Clinical and Radiological Parameters Predict Functional Improvement following Surgical Intervention

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), defined as "compression of the spinal cord in the cervical area of the spine", which ranges widely in severity and mechanism. The current research involving CSM involves studying surgical outcomes and determining the most reliable outcome measurements including radiological variables. The methods involved evaluating 50 patients on both clinical and radiologic variables operated on by the same surgeon from 2013-2018 retrospectively. A post operative ΔmJOA score was used to evaluate functional improvement. This study showed that the parameters of BMI, intermedullary lesion length (IML), and cervical kyphosis can be measured to assess improvement following surgical decompression. The predictive ability of these measures can be applied to better counsel patients and improve stratification in interventional studies. No embargoAcademic Major: Neuroscienc

Dadless: Dead Dads In Hamlet And The Effects On Their Children

    Get PDF
This research is a close look at the methods of grief as depicted by the children who lose their fathers in William Shakespeare’s classic, Hamlet. The goal is to track each child’s reaction to the sudden bereavement in a variety of physical and emotional manifestations. This has been done by first examining current literature on the text, followed by a review of historical context of the period in which the play was written, and finally analyzing each character’s behavior. In doing so, this research seeks to highlight the importance of the presence of fathers within Hamlet and provide insight as to how bereavement shapes the narrative of not only a series of characters, but also of hundreds of years’ worth of audiences

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph.A German doctor, Hans Asperger, first described Asperger\u27s syndrome in 1944. Asperger\u27s syndrome, AS, has been classified as a type of autism, which itself was first described in 1943. Although no two children that suffer from AS are alike, typically [they are] viewed as eccentric and peculiar by classmates ... [they] lack understanding of human relationships and the rules of social convention; they are naive and conspicuously lacking in common sense (Williams). However, children with AS are noted to be of average to above-average intelligence and are characterized to have rote memories of high capacity

The Potential of Positioning: Assessing New Directions for an Integrated, Feminist International Political Economy

    Get PDF
Feminist analyses of International Political Economy (IPE) currently face a significant epistemological challenge. By seeking to engage with mainstream political economists, feminist IPE scholars have narrowed the interdisciplinary approach that is common in most contemporary feminist scholarship to instead focus almost exclusively on the effects of neoliberal globalization. However, this focus has proved unsuccessful in garnering the interest of most mainstream international political economists and has isolated these scholars from feminist research in other disciplines. This paper argues that feminist IPE could gain significant leverage within its field by employing an interdisciplinary approach that links broader feminist issue such as violence against women to political economy. This is examined by reviewing some of the major feminist works in IPE and assessing their reception within the field of IPE. Next, the potential for broader feminist issues to garner mainstream attention in IPE is assessed by evaluating the economic implications of violence against women. In altering their epistemology to include a broader feminist analysis, feminist IPE scholars can effectively illustrate the need for feminist analysis in IPE while also wedding their research to the rich, interdisciplinary research of feminists in other fields

A Risk-Based Method For Estimating The Carbon Sequestration Budget For a Mixed Hardwood Forest

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere have risen from approximately 310 ppm in the 1950’s to over 400 ppm as of 2015. This rise in CO2 has likely resulted in the observed warming trend of the earth’s atmosphere in the same time frame, causing significant concern in the scientific community. Several mitigation strategies have arisen to combat the upward trend of CO2 emissions in recent decades, among them being carbon sequestration- the process of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and holding it for an extended period of time. This study used the U.S. Forest Service Tree Carbon Calculator (CTCC) to calculate the annual rate of CO2 sequestration, the total mass of CO2 stored, and the total above ground biomass of the SEFOR Land Holdings of the University of Arkansas. This unmanaged 243 hectare land area lies south of the University of Arkansas near the Ozark National Forest and consists mainly of hardwood tree species. The objectives of this exploration included gathering data on a representative sampling of the land holdings, characterizing the data into sub-groups, modeling sequestration rates using CTCC, and developing probability distributions of the sequestration and carbon storage potentials of the area. These results could then be used in land use valuation for the purposes of offsetting carbon emissions from a designated geography. This article details and develops a strategy for balancing the carbon budget of Northwest Arkansas. By using @Risk probability distribution software, it was determined that the SEFOR area sequesters, with 95% certainty, more than 10,087 metric tons of CO2 per year. In 2013, the University of Arkansas produced approximately 145,000 metric tons of CO2. Without forest management the SEFOR land holdings sequestered nearly 7% of the University’s carbon emissions, with proper forest management and larger land area, this could be improved to offset the University’s emissions. Proper forest management could have significant impacts on carbon offset in the future
