Bone allografts in the osteosynthesis of traumatic fractures
Nos últimos anos, assistimos a importantes avanços científicos na área da segurança microbiológica, na imunologia e no
conhecimento do comportamento biológico dos aloenxertos do aparelho locomotor, assim como a alterações da legislação
que regulamenta as transplantações de orgãos e tecidos de origem humana, o que conduziu a alterações importantes na organização dos Bancos de Tecidos em todo o mundo.
Os aloenxertos ósseos podem estar indicados na osteossíntese de fracturas ósseas traumáticas e no tratamento das complicações desse tipo de lesões, área que não tem sido suficientemente divulgada na literatura internacional.
No período compreendido entre 1982 e 2007, o BancoTecidos dos HUC disponibilizou 5231 aloenxertos do aparelho
locomotor para aplicação clínica. De entre estes e no período compreendido entre os anos 1994 e 2006, foram usados 1078
aloenxertos ósseos na osteossíntese de fracturas ósseas traumáticas e no tratamento de complicações de fracturas, na condição de medida terapêutica complementar: 500 esponjosos granulados, 98 maciços e 480 desmineralizados.
O número das fracturas ósseas traumáticas e dos casos com complicações de fracturas foi de 420, distribuídos da seguinte
forma: 290 localizados no fémur, 84 na tíbia, 32 no úmero e 14 no rádio. As lesões da extremidade distal do fémur representaram a causa mais frequente da aplicação dos aloenxertos.
Nesta série, não foram confirmados casos de infecção associada ao aloenxerto, nem qualquer caso de transmissão de
doenças virais aos receptores. A consolidação das fracturas foi conseguida entre os 3 e os 6 meses. Uma reabsorção parcial do enxerto foi verificada em 21 casos (5%), em correlação directa com as deficientes condições vasculares do leito receptor e com a técnica cirúrgica.

Learning Interpretable Rules for Multi-label Classification
Multi-label classification (MLC) is a supervised learning problem in which,
contrary to standard multiclass classification, an instance can be associated
with several class labels simultaneously. In this chapter, we advocate a
rule-based approach to multi-label classification. Rule learning algorithms are
often employed when one is not only interested in accurate predictions, but
also requires an interpretable theory that can be understood, analyzed, and
qualitatively evaluated by domain experts. Ideally, by revealing patterns and
regularities contained in the data, a rule-based theory yields new insights in
the application domain. Recently, several authors have started to investigate
how rule-based models can be used for modeling multi-label data. Discussing
this task in detail, we highlight some of the problems that make rule learning
considerably more challenging for MLC than for conventional classification.
While mainly focusing on our own previous work, we also provide a short

Historical analysis of the Brazilian cervical cancer screening program from 2006 to 2013: a time for reflection
BACKGROUND: The Cervical Cancer Database of the Brazilian National Health Service (SISCOLO) contains information regarding all cervical cytological tests and, if properly explored, can be used as a tool for monitoring and managing the cervical cancer screening program. The aim of this study was to perform a historical analysis of the cervical cancer screening program in Brazil from 2006 to 2013.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data necessary to calculate quality indicators were obtained from the SISCOLO, a Brazilian health system tool. Joinpoint analysis was used to calculate the annual percentage change.
RESULTS: We observed important trends showing decreased rates of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and an increased rate of rejected exams from 2009 to 2013. The index of positivity was maintained at levels below those indicated by international standards; very low frequencies of unsatisfactory cases were observed over the study period, which partially contradicts the low rate of positive cases. The number of positive cytological diagnoses was below that expected, considering that developed countries with low frequencies of cervical cancer detect more lesions annually.
CONCLUSIONS: The evolution of indicators from 2006 to 2013 suggests that actions must be taken to improve the effectiveness of cervical cancer control in Brazil
Supersymmetric Monojets at the Large Hadron Collider
Supersymmetric monojets may be produced at the Large Hadron Collider by the
process qg -> squark neutralino_1 -> q neutralino_1 neutralino_1, leading to a
jet recoiling against missing transverse momentum. We discuss the feasibility
and utility of the supersymmetric monojet signal. In particular, we examine the
possible precision with which one can ascertain the neutralino_1-squark-quark
coupling via the rate for monojet events. Such a coupling contains information
on the composition of the neutralino_1 and helps bound dark matter direct
detection cross-sections and the dark matter relic density of the neutralino_1.
It also provides a check of the supersymmetric relation between gauge couplings

