Surface Photometry of Early-type Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field
The detailed surface photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies in the
Hubble Deep Field is presented as part of a long-term project aimed to settle
strong observational constraints to the theories modelling the evolution of
elliptical galaxies from the early stages. The sample has been extracted, in
the V_606 band, from the catalog by Couch (1996). The analysis of the
luminosity and geometrical profiles, carried out on 162 candidates obeying our
provisional selection criteria, resulted in a list of 99 'bona fide' early-type
galaxies, for which accurate total magnitudes and effective radii were
computed. The comparison with the magnitudes given by Williams et al.(1996)
indicates that the automated photometry tends to underestimate the total
luminosity of the ellipticals. The luminosity profiles of most of galaxies in
our sample follow fairly well the deVaucouleurs law (`Normal' profiles).
However, a relevant fraction of galaxies, even following the deVaucouleurs law
in the main body light distribution, exhibit in the inner region a flattening
of the luminosity profile not attributable to the PSF (`Flat' profiles) or, in
some cases, a complex (multi-nucleus) structure (`Merger' profiles). The
average ellipticity of galaxies belonging to the `Flat' and `Merger' classes is
found to be significantly higher than that of the `Normal' galaxies. Moreover,
even taken into account the relevant uncertainty of the outer position angle
profiles, the amount of isophotal twisting of HDF ellipticals turns out to be

Preliminary validation of an indirect method for discharge evaluation of Pertuso Spring (Central Italy)
This paper deals with the results of the first year of the Environmental Monitoring Plan, related to the catchment project of Pertuso Spring, which is going to be exploited to supply an important water network in the South part of Roma district. The study area is located in the Upper Valley of the Aniene River (Latium, Central Italy), in the outcrop of Triassic-Cenozoic carbonate rocks, and belong to an important karst aquifer. Pertuso Spring is the main outlet of this karst aquifer and is the one of the most important water resource in the southeast part of Latium Region, used for drinking, agriculture and hydroelectric supplies. Karst aquifer feeding Pertuso Spring is an open hydrogeological system aquifer characterized by complex interactions and exchanges between groundwater and surface water which influence the aquifer water budget. Thus, evaluation of groundwater discharge from this karst spring can be affected by difficulties in performing measurements because of the insufficient knowledge about water transfer processes in the hydrological cycle and geometry of drainage conduits.
The aim of this paper is to assess the interactions between karst aquifer feeding Pertuso Spring and Aniene River based on stream discharge measurements and water geochemical tracer data in order to validate an indirect method for karst spring discharge evaluation. As a matter of fact, in this paper, there are presented the results of the application of Magnesium as a reliable tracer of karst spring discharge. This indirect method is based on the elaboration of surface water discharge measurements in relationship with Mg2+ concentration values, determined as for groundwater, coming from Pertuso Spring, as for surface water sample, collected upstream and downstream of Pertuso Spring, along Aniene River streamflow. The application of Magnesium as an environmental tracer provides a means to evaluate discharge of Pertuso Spring, as it came up to be a marker of the mixing of surface water and groundwater. On the other hand, the Magnesium ion concentration provides information for the identification of groundwater flow systems and the main hydrogeochemical processes affecting the composition of water within the karst aquifers
Impact of Electron-Electron Cusp on Configuration Interaction Energies
The effect of the electron-electron cusp on the convergence of configuration
interaction (CI) wave functions is examined. By analogy with the
pseudopotential approach for electron-ion interactions, an effective
electron-electron interaction is developed which closely reproduces the
scattering of the Coulomb interaction but is smooth and finite at zero
electron-electron separation. The exact many-electron wave function for this
smooth effective interaction has no cusp at zero electron-electron separation.
We perform CI and quantum Monte Carlo calculations for He and Be atoms, both
with the Coulomb electron-electron interaction and with the smooth effective
electron-electron interaction. We find that convergence of the CI expansion of
the wave function for the smooth electron-electron interaction is not
significantly improved compared with that for the divergent Coulomb interaction
for energy differences on the order of 1 mHartree. This shows that, contrary to
popular belief, description of the electron-electron cusp is not a limiting

Simultaneous Contralateral Vestibular Schwannoma and Middle Ear Paraganglioma Tumor
To the best of our knowledge, only 2 cases of a simultaneous contralateral vestibular schwannoma (VS) and middle ear paraganglioma (MEP) have previously been reported in literature. We report the third case observed in a 43-year-old male, who presented with an 11-year history of right-sided hearing loss and a 1-year history of left-sided pulsatile tinnitus. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a VS on the right side and computer tomography (CT) identified a Fisch type A1 paraganglioma on the left side. The VS was treated using a translabyrinthine approach and the MEP was kept under radiological observation for 1 year. Due to the growth of the MEP (Fisch type A2), it was treated with excision via a retroauricular approach. Our case was very challenging because there was a different and important pathology on each side, both carrying a risk of deafness as a consequence of the disease and/or the treatments
Early assessment of vestibular function after unilateral cochlear implant surgery
Introduction : Cochlear implantation (CI) has been reported to negatively effect on the vestibular function. The study of the vestibular function has variably been conducted by different types of diagnostic tools. The combined use of modern, rapidly performable diagnostic tools could reveal useful for standardizing the evaluation protocol.
