    Amplification of High Harmonics Using Weak Perturbative High Frequency Radiation

    The mechanism underlying the substantial amplification of the high-order harmonics q \pm 2K (K integer) upon the addition of a weak seed XUV field of harmonic frequency q\omega to a strong IR field of frequency \omega is analyzed in the framework of the quantum-mechanical Floquet formalism and the semiclassical re-collision model. According to the Floquet analysis, the high-frequency field induces transitions between several Floquet states and leads to the appearance of new dipole cross terms. The semiclassical re-collision model suggests that the origin of the enhancement lies in the time-dependent modulation of the ground electronic state induced by the XUV field.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Project {\tt SANC} (former {\tt CalcPHEP}): Support of Analytic and Numeric calculations for experiments at Colliders

    The project, aimed at the theoretical support of experiments at modern and future accelerators -- TEVATRON, LHC, electron Linear Colliders (TESLA, NLC, CLIC) and muon factories, is presented. Within this project a four-level computer system is being created, which must automatically calculate, at the one-loop precision level the pseudo- and realistic observables (decay rates and event distributions) for more and more complicated processes of elementary particle interaction, using the principle of knowledge storing. It was already used for a recalculation of the EW radiative corrections for Atomic Parity Violation [1] and complete one-loop corrections for the process e+ettˉe^+ e^-\to t\bar{t} [2-4]; for the latter an, agreement up to 11 digits with FeynArts and the other results is found. The version of {\tt SANC} that we describe here is capable of automatically computing the decay rates and the distributions for the decays Z(H,W)ffˉZ(H,W)\to f\bar{f} in the one-loop approximation.Comment: 3 Latex, Presented at ICHEP2002, Amsterdam, July 24-30, 2000; Submitted to Proceeding

    Chemo- and Thermosensory Responsiveness of Grueneberg Ganglion Neurons Relies on Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate Signaling Elements

    Neurons of the Grueneberg ganglion (GG) in the anterior nasal region of mouse pups respond to cool temperatures and to a small set of odorants. While the thermosensory reactivity appears to be mediated by elements of a cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) cascade, the molecular mechanisms underlying the odor-induced responses are unclear. Since odor-responsive GG cells are endowed with elements of a cGMP pathway, specifically the transmembrane guanylyl cyclase subtype GC-G and the cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel CNGA3, the possibility was explored whether these cGMP signaling elements may also be involved in chemosensory GG responses. Experiments with transgenic mice deficient for GC-G or CNGA3 revealed that GG responsiveness to given odorants was significantly diminished in these knockout animals. These findings suggest that a cGMP cascade may be important for both olfactory and thermosensory signaling in the GG. However, in contrast to the thermosensory reactivity, which did not decline over time, the chemosensory response underwent adaptation upon extended stimulation, suggesting that the two transduction processes only partially overlap.     Exploring CP Violation through Correlations in B --> pi K, B_d --> pi^+pi^-, B_s --> K^+K^- Observable Space

    We investigate allowed regions in observable space of B --> pi K, B_d --> pi^+pi^- and B_s --> K^+K^- decays, characterizing these modes in the Standard Model. After a discussion of a new kind of contour plots for the BπKB\to\pi K system, we focus on the mixing- induced and direct CP asymmetries of the decays B_d --> pi^+pi^- and B_s--> K^+K^-. Using experimental information on the CP-averaged B_d --> pi^{+/-}K^{+/-} and B_d --> pi^+pi^- branching ratios, the relevant hadronic penguin parameters can be constrained,implying certain allowed regions in observable space. In the case of B_d --> pi^+pi^-, an interesting situation arises now in view of the recent B-factory measurements of CP violation in this channel, allowing us to obtain new constraints on the CKM angle gamma as a function of the B^0_d--\bar{B^0_d} mixing phase phi_d=2beta, which is fixed through A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> J/psi K_S) up to a twofold ambiguity. If we assume that A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> pi^+pi^-) is positive, as indicated by recent Belle data, and that phi_d is in agreement with the ``indirect'' fits of the unitarity triangle, also the corresponding values for gamma around 60 degrees can be accommodated. On the other hand, for the second solution of phi_d, we obtain a gap around gamma ~ 60 degrees. The allowed region in the space of A_{CP}^{mix}(B_s --> K^+K^-) and A_{CP}^{dir}(B_s --> K^+K^-) is very constrained in the Standard Model, thereby providing a narrow target range for run II of the Tevatron and the experiments of the LHC era.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures.     In Pursuit of New Physics with B_s Decays

