The 2009 multiwavelength campaign on Mrk 421: Variability and correlation studies
We performed a 4.5-month multi-instrument campaign (from radio to VHE gamma
rays) on Mrk421 between January 2009 and June 2009, which included VLBA,
F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, Swift, RXTE, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, and Whipple, among other
instruments and collaborations. Mrk421 was found in its typical (non-flaring)
activity state, with a VHE flux of about half that of the Crab Nebula, yet the
light curves show significant variability at all wavelengths, the highest
variability being in the X-rays. We determined the power spectral densities
(PSD) at most wavelengths and found that all PSDs can be described by
power-laws without a break, and with indices consistent with pink/red-noise
behavior. We observed a harder-when-brighter behavior in the X-ray spectra and
measured a positive correlation between VHE and X-ray fluxes with zero time
lag. Such characteristics have been reported many times during flaring
activity, but here they are reported for the first time in the non-flaring
state. We also observed an overall anti-correlation between optical/UV and
X-rays extending over the duration of the campaign.
The harder-when-brighter behavior in the X-ray spectra and the measured
positive X-ray/VHE correlation during the 2009 multi-wavelength campaign
suggests that the physical processes dominating the emission during non-flaring
states have similarities with those occurring during flaring activity. In
particular, this observation supports leptonic scenarios as being responsible
for the emission of Mrk421 during non-flaring activity. Such a temporally
extended X-ray/VHE correlation is not driven by any single flaring event, and
hence is difficult to explain within the standard hadronic scenarios. The
highest variability is observed in the X-ray band, which, within the one-zone
synchrotron self-Compton scenario, indicates that the electron energy

A preliminary survey of the cellular responses of the black fungus Cryomyces antarcticus to long and short-term dehydration
The McMurdo Dry Valleys in Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, are known for their extreme aridity, cold, and nutrient-poor conditions. These valleys provide a valuable comparison to environments on Mars. The survival of microorganisms in these areas hinges on their ability to withstand dehydra-tion due to the limited availability of liquid water. Some microorganisms have adapted to survive extended periods of metabolic inactivity and dehydration, a physiological response to the harsh conditions in which they exist.
This adaptation is significant for astrobiology studies as it allows for testing the resilience of microorganisms under extraterrestrial conditions, exploring the boundaries and potential for life beyond Earth. In this study, we examined the survivability, metabolic activity, cellular membrane integrity, and ultrastructural damage of Cryomyces antarcticus, a eukaryotic organism used for astrobiological studies, following two dehydration processes. We conducted a fast dehydration process, simulating what happens on the sur-
face of Antarctic rocks under typical environmental conditions, and a slow dehydration process, which is commonly used in astrobiological experiments. Our findings revealed a higher percentage of damaged cells following slow dehydration treatments, confirming that rapid dehydration reflects the adaptability of microorganisms to respond to sudden and drastic changes in the Antarctic environment
Heparan sulfate proteoglycans: structure, protein interactions and cell signaling
Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are ubiquitously found at the cell surface and extracellular matrix in all the animal species. This review will focus on the structural characteristics of the heparan sulfate proteoglycans related to protein interactions leading to cell signaling. The heparan sulfate chains due to their vast structural diversity are able to bind and interact with a wide variety of proteins, such as growth factors, chemokines, morphogens, extracellular matrix components, enzymes, among others. There is a specificity directing the interactions of heparan sulfates and target proteins, regarding both the fine structure of the polysaccharide chain as well precise protein motifs. Heparan sulfates play a role in cellular signaling either as receptor or co-receptor for different ligands, and the activation of downstream pathways is related to phosphorylation of different cytosolic proteins either directly or involving cytoskeleton interactions leading to gene regulation. The role of the heparan sulfate proteoglycans in cellular signaling and endocytic uptake pathways is also discussed.Proteoglicanos de heparam sulfato são encontrados tanto superfície celular quanto na matriz extracelular em todas as espécies animais. Esta revisão tem enfoque nas características estruturais dos proteoglicanos de heparam sulfato e nas interações destes proteoglicanos com proteínas que levam à sinalização celular. As cadeias de heparam sulfato, devido a sua variedade estrutural, são capazes de se ligar e interagir com ampla gama de proteínas, como fatores de crescimento, quimiocinas, morfógenos, componentes da matriz extracelular, enzimas, entreoutros. Existe uma especificidade estrutural que direciona as interações dos heparam sulfatos e proteínas alvo. Esta especificidade está relacionada com a estrutura da cadeia do polissacarídeo e os motivos conservados da cadeia polipeptídica das proteínas envolvidas nesta interação. Os heparam sulfatos possuem papel na sinalização celular como receptores ou coreceptores para diferentes ligantes. Esta ligação dispara vias de sinalização celular levam à fosforilação de diversas proteínas citosólicas ou com ou sem interações diretas com o citoesqueleto, culminando na regulação gênica. Prediction of genetic gains by selection indices using mixed models in elephant grass for energy purposes.
Genetically improved cultivars of elephant grass need to be adapted to different ecosystems with a faster growth speed and lower seasonality of biomass production over the year. This study aimed to use selection indices using mixed models (REML/BLUP) for selecting families and progenies within full-sib families of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) for biomass production. One hundred and twenty full-sib progenies were assessed from 2014 to 2015 in a randomized block design with three replications. During this period, the traits dry matter production, the number of tillers, plant height, stem diameter, and neutral detergent fiber were assessed. Families 3 and 1were the best classified, being the most indicated for selection effect. Progenies 40, 45, 46, and 49 got the first positions in the three indices assessed in the first cut. The gain for individual 40 was 161.76% using Mulamba and Mock index. The use of selection indices using mixed models is advantageous in elephant grass since they provide high gains with the selection, which are distributed among all the assessed traits in the most appropriate situation to breeding programs