Evolução na utilização e nos gastos de uma operadora de saúde
Brazil’s aging population and the rising number of people reliant upon the country’s supplementary healthcare system have elicited the concern of public and private managers regarding the increase in healthcare costs. In this paper, the costs per gender, per type of medical expenses and per age group of a major Brazilian self-managed healthcare provider between 2007 and 2013 were analyzed. This healthcare provider is of interest because, besides portraying a single condition of revenue growth restricted to the existing contributors, it also replicates the demographic profile expected for Brazil in 2050, when approximately one-third of its population will be over 60 years of age. The analyses confirm the current literature as they show an increase in healthcare plan usage by the elderly and the difference between admission rates by gender. They also reveal an increase in average length of stay in hospital and the increase in medical costs far above inflation, especially for materials and medicines. It is hoped that this study will help scholars and others interested in comparisons of medical expense trends, especially by age and sex, and that it encourages further collaboration on the sustainability of health insurance providers in Brazil
Tracking of fatness during childhood, adolescence and young adulthood: a 7-year follow-up study in Madeira Island, Portugal
Aims: Investigating tracking of fatness from childhood to adolescence, early adolescence to young adulthood and late adolescence to young adulthood. Subjects and methods: Participants from the Madeira Growth Study were followed during an average period of 7.2 years. Height, body mass, skin-folds and circumferences were measured, nine health- and performance-related tests were administered and the Baecke questionnaire was used to assess physical activity. Skeletal maturity was estimated using the TW3 method. Results: The prevalence of overweight plus obesity ranged from 8.2–20.0% at baseline and from 20.4–40.0% at followup, in boys. Corresponding percentages for girls were 10.6– 12.0% and 13.2–18.0%. Inter-age correlations for fatness indicators ranged from 0.43–0.77. BMI, waist circumference and sum of skin-folds at 8, 12 and 16-years old were the main predictors of these variables at 15, 19 and 23-years old, respectively. Strength, muscular endurance and aerobic fitness were negatively related to body fatness. Physical activity and maturation were independently associated with adolescent (15 years) and young adult (19 years) fatness. Conclusions: Over 7.2 years, tracking was moderate-to-high for fatness. Variance was explained by fatness indicators and to a small extent by physical fitness, physical activity and maturation
Supersymmetric mass spectra and the seesaw type-I scale
We calculate supersymmetric mass spectra with cMSSM boundary conditions and a
type-I seesaw mechanism added to explain current neutrino data. Using
published, estimated errors on SUSY mass observables for a combined LHC+ILC
analysis, we perform a theoretical analysis to identify parameter
regions where pure cMSSM and cMSSM plus seesaw type-I might be distinguishable
with LHC+ILC data. The most important observables are determined to be the
(left) smuon and selectron masses and the splitting between them, respectively.
Splitting in the (left) smuon and selectrons is tiny in most of cMSSM parameter
space, but can be quite sizeable for large values of the seesaw scale,
. Thus, for very roughly GeV hints for type-I
seesaw might appear in SUSY mass measurements. Since our numerical results
depend sensitively on forecasted error bars, we discuss in some detail the
accuracies, which need to be achieved, before a realistic analysis searching
for signs of type-I seesaw in SUSY spectra can be carried out.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Strong interface-induced spin-orbit coupling in graphene on WS2
Interfacial interactions allow the electronic properties of graphene to be
modified, as recently demonstrated by the appearance of satellite Dirac cones
in the band structure of graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrates.
Ongoing research strives to explore interfacial interactions in a broader class
of materials in order to engineer targeted electronic properties. Here we show
that at an interface with a tungsten disulfide (WS2) substrate, the strength of
the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene is very strongly enhanced. The
induced SOI leads to a pronounced low-temperature weak anti-localization (WAL)
effect, from which we determine the spin-relaxation time. We find that
spin-relaxation time in graphene is two-to-three orders of magnitude smaller on
WS2 than on SiO2 or hBN, and that it is comparable to the intervalley
scattering time. To interpret our findings we have performed first-principle
electronic structure calculations, which both confirm that carriers in
graphene-on-WS2 experience a strong SOI and allow us to extract a
spin-dependent low-energy effective Hamiltonian. Our analysis further shows
that the use of WS2 substrates opens a possible new route to access topological

Radiogenic backgrounds in the NEXT double beta decay experiment
Natural radioactivity represents one of the main backgrounds in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay. Within the NEXT physics program, the radioactivity- induced backgrounds are measured with the NEXT-White detector. Data from 37.9 days of low-background operations at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc with xenon depleted in 136Xe are analyzed to derive a total background rate of (0.84±0.02) mHz above 1000 keV. The comparison of data samples with and without the use of the radon abatement system demonstrates that the contribution of airborne-Rn is negligible. A radiogenic background model is built upon the extensive radiopurity screening campaign conducted by the NEXT collaboration. A spectral fit to this model yields the specific contributions of 60Co, 40K, 214Bi and 208Tl to the total background rate, as well as their location in the detector volumes. The results are used to evaluate the impact of the radiogenic backgrounds in the double beta decay analyses, after the application of topological cuts that reduce the total rate to (0.25±0.01) mHz. Based on the best-fit background model, the NEXT-White median sensitivity to the two-neutrino double beta decay is found to be 3.5σ after 1 year of data taking. The background measurement in a Qββ±100 keV energy window validates the best-fit background model also for the neutrinoless double beta decay search with NEXT-100. Only one event is found, while the model expectation is (0.75±0.12) events. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
