    Inflation, slack, and Fed credibility

    It is generally agreed that slack has some impact on inflation. There is much less agreement on what form the relationship takes and whether it is stable enough to reliably help predict inflation. This analysis focuses on the Great Moderation period. We find that slack (as measured by the unemployment rate) and changes in slack are negatively correlated with changes in inflation and also deviations of inflation from long-forward inflation expectations.> ; These relationships could have been exploited to produce forecasts of trimmed mean PCE inflation more accurate than rule-of-thumb forecasts. Forecasts of trimmed mean PCE inflation also serve well as predictions of GDP inflation and headline PCE inflation.     On the precision of chiral-dispersive calculations of ππ\pi\pi scattering

    We calculate the combination 2a0(0)5a0(2)2a_0^{(0)}-5a_0^{(2)} (the Olsson sum rule) and the scattering lengths and effective ranges a1a_1, a2(I)a_2^{(I)} and b1b_1, b2(I)b_2^{(I)} dispersively (with the Froissart--Gribov representation) using, at low energy, the phase shifts for ππ\pi\pi scattering obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL) from the Roy equations and chiral perturbation theory, plus experiment and Regge behaviour at high energy, or directly, using the CGL parameters for aas and bbs. We find mismatch, both among the CGL phases themselves and with the results obtained from the pion form factor. This reaches the level of several (2 to 5) standard deviations, and is essentially independent of the details of the intermediate energy region (0.82E1.420.82\leq E\leq 1.42 GeV) and, in some cases, of the high energy behaviour assumed.     An integrable multicomponent quad equation and its Lagrangian formulation

    We present a hierarchy of discrete systems whose first members are the lattice modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the lattice modified Boussinesq equation. The N-th member in the hierarchy is an N-component system defined on an elementary plaquette in the 2-dimensional lattice. The system is multidimensionally consistent and a Lagrangian which respects this feature, i.e., which has the desirable closure property, is obtained.Comment: 10 page

    Production of orbitally excited vector mesons in diffractive DIS

    Within the k_t-factorization framework, we study diffractive production of orbitally excited vector mesons and compare it with the production of radial excitations, focusing on the rho(1450)/rho(1700) case. At small Q^2, orbital excitation of light quarkonia is found to dominate over radial excitations in diffractive production. We predict strong suppression of the production of orbital excitations by longitudinal photons, which leads to very small sigma_L/sigma_T ratio. At small Q^2, the s-channel helicity violating transitions contribute \sim 10-15% of the transverse cross section and \sim 50% of the longitudinal cross section. We also study mixing between radial and orbital excitations and determine strategies towards clarification of S-wave/D-wave assignment to rho(1450) and rho(1700) mesons. The results are compared with the experimental data available, and predictions for future experiments are given.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
