Phytoplankton Community and Algal Toxicity at a Recurring Bloom in Sullivan Bay, Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota, USA
Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA suffers from recurring late summer algal blooms that often contain toxin-producing cyanobacteria. Previous research identified the toxin microcystin in blooms, but we wanted to better understand how the algal and cyanobacterial community changed throughout an open water season and how changes in community structure were related to toxin production. Therefore, we sampled one recurring bloom location throughout the entire open water season. The uniqueness of this study is the absence of urban and agricultural nutrient sources, the remote location, and the collection of samples before any visible blooms were present. Through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), we discovered that toxin-forming cyanobacteria were present before visible blooms and toxins not previously detected in this region (anatoxin-a and saxitoxin) were present, indicating that sampling for additional toxins and sampling earlier in the season may be necessary to assess ecosystems and human health risk
Optimal Completion of Incomplete Gene Trees in Polynomial Time Using OCTAL
Here we introduce the Optimal Tree Completion Problem, a general optimization problem that involves completing an unrooted binary tree (i.e., adding missing leaves) so as to minimize its distance from a reference tree on a superset of the leaves. More formally, given a pair of unrooted binary trees (T,t) where T has leaf set S and t has leaf set R, a subset of S, we wish to add all the leaves from S R to t so as to produce a new tree t\u27 on leaf set S that has the minimum distance to T. We show that when the distance is defined by the Robinson-Foulds (RF) distance, an optimal solution can be found in polynomial time. We also present OCTAL, an algorithm that solves this RF Optimal Tree Completion Problem exactly in quadratic time. We report on a simulation study where we complete estimated gene trees using a reference tree that is based on a species tree estimated from a multi-locus dataset. OCTAL produces completed gene trees that are closer to the true gene trees than an existing heuristic approach, but the accuracy of the completed gene trees computed by OCTAL depends on how topologically similar the estimated species tree is to the true gene tree. Hence, under conditions with relatively low gene tree heterogeneity, OCTAL can be used to provide highly accurate completions of estimated gene trees. We close with a discussion of future research
No Time for Dead Time: Timing analysis of bright black hole binaries with NuSTAR
Timing of high-count rate sources with the NuSTAR Small Explorer Mission
requires specialized analysis techniques. NuSTAR was primarily designed for
spectroscopic observations of sources with relatively low count-rates rather
than for timing analysis of bright objects. The instrumental dead time per
event is relatively long (~2.5 msec), and varies by a few percent
event-to-event. The most obvious effect is a distortion of the white noise
level in the power density spectrum (PDS) that cannot be modeled easily with
the standard techniques due to the variable nature of the dead time. In this
paper, we show that it is possible to exploit the presence of two completely
independent focal planes and use the cross power density spectrum to obtain a
good proxy of the white noise-subtracted PDS. Thereafter, one can use a Monte
Carlo approach to estimate the remaining effects of dead time, namely a
frequency-dependent modulation of the variance and a frequency-independent drop
of the sensitivity to variability. In this way, most of the standard timing
analysis can be performed, albeit with a sacrifice in signal to noise relative
to what would be achieved using more standard techniques. We apply this

Rankism in Higher Education: A Critical Inquiry of Staff Experiences
Missing from the discussions of inequitable treatment of employees in higher education are the experiences of staff members. In work interactions, staff are frequently treated differently (often as inferiors), depending on their level of education and their role in the hierarchy on the non-academic side of an institution (Anonymous, 2006; Young, Anderson & Stewart, 2015). This difference in treatment has been termed, “rankism” in the broad sense or “hierarchical microaggressions” for smaller incidents and is especially troublesome as higher education is presumed to create upward mobility and lead towards a more equitable society (Young et al., 2015).
The research questions for this critical inquiry study were: “What structures of power surround and shape employees’ experiences with rankism and the meaning they make of those experiences? What narratives, both explicit and implicit, emerged about rankism? What changes can an institution make to create a climate of respecting all staff roles?” This research involved conducting semi-structured interviews of eighteen individuals who were currently working as staff members in higher education.
