This personal essay tackles the life of a transgender woman, the secret that was shared with her by her mami-mamihan, and the freedom that was brought by that secret. The narrative also highlights the complex yet indispensable and vibrant life of pageanteras behind the limelight—in every corner of a special place called backstage. It aims to emphasize that ramping up on stage to radiate happiness goes way beyond beauty and sparkle. Keywords Above all, I dedicate this essay to everyone who was crowned and will be crowned as Miss Packaging Tape. This is a celebration, a salute, and an act of dignifying the pedestal that has long been a witness to thousands of hidden and secluded narratives. Welcome to the world of Ladies and Gentlemen

Carriage of an ACME II variant may have contributed to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus sequence type 239-like strain replacement in Liverpool hospital, Sydney, Australia

Approximately 39% of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type 239 (ST239)-like bloodstream isolates from Liverpool Hospital (obtained between 1997 and 2008) carry an arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME). Whole-genome sequencing revealed that an ACME II variant is located between orfX and SCCmec III, and based on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and temporal relationships of all ST239-like isolates (n = 360), ACME carriage may have contributed to subpulsotype strain replacement

Abstract Background: Oral mucositis is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Stomatitis manifests as multiple lesions in the oral region. This can cause severe pain in the oral cavity and impede food intake, leading to a deterioration of the quality of life. Objective: The aim of this bachelor thesis was to find out, based on scientific literature, which nursing interventions can be applied to prevent chemo- and radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients under ongoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Methodology: The literature search was conducted according to Mayer (2019) from October 2022 to May 2023 in the scientific databases MEDLINE® via PubMed and CINAHL® via Ebsco host. Twelve quantitative studies were identified to answer the research question and critically appraised and evaluated using checklists. Results: Three syntheses were formed to answer the research question. The application of honey in mouthwash from the synthesis "alternative mouthwashes" showed significant preventive effect against oral mucositis. The studies using "oral cryotherapy" for prevention showed statistically significant and non-statistically significant results regarding the reduction of the frequency and intensity of oral mucositis. The sodium carbonate, zinc chloride mouthwashes "mouthwashes containing active ingredients", reduced the incidence, intensity and symptoms of oral mucositis. Conclusion: Alternative mouth rinses and oral cryotherapy are recommended for practice in the prevention of oral mucositis. Evidence-based guidelines can be developed using these interventions. Further research with larger samples to better evaluate efficacy would be recommended

The Use of Virtual Reality as a Nursing Intervention for Anxiety in Patients with Cancer

    No full text
Distractions help to decrease anxiety, and virtual reality is a new form of distraction with the potential to relieve anxiety (Glennon et al., 2018). The use of virtual reality as a nursing intervention is a potentially effective way of decreasing anxiety in patients with cancer. However, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence regarding whether this nursing intervention is correlated with decreased anxiety in patients, which constitutes a gap in the current knowledge. This thesis aims to answer what factors need to be evaluated in order to fill the knowledge gap and determine if a correlation exists between the use of virtual reality as a nursing intervention and decreased anxiety in cancer patients. Nursing articles about the intervention of virtual reality for anxiety relief were found through the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) along with set search terms and filters for relevancy

Biological Weathering Processes on Natural and Artificial Stone with a Special Request to Microbial Activity

    No full text
Biological weathering has the ability to modify the composition of rocks, changing their properties and the way the landscape looks. This paper delves into the distinct causes of biological weathering of rocks; namely the effects of microbial, plant, animal, and human activity. In terms of microbial activity, the paper mentions the specific effects microbes and their processes that are required for them to weather rocks. The 'Healing of Weathering' is the penultimate topic that is covered. The topic discusses how bacteria and specific self-healing agents are able to mend/heal rockss.BiologyBSc/B

The role of stress appraisal for proactivity and problem-solving: a multi-level approach

Problem-solving demands can have both positive and negative implications for proactive behaviour. I examined whether these inconsistent effects were explained by the way in which people appraised (interpreted) their problem-solving demands. Drawing upon transactional theory, it was hypothesised that the effects of problem-solving demands on a range of proactive behaviours would be mediated by stress appraisal (i.e., challenge, threat, hindrance appraisal) and moderated by factors relevant to problem-solving at the person and team levels. This is a thesis by publication, comprised of four empirical studies. Study 1 used diary study methodology to test relationships at the person and day levels, affirming that stress appraisal mediates the effects of problem-solving demands on a range of proactive behaviours. In light of the recognised role of teams for problem-solving, Studies 2 and 3 explored the impact of team characteristics on the stress appraisal process at the between-person level of analysis. Study 2 focused on the relationship between problem-solving demands and stress appraisal, demonstrating that team problem prevention amplifies the beneficial effects of problem-solving demands on positive (challenge) appraisal. Study 3 instead focused on the relationship between stress appraisal and proactive innovation, demonstrating that the relationship depends on both team problem prevention and leader threat appraisal. Whereas previous research, and Studies 1 and 3, explored stress appraisal as an antecedent of proactivity, Study 4 positions proactivity as an antecedent to stress appraisal, drawing on reinforcement sensitivity to identify moderators of this relationship. Results showed that daily proactive problem prevention behaviours interacted with personality (i.e., behavioural activation) to influence next-day stress appraisal. Collectively, this body of work demonstrates the critical role of stress appraisal at multiple levels of the organisation -- abstract