Methods: In a group of 28 subjects undergoing CI, the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), the cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMPS) and the short-form of Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire were investigated pre-operatively and post-operatively (implant on and off) in both the implanted and the contralateral, non-implanted ear. All surgeries were performed with a round window approach (RWA), except for three otosclerosis cases were the extended RWA (eRWA) was used.
Results: The vHIT of the lateral semicircular canal showed a pre-operative vestibular involvement in nearly 50% of the cases, whilst the three canals were contemporarily affected in only 14% of them. In all the hypo-functional subjects, cVEMPs were absent. A low VOR gain in all the investigated SSCC was found in 4 subjects (14%). In those subjects, (21.7%) in whom cVEMPs were pre-operatively present and normal in the operated side, absence of response was post-operatives recorded.
Discussion/Conclusion: The vestibular protocol applied for the study showed to be appropriate for distinguishing between the CI operated and the non-operated ear. In this regard, cVEMPs showed to be more sensitive than vHIT for revealing a vestibular sufferance after CI, although without statistical significance. Finally, the use of the RWA surgery was apparently not avoiding signs of vestibular impairment to occur
Local structure of REFeAsO (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm) oxypnictides studied by Fe K-edge EXAFS
Local structure of REOFeAs (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm) system has been studied as a
function of chemical pressure varied due to different rare-earth size. Fe
K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the
fluorescence mode has permitted to compare systematically the inter-atomic
distances and their mean square relative displacements (MSRD). We find that the
Fe-As bond length and the corresponding MSRD hardly show any change, suggesting
the strongly covalent nature of this bond, while the Fe-Fe and Fe-RE bond
lengths decrease with decreasing rare earth size. The results provide important
information on the atomic correlations that could have direct implication on
the superconductivity and magnetism of REOFeAs system, with the chemical
pressure being a key ingredient
Isotope effect on the E2g phonon and mesoscopic phase separation near the electronic topological transition in Mg1-xAlxB2
We report the boron isotope effect on the E2g phonon mode by micro-Raman
spectroscopy on the ternary Mg1-xAlxB2 system, synthesized with pure isotopes
10B and 11B. The isotope coefficient on the phonon frequency is near 0.5 in the
full range decreasing near x = 0. The intraband electron-phonon (e-ph)
coupling, for the electrons in the sigma band, has been extracted from the E2g
line-width and frequency softening. Tuning the Fermi energy near the electronic
topological transition (ETT), where the sigma Fermi surface changes from 2D to
3D topology the E2g mode, shows the known Kohn anomaly on the 2D side of the
ETT and a splitting of the E2g phonon frequency into a hard and soft component
from x = 0 to x = 0.28. The results suggest a minor role of the intraband
phonon mediated pairing in the control of the high critical temperature in
Mg1-xAlxB2. The common physical features of diborides with the novel multigap
FeAs-based superconductors and cuprates is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Problema-experiencia para construir un modelo redox
En las aulas universitarias, existe una separación muy común entre “teoría”, “trabajo experimental” y “problemas”. En este trabajo se analizan los resultados de una experiencia que busca integrar esas tres actividades. En la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias de la UNCPBA, en Tandil (Argentina), a un grupo de alumnos de primer año, se les propuso un problema a investigar. Debían armar un diseño experimental, ejecutarlo, comparar resultados, extraer inferencias de un hecho empírico, y aplicar conceptos de óxido-reducción. Al comenzar la actividad se percibe el desconcierto de los estudiantes frente a esta problemática inusual para ellos (diseñar un trabajo experimental), pero luego la realizan en forma cooperativa y con entusiasmo
Interfacial contribution to the dielectric response in semiconducting LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6
Impedance measurements have been performed on a sintered polycrystalline
sample of the perovskite LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6. Colossal dielectric permittivity
often is measured in this class of semiconducting materials as a result of
extrinsic factors. Our results show that a large offset in the capacitance,
measured on a series of samples with different thickness, is due to the
interfacial polarization. This contribution then can be removed from the data,
creating a general procedure for dielectric measurements in semiconducting
