    Presence of Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. in Wild Small Mammals on Organic Farms

    The presence of Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. in rodents and insectivores (n 282) was investigated on organic farms. Infections were encountered in house mice (8 of 83 Campylobacter positive and 1 of 83 Salmonella sp. strain Livingstone positive) and brown rats (1 of 8 Campylobacter positive) but not in other species. No shared Campylobacter genotypes were found between rodent and pig manure isolates. Effective on-farm rodent management is recommended

    Rapid purification of quantum systems by measuring in a feedback-controlled unbiased basis

    Rapid-purification by feedback --- specifically, reducing the mean impurity faster than by measurement alone --- can be achieved by making the eigenbasis of the density matrix to be unbiased relative to the measurement basis. Here we further examine the protocol introduced by Combes and Jacobs [Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 96}, 010504 (2006)] involving continuous measurement of the observable JzJ_z for a DD-dimensional system. We rigorously re-derive the lower bound (2/3)(D+1)(2/3)(D+1) on the achievable speed-up factor, and also an upper bound, namely D2/2D^2/2, for all feedback protocols that use measurements in unbiased bases. Finally we extend our results to nn independent measurements on a register of nn qubits, and derive an upper bound on the achievable speed-up factor that scales linearly with nn.Comment: v2: published versio

    The EET Horizontal Tails Investigation and the EET Lateral Controls Investigation

    In the energy efficient transport (EET) Horizontal Tails Investigation, aerodynamic data were measured for five different horizontal tails on a full span model with a wide body fuselage. Three of the horizontal tails were low tail configurations and two were T tail configurations. All tails were tested in conjunction with two wings, a current wide body wing and a high aspect ratio supercritical wing. Local downwash angles and dynamic pressures in the vicinity of the tails were measured using a yaw head rake. The results provide a comparison of the aerodynamic characteristics of the two wing configurations at trimmed conditions for Mach numbers between 0.60 and 0.90. In the EET Lateral Controls Investigation, the control effectiveness of a conventional set of lateral controls was measured over a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.90 on a high aspect ratio supercritical wing semispan model. The conventional controls included a high speed aileron, a low speed aileron, and six spoiler segments. The wing was designed so that the last 25% of the chord is removable to facilitate testing of various control systems.     Ensuring the compatibility of the space shuttle system with payloads and payload measurements is discussed. An extensive set of quantitative requirements and goals was developed and implemented by the space shuttle program management. The performance of the Shuttle system as measured by these requirements and goals was assessed partly through the use of the induced environment contamination monitor on Shuttle flights 2, 3, and 4. Contamination levels are low and generally within the requirements and goals established. Additional data from near-term payloads and already planned contamination measurements will complete the environment definition and allow for the development of contamination avoidance procedures as necessary for any payload

    Pressure and spanwise load distributions on a first-generation jet transport semispan model at subsonic speeds are presented. The wind tunnel data were measured for the wing with and without an alternate winglet. The results show that the winglet affected outboard wing pressure distributions and increased the spanwise loads near the tip

    Approximate theoretical performance evaluation for a diverging rocket

    A simplified combustion model, which is motivated by available performance studies on the diverging rocket reactor, has been used as basis for an engine performance evaluation. Comparison with conventional rocket configurations shows that an upper performance limit for the diverging reactor is comparable with performance estimates for engines using an adiabatic work cycle. Development of the diverging reactor for engine applications may, however, offer some advantages for very hot, high-energy, propellant systems

    To map out area effects on health research, this study had the following aims: (1) to inventory multilevel investigations of area effects on self rated health, cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, and mortality among adults; (2) to describe and critically discuss methodological approaches employed and results observed; and (3) to formulate selected recommendations for advancing the study of area effects on health. Overall, 86 studies were inventoried. Although several innovative methodological approaches and analytical designs were found, small areas are most often operationalised using administrative and statistical spatial units. Most studies used indicators of area socioeconomic status derived from censuses, and few provided information on the validity and reliability of measures of exposures. A consistent finding was that a significant portion of the variation in health is associated with area context independently of individual characteristics. Area effects on health, although significant in most studies, often depend on the health outcome studied, the measure of area exposure used, and the spatial scale at which associations are examined