    The presence of a sizeable CP-violating phase in B_s^0-B_s^0-bar mixing would be an unambiguous signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. We analyse various possibilities to detect such a new phase considering both tagged and untagged decays. The effects of a sizeable width difference Delta Gamma between the B_s mass eigenstates, on which the untagged analyses rely, are included in all formulae. A novel method to find this phase from simple measurements of lifetimes and branching ratios in untagged decays is proposed. This method does not involve two-exponential fits, which require much larger statistics. For the tagged decays, an outstanding role is played by the observables of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B_s -> J/psi [-> l^+ l^-] \phi [-> K^+K^-] decay products. We list the formulae needed for the angular analysis in the presence of both a new CP-violating phase and a sizeable Delta Gamma, and propose methods to remove a remaining discrete ambiguity in the new phase.     Consumer Purchases of Biotech Sweet Corn: Results from a Market Experiment

    In the increasingly consumer-driven food system, consumer preferences toward agricultural biotechnology have the potential to influence decisions about development and adoption of biotech crop varieties. Current knowledge about consumer attitudes toward biotech foods is largely based on a number of consumer surveys and a growing body of experimental auctions. This paper reports results of a market experiment designed to isolate the effect of the use of biotechnology on consumer choices between two otherwise identical products. Two related varieties of fresh-market sweet corn were grown, labeled, and sold side-by-side in nine participating grocery stores in the Philadelphia area. Sales data indicate a market share of biotech corn of about 45 percent, with store-specific shares varying between 10 and 80 percent. Over 700 surveys were collected in stores. Surprisingly, only 65 percent of respondents noticed that there were two types of corn for sale despite the labeling and merchandising, and 87 percent of the sample spent one minute or less choosing their corn. About half of the respondents had heard of biotechnology before, and 16 percent volunteered the biotechnology trait as an influence on their purchase decision.     Exploring CP Violation with BcB_c Decays

    We point out that the pure ``tree'' decays Bc±Ds±DB_c^\pm\to D^\pm_s D are particularly well suited to extract the CKM angle γ\gamma through amplitude relations. In contrast to conceptually similar strategies using B±K±DB^\pm\to K^\pm D or BdK0DB_d\to K^{\ast0} D decays, the advantage of the BcB_c approach is that the corresponding triangles have three sides of comparable length and do not involve small amplitudes. Decays of the type Bc±D±DB_c^\pm\to D^\pm D -- the UU-spin counterparts of Bc±Ds±DB_c^\pm\to D^\pm_s D -- can be added to the analysis, as well as channels, where the Ds±D^\pm_s- and D±D^\pm-mesons are replaced by higher resonances.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures, reference adde

    Taming the Penguin in the B0(t) -> Pi+Pi- CP-asymmetry: Observables and Minimal Theoretical Input

    Penguin contributions, being not negligible in general, can hide the information on the CKM angle alpha coming from the measurement of the time-dependent B0(t) -> pi+pi- CP-asymmetry. Nevertheless, we show that this information can be summarized in a set of simple equations, expressing alpha as a multi-valued function of a single theoretically unknown parameter, which conveniently can be chosen as a well-defined ratio of penguin to tree amplitudes. Using these exact analytic expressions, free of any assumption besides the Standard Model, and some reasonable hypotheses to constrain the modulus of the penguin amplitude, we derive several new upper bounds on the penguin-induced shift |2alpha-2alpha_eff|, generalizing the recent result of Grossman and Quinn. These bounds depend on the averaged branching ratios of some decays (pi0pi0, K0K0bar, K+-pi-+) particularly sensitive to the penguin. On the other hand, with further and less conservative approximations, we show that the knowledge of the B+- -> Kpi+- branching ratio alone gives sufficient information to extract the free parameter without the need of other measurements, and without knowing |V_td| or |V_ub|. More generally, knowing the modulus of the penguin amplitude with an accuracy of ~30% might result in an extraction of alpha competitive with the experimentally more difficult isospin analysis. We also show that our framework allows to recover most of the previous approaches in a transparent and simple way, and in some cases to improve them.
