Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry - Application in the clinical laboratory
This review provides a concise survey of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LCTMS) as an emerging technology in clinical chemistry. The combination of two mass spectrometers with an interposed collision cell characterizes LCTMS as an analytical technology on its own and not just as a more specific detector for HPLC compared with conventional techniques. In LCTMS, liquid chromatography is rather used for sample preparation but not for complete resolution of compounds of interest. The instrument technology of LCTMS is complex and comparatively expensive; however, in routine use, methods are far more rugged compared to conventional chromatographic techniques and enable highthroughput analyses with very limited manual handling steps. Moreover, compared to both gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GCMS) and conventional HPLC techniques, LCTMS is substantially more versatile with respect to the spectrum of analyzable compounds. For these reasons it is likely that LCTMS will gain far more widespread use in the clinical laboratory than HPLC and GCMS ever did. Experimental Indicators of Accretion Processes in Active Galactic Nuclei
Bright Active Galactic Nuclei are powered by accretion of mass onto the super
massive black holes at the centers of the host galaxies. For fainter objects
star formation may significantly contribute to the luminosity. We summarize
experimental indicators of the accretion processes in Active Galactic Nuclei
(AGN), i.e., observable activity indicators that allow us to conclude on the
nature of accretion. The Galactic Center is the closest galactic nucleus that
can be studied with unprecedented angular resolution and sensitivity.
Therefore, here we also include the presentation of recent observational
results on Sagittarius A* and the conditions for star formation in the central
stellar cluster. We cover results across the electromagnetic spectrum and find
that the Sagittarius A* (SgrA*) system is well ordered with respect to its
geometrical orientation and its emission processes of which we assume to

Green's First Identity Method for Boundary-Only Solution of Self-Weight in BEM Formulation for Thick Slabs
The present paper develops a new technique for treatment of self-weight for building slabs in the boundary element method (BEM). Due to the use of BEM in the analysis, all defined variables are presented on the slab boundary (mesh is defined only along the slab boundary). Self-weight, however, is usually defined over slab domain, hence domain discretisation is required, which spoils the main advantage of the BEM. In this paper a new method is presented to transform self-weight domain integrals to the boundary for such slabs. The proposed method is based on using the so-called Green's first identity. All new kernels for generalized displacements, stress-resultants, and tractions are derived and listed explicitly. The present formulation is implemented into computer code and several examples are tested. Results are compared against results obtained from other numerical method to prove the accuracy and validity of the present formulation
Competing biosecurity and risk rationalities in the Chittagong poultry commodity chain, Bangladesh
This paper anthropologically explores how key actors in the Chittagong live bird trading network perceive biosecurity and risk in relation to avian influenza between production sites, market maker scenes and outlets. They pay attention to the past and the present, rather than the future, downplaying the need for strict risk management, as outbreaks have not been reported frequently for a number of years. This is analysed as ‘temporalities of risk perception regarding biosecurity’, through Black Swan theory, the idea that unexpected events with major effects are often inappropriately rationalized (Taleb in The Black Swan. The impact of the highly improbable, Random House, New York, 2007). This incorporates a sociocultural perspective on risk, emphasizing the contexts in which risk is understood, lived, embodied and experienced. Their risk calculation is explained in terms of social consent, practical intelligibility and convergence of constraints and motivation. The pragmatic and practical orientation towards risk stands in contrast to how risk is calculated in the avian influenza preparedness paradigm. It is argued that disease risk on the ground has become a normalized part of everyday business, as implied in Black Swan theory. Risk which is calculated retrospectively is unlikely to encourage investment in biosecurity and, thereby, points to the danger of unpredictable outlier events

The method of external source collocation is used to solve a discretised boundary value problem, ∇2U = 0, where U is the potential in a two-dimensional simply-connected region D, subject to a mixture of Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Numerical analysis has, to date, been hindered by an accumulation of round-off error, which has made it impossible to investigate accuracy of the Meshless Fundamental Solutions method unless sources are near the boundary. Symbolic analysis allows a full investigation of ill-conditioned systems in which sources can be placed "at infinity". This analysis provides an indication of how many sources must be used and where they should be placed

Power management and control strategies for off-grid hybrid power systems with renewable energies and storage

The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/s12667-017-0251-y.This paper presents a simulation study of standalone hybrid Distributed Generation Systems (DGS) with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The DGS consists of Photovoltaic (PV) panels as Renewable Power Source (RPS), a Diesel Generator (DG) for power buck-up and a BESS to accommodate the surplus of energy, which may be employed in times of poor PV generation. While off-grid DGS represent an efficient and cost-effective energy supply solution particularly to rural and remote areas, fluctuations in voltage and frequency due to load variations, weather conditions (temperature, irradiation) and transmission line short-circuits are major challenges. The paper suggests a hierarchical Power Management (PM) and controller structure to improve the reliability and efficiency of the hybrid DGS. The first layer of the overall control scheme includes a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to adjust the voltage and frequency at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) and a Clamping Bridge Circuit (CBC) which regulates the DC bus voltage. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller based on FLC is designed to extract the optimum power from the PV. The second control layer coordinates among PV, DG and BESS to ensure reliable and efficient power supply to the load. MATLAB Simulink is used to implement the overall model of the off-grid DGS and to test the performance of the proposed control scheme which is evaluated in a series of simulations scenarios. The results demonstrated the good performance of the proposed control scheme and effective coordination between the DGS for all the simulation scenarios considered.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
