasma membrane Ca(2+) signalling. Finally, knockdown of NCLX expression was followed by a delay in glucose-dependent insulin secretion. These findings suggest that the mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger, NCLX, shapes glucose-dependent mitochondrial and cytosolic Ca(2+) signals thereby regulating the temporal pattern of insulin secretion in β cells
Super and Sub-Poissonian photon statistics for single molecule spectroscopy
We investigate the distribution of the number of photons emitted by a single
molecule undergoing a spectral diffusion process and interacting with a
continuous wave laser field. The spectral diffusion is modeled based on a
stochastic approach, in the spirit of the Anderson-Kubo line shape theory.
Using a generating function formalism we solve the generalized optical Bloch
equations, and obtain an exact analytical formula for the line shape and
Mandel's Q parameter. The line shape exhibits well known behaviors, including
motional narrowing when the stochastic modulation is fast, and power
broadening. The Mandel parameter, describing the line shape fluctuations,
exhibits a transition from a Quantum sub-Poissonian behavior in the fast
modulation limit, to a classical super-Poissonian behavior found in the slow
modulation limit. Our result is applicable for weak and strong laser field,
namely for arbitrary Rabi frequency. We show how to choose the Rabi frequency
in such a way that the Quantum sub-Poissonian nature of the emission process
becomes strongest. A lower bound on is found, and simple limiting behaviors
are investigated. A non-trivial behavior is obtained in the intermediate
modulation limit, when the time scales for spectral diffusion and the life time
of the excited state, become similar. A comparison is made between our results,
and previous ones derived based on the semi-classical generalized