Key findings included themes of: staff’s role in the hierarchy; culture enacted from the top down; money equals worth; staff feeling undervalued; accepted divisions in higher education; self-questioning; staff roles being frequently misunderstood; and how people are treated matters. Suggestions include naming rankism, creating processes and training sessions by expanding Diversity Offices, and examining the role of leadership
Comparison of Body Composition Measurements using a New Caliper, Two Established Calipers, Hydrostatic Weighing, and BodPod
Purposes: (1) To compare the Lafayette Instruments (LI) skinfold caliper to the Lange (L) and Harpenden (H) calipers using a diverse subject population. (2) To determine the validity of the LI caliper in a subset of subjects by comparing body compositions from skinfold thicknesses to those measured by hydrostatic weighing (HW) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP). (3) To compare measurements obtained by experienced (EX) and inexperienced (IX) technicians using all three calipers. Methods: Skinfold measurements were performed by both EX and IX technicians using three different calipers on 21 younger (21.2 ± 1.5 yrs) and 20 older (59.2 ± 4 yrs) subjects. Body compositions were calculated using the Jackson-Pollock seven-site and three-site formulas. HW and ADP tests were performed on a subset of subjects (10 younger, 10 older). Results: No significant differences existed between LI and L or H when measurements were made by EX. Further, the LI-EX measurements were highly correlated to both H-EX and L-EX. No significant differences existed in the subgroup between LI-EX and HW or ADP. Skinfold determinations made by EX and IX were similar. Conclusions: Similar body compositions determined using LI, H, and L suggest that LI determines body composition as effectively as H and L. High correlations between the three calipers support this notion. Similar results between LI and HW/ADP subgroup suggest that the LI caliper may be a valid method of measuring body composition. Overall, performance by IX was similar to EX and suggests similar ease of use for all three calipers
Linguistic Features of Uzbek
This poster provides a preliminary description of the linguistic features of Uzbek, the official language of Uzbekistan. Uzbek is characterized as an Eastern Turkic language within the Altaic language family and, although it is spoken by over 18 million people around the world, it is highly under-documented in linguistic literature. Over the course of a semester, our group met with a native speaker of Uzbek to document the phonological, morphological, and syntactic features of the language. This analysis, along with recordings made by our group, serves the greater linguistic community by providing theoretical linguists with new language data to support their research
Local Food Prices And The Purchasing Power Of SNAP Benefits
While the nominal value of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits is fixed across states (except for Hawaii and Alaska), variation in food prices across the U.S. is dramatic. We provide new evidence describing geographic variation in the purchasing power of SNAP benefits, measured by the extent to which SNAP-recipient households are able to afford the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) food plan on which legislated SNAP benefit levels are based. For more than one-quarter of SNAP households, SNAP benefits are too low to cover the cost of the TFP at the primary stores where they report shopping. SNAP purchasing power increases somewhat as we assume households can travel farther to shop and increases much more with the assumed ability to identify and travel to the lowest-cost store in a given area. It is unlikely, however, that SNAP households are sufficiently informed and mobile to shop at the lowest-cost store in a large (e.g., 10 to 20-mile) geographic area. We demonstrate that aggregate dollar shortfalls for SNAP households who cannot afford the TFP could be completely eliminated by redistributing from households in low-cost areas to those in high-cost areas, e.g., by indexing SNAP benefits to local food prices
Associations between self-referral and health behavior responses to genetic risk information
Background: Studies examining whether genetic risk information about common, complex diseases can motivate individuals to improve health behaviors and advance planning have shown mixed results. Examining the influence of different study recruitment strategies may help reconcile inconsistencies. Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted on data from the REVEAL study, a series of randomized clinical trials examining the impact of genetic susceptibility testing for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We tested whether self-referred participants (SRPs) were more likely than actively recruited participants (ARPs) to report health behavior and advance planning changes after AD risk and APOE genotype disclosure. Results: Of 795 participants with known recruitment status, 546 (69%) were self-referred and 249 (31%) had been actively recruited. SRPs were younger, less likely to identify as African American, had higher household incomes, and were more attentive to AD than ARPs (all P < 0.01). They also dropped out of the study before genetic risk disclosure less frequently (26% versus 41%, P < 0.001). Cohorts did not differ in their likelihood of reporting a change to at least one health behavior 6 weeks and 12 months after genetic risk disclosure, nor in intentions to change at least one behavior in the future. However, interaction effects were observed where ε4-positive SRPs were more likely than ε4-negative SRPs to report changes specifically to mental activities (38% vs 19%, p < 0.001) and diets (21% vs 12%, p = 0.016) six weeks post-disclosure, whereas differences between ε4-positive and ε4-negative ARPs were not evident for mental activities (15% vs 21%, p = 0.413) or diets (8% versus 16%, P = 0.190). Similarly, ε4-positive participants were more likely than ε4-negative participants to report intentions to change long-term care insurance among SRPs (20% vs 5%, p < 0.001), but not ARPs (5% versus 9%, P = 0.365). Conclusions: Individuals who proactively seek AD genetic risk assessment are more likely to undergo testing and use results to inform behavior changes than those who respond to genetic testing offers. These results demonstrate how the behavioral impact of genetic risk information may vary according to the models by which services are provided, and suggest that how participants are recruited into translational genomics research can influence findings. Variation in Food Prices and SNAP Adequacy for Purchasing the Thrifty Food Plan
Whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are adequate to provide food security for eligible households is an important and timely policy question. While the nominal value of SNAP benefits is fixed across states (except for Hawaii and Alaska), variation in food prices across geographic areas is dramatic, and the real value of SNAP benefits varies widely across the U.S. Our research provides new evidence on geographic variation in the adequacy of SNAP benefits to purchase the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP).
Using multiple methods to estimate the cost of the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) faced by households across the nation, and several measures of the SNAP benefits available to them, we consistently find that a substantial fraction of SNAP-recipient households receive benefits that are insufficient to purchase the TFP. Our primary estimates indicate that SNAP benefits (plus 30 percent of income) are insufficient for approximately 20-30 percent of households to purchase the TFP. Sufficiency rates increase monotonically as we expand the distance within which the household is assumed to be able to shop. For households who are unable to afford the TFP, average dollar shortfalls between the cost of the TFP and SNAP benefits (plus 30 percent of income) are often as large as $150 per month. When shoppers are assumed to be able to purchase the TFP at the minimum-cost store in the area, SNAP benefits are sufficient for over 90 percent of households. However, this assumption seems unlikely to hold for many SNAP households
