    Fragile phase stability in (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-xPbTiO3 crystals: A comparisons of [001] and [110] field-cooled phase diagrams

    Phase diagrams of [001] and [110] field-cooled (FC) (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-xPbTiO3 or PMN-xPT crystals have been constructed, based on high-resolution x-ray diffraction data. Comparisons reveal several interesting findings. First, a region of abnormal thermal expansion above the dielectric maximum was found, whose stability range extended to higher temperatures by application of electric field (E). Second, the rhombohedral (R) phase of the ZFC state was replaced by a monoclinic MA in the [001] FC diagram, but with monoclinic MB in the [110] FC. Third, the monoclinic MC phase in ZFC and [001] FC diagram was replaced by an orthorhombic (O) phase in the [110] FC. Finally, in the [001] FC diagram, the phase boundary between tetragonal (T) and MA was extended to lower PT contents (x=0.25); whereas in the [110] FC diagram, this extended region was entirely replaced by the O phase. These results clearly demonstrate that the phase stability of PMN-xPT crystals is quite fragile, depending not only on modest changes in E, but also on the direction along which that E is applied.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    Is the present expansion of the universe really accelerating?

    The current observations are usually explained by an accelerating expansion of the present universe. However, with the present quality of the supernovae Ia data, the allowed parameter space is wide enough to accommodate the decelerating models as well. This is shown by considering a particular example of the dark energy equation-of-state wϕpϕ/ρϕ=1/3w_\phi\equiv p_\phi/\rho_\phi=-1/3, which is equivalent to modifying the \emph{geometrical curvature} index kk of the standard cosmology by shifting it to (kα)(k-\alpha) where α\alpha is a constant. The resulting decelerating model is consistent with the recent CMB observations made by WMAP, as well as, with the high redshift supernovae Ia data including SN 1997ff at z=1.755z= 1.755. It is also consistent with the newly discovered supernovae SN 2002dc at z=0.475z=0.475 and SN 2002dd at z=0.95z=0.95 which have a general tendency to improve the fit.Comment: Replaced with the accepted version to appear in MNRA

    Coexistence and competition of multiple charge-density-wave orders in rare-earth tri-telluride RTe3

    The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between different orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight.     Rotating Convection in an Anisotropic System

    We study the stability of patterns arising in rotating convection in weakly anisotropic systems using a modified Swift-Hohenberg equation. The anisotropy, either an endogenous characteristic of the system or induced by external forcing, can stabilize periodic rolls in the K\"uppers-Lortz chaotic regime. For the particular case of rotating convection with time-modulated rotation where recently, in experiment, chiral patterns have been observed in otherwise K\"uppers-Lortz-unstable regimes, we show how the underlying base-flow breaks the isotropy, thereby affecting the linear growth-rate of convection rolls in such a way as to stabilize spirals and targets. Throughout we compare analytical results to numerical simulations of the Swift-Hohenberg equation

    Wideband saturable absorption in few-layer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe₂) for Q-switching Yb-, Er- and Tm-doped fiber lasers.

    We fabricate a free-standing molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) saturable absorber by embedding liquid-phase exfoliated few-layer MoSe2 flakes into a polymer film. The MoSe2-polymer composite is used to Q-switch fiber lasers based on ytterbium (Yb), erbium (Er) and thulium (Tm) gain fiber, producing trains of microsecond-duration pulses with kilohertz repetition rates at 1060 nm, 1566 nm and 1924 nm, respectively. Such operating wavelengths correspond to sub-bandgap saturable absorption in MoSe2, which is explained in the context of edge-states, building upon studies of other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based saturable absorbers. Our work adds few-layer MoSe2 to the growing catalog of TMDs with remarkable optical properties, which offer new opportunities for photonic devices

    Lensing effect on the relative orientation between the Cosmic Microwave Background ellipticities and the distant galaxies

    The low redshift structures of the Universe act as lenses in a similar way on the Cosmic Microwave Background light and on the distant galaxies (say at redshift about unity). As a consequence, the CMB temperature distortions are expected to be statistically correlated with the galaxy shear, exhibiting a non-uniform distribution of the relative angle between the CMB and the galactic ellipticities. Investigating this effect we find that its amplitude is as high as a 10% excess of alignement between CMB and the galactic ellipticities relative to the uniform distribution. The relatively high signal-to-noise ratio we found should makes possible a detection with the planned CMB data sets, provided that a galaxy survey follow up can be done on a sufficiently large area.
