Short cuts to safety: Risk and 'rules of thumb' in accounts of food choice

    No full text
A number of 'food scares' over the past decade in Europe have generated considerable debate about public understandings of food risk, and the extent to which such understandings impact on decision making. This paper reports on a focus group study of how UK consumers discuss choosing safe food. Strategies for making food choices were, in general, characterised by confidence rather than anxiety. Although concerned in an abstract way with the safety of food and how it was monitored, 'risk' and 'safety' were rarely the primary discursive framework used for justifying food choices. Other discourses, such as health, naturalness, economy and convenience, competed with, overlapped with or were legitimated by that of 'risk'. However, everyday decision making was presented as a routine endeavour, aided by a number of 'short cuts' or rules of thumb for establishing food choices as routine and unremarkable. These short cuts divided safe from risky categories of food, but also divided preferred from despised foodstuffs in relation to other food discourses. Rules of thumb provided useful rhetorical devices for routinising accounts of food choice. In practice, however, rules of thumb are reported as being utilised in complex and contingent ways. They thus provide a sophisticated bulwark against the uncertainties of food risks when events (such as the media concern over BSE) threaten everyday trust in routine decisions

'A beginning and not the end’: Work after a diagnosis of dementia

YesWhile there is a growing literature on the experiences of disabled workers, this article presents an account of a work experience not frequently documented: being employed while living with dementia. It does this through the account of Elizabeth Draper, an NHS Hospital Trust manager, who received a diagnosis of dementia while employed. The article offers new ways of conceptualizing the struggles of disabled workers to continue with their project of self-becoming through work. It shows how work practices can enact violence through ‘non-recognition’ and how workers can subvert this violence to create opportunities for future development

Hospice Preceptor Training Program Elizabeth Draper, BSN, RN, CHPN May 5, 2025 Abstract A large hospice organization in the Midwest is experiencing a hospice nurse shortage that is negatively impacting patient care, operations, and financial stability. The hospice organization has lost nurses due to retirement, burnout, and heavy workloads. New hospice nurses are hired, but many are leaving the organization before their one-year anniversary. The hospice admission department has the highest new hire turnover rate in the organization. This is a problem because the admissions nurse is the first hospice team member the patient and family meet. The admissions nurse explains hospice philosophy and services, assesses the patient for hospice eligibility, and initiates the plan of care. If the admissions process does not go smoothly, it can negatively impact the patient experience. Preceptor training is a strategy that has been proven to decrease new hire turnover. The Hospice Preceptor Training Program is an educational offering that was designed with the goal of reducing turnover among new hires in the hospice admissions department, using evidence-based strategies. The program will include an initial interactive in-person class, online resources, and quarterly follow-up meetings. The expected result is that the new hire turnover rate will decrease, which will have a positive impact on staffing in the hospice admission department. Improved staffing with better prepared nurses will improve team member job satisfaction, patient care outcomes, and the financial stability of the organization. Keywords: hospice, preceptor, preceptor training, new hire turnover rate, nurse shortag

The Implications Of Milieu Upon Educational Administration

The Problem. It was the purpose of this study to answer the following questions: (1) What are the implications of changing milieu upon administrative leadership? (2) Ancillary to the above, does the literature suggest a separate type of administrative leadership for bureaucratic organizations?;Method. The research method utilized throughout the study was the content analysis technique of the historian whereby the conceptual literature over a period of time was critically examined. Data along the lines of the two sub-questions of the study were collected, collated, and interpreted in an attempt to discover new knowledge; Results. During the Classical period, it became evident that the administrative philosophies and theoretical veins were originally very regimented. Organizations operating during the 1920\u27s were considered static structures, guided by prescriptive theories. Here, the only road to efficiency and productivity was to surrender man\u27s needs to the service of the cold, insensitive machine. A leader in the classical period was considered competent if he demonstrated authoritarian behavior and implicitly adopted the objectives set forth by his superiors; During the Neo-classical period, theorists felt that a good leader was one who demonstrated the democratic rather than authoritarian behaviors. The new era also recognized that formal organizations had informal structures that could not be ignored. The highlight of this era was the realization that there were other motivations in force besides money and that these motivations were often more important. It was also discovered that individual workers reacted to an organization\u27s hierarchy, rules, and rewards not as individuals but as members of a group; The period of Modern theory added even more emphasis to the interactive process that occurred within an organization\u27s structure. These theorists assumed that an event was caused by numerous interrelated and interdependent factors. The felt that the choice of objectives and methods for achieving them were to be left to the individual leader. In short, the modern era integrated the classical and the neo-classical periods with contemporary concepts; In considering the questions of whether or not a bureaucracy required a separate type of leadership, it was found that bureaucracies were increasing in both formalization and centralization because our society was becoming more and more complex. Research also indicated that bureaucratic leaders must behave differently than those in charge of other bureaucracies. If our bureaucracies, as currently structured, needed to be altered to better suit today\u27s needs, our concepts of leadership would also need to undergo alteration. It was found that the preferred leader will adapt his behavior to meet the demands of his environment; A major outcome of the study was the realization that educators must continue to look at changing situations and the suggested ideal for administrative leadership as they occur and draw conclusions about what type of leaders are needed in order to cope with our complex society. Just as society has changed and become increasingly complex, it will continue to change and increase in complexity. As a result, the concept of leadership is worthy of constant study

    The world economy [February 1986]

The present recovery in the world economy has now proceeded for almost twice as long as the typical cyclical phase of expansion during the past four decades. Growth in 1985 and prospective growth for 1986 is, however, modest in comparison to both the rates achieved in earlier upswings and that of 1983-4 when world expansion was driven by the strong growth of the US economy. With the deceleration of the US economy from its phase of rapid expansion and the continuing policy caution in the countries of Western Europe and Japan, growth in the major industrialised economies is likely to be of the order of 2.5% in 1986

The rate of X-ray-induced DNA double-strand break repair in the embryonic mouse brain is unaff ected by exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fi elds

Following in utero exposure to low dose radiation (10 – 200 mGy), we recently observed a linear induction of DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) and activation of apoptosis in the embryonic neuronal stem/progenitor cell compartment. No signifi cant induction of DSB or apoptosis was observed following exposure to magnetic fi elds (MF). In the present study, we exploited this in vivo system to examine whether exposure to MF before and after exposure to 100 mGy X-rays impacts upon DSB repair rates. Materials and methods : 53BP1 foci were quantifi ed following combined exposure to radiation and MF in the embryonic neuronal stem/progenitor cell compartment. Embryos were exposed in utero to 50 Hz MF at 300 m T for 3 h before and up to 9 h after exposure to 100 mGy X-rays. Controls included embryos exposed to MF or X-rays alone plus sham exposures. Results : Exposure to MF before and after 100 mGy X-rays did not impact upon the rate of DSB repair in the embryonic neuronal stem cell compartment compared to repair rates following radiation exposure alone. Conclusions : We conclude that in this sensitive system MF do not exert any signifi cant level of DNA damage and do not impede the repair of X-ray induced damage

The recovery in the world economy which began in 1982 now appears to be moving out of its fastest growth phase. With the US economy growing more slowly in the first half of 1985 than in the corresponding period of 1984, the previous marked differences in growth rates between the US and the European economies are being eroded. Indeed, a number of European countries look set to achieve faster growth during 1984 than the US. Largely due to slower US growth, world trade is likely to expand this year by around 5J-6S as compared to 9% last year. The Bonn economic summit in May and subsequent policy statements provide no indications that the slackening momentum in the world economy is to be compensated for by reflation elsewhere
