Investigating ultrafast quantum magnetism with machine learning
We investigate the efficiency of the recently proposed Restricted Boltzmann
Machine (RBM) representation of quantum many-body states to study both the
static properties and quantum spin dynamics in the two-dimensional Heisenberg
model on a square lattice. For static properties we find close agreement with
numerically exact Quantum Monte Carlo results in the thermodynamical limit. For
dynamics and small systems, we find excellent agreement with exact
diagonalization, while for systems up to N=256 spins close consistency with
interacting spin-wave theory is obtained. In all cases the accuracy converges
fast with the number of network parameters, giving access to much bigger
systems than feasible before. This suggests great potential to investigate the
quantum many-body dynamics of large scale spin systems relevant for the
description of magnetic materials strongly out of equilibrium.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, data up to N=256 spins added, minor change
Long-term prediction of adherence to continuous positive air pressure therapy for the treatment of moderate/severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
BACKGROUND: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a highly effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). However, poor adherence is a limiting factor, and a significant proportion of patients are unable to tolerate CPAP. The aim of this study was to determine predictors of long-term non-compliance with CPAP.
METHODS: CPAP treatment was prescribed to all consecutive patients with moderate or severe OSAS (AHI ≥15 events/h) (n = 295) who underwent a full-night CPAP titration study at home between February 1, 2002 and December 1, 2016. Adherence was defined as CPAP use for at least 4 h per night and five days per week. Subjects had periodical follow-up visits including clinical and biochemical evaluation and assessment of adherence to CPAP.
RESULTS: Median follow-up observation was 74.8 (24.2/110.9) months. The percentage of OSAS patients adhering to CPAP was 41.4% (42.3% in males and 37.0% in females), and prevalence was significantly higher in severe OSAS than in moderate (51.8% vs. 22.1%; p < 0.001; respectively). At multivariate analysis, lower severity of OSAS (HR = 0.66; CI 95 0.46-0.94) p < 0.023), cigarette smoking (HR = 1.72; CI 95 1.13-2.61); p = 0.011), and previous cardiovascular events (HR = 1.95; CI 95 1.03-3.70; p = 0.04) were the only independent predictors of long-term non-adherence to CPAP after controlling for age, gender, and metabolic syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort of patients with moderate/severe OSAS who were prescribed CPAP therapy, long-term compliance to treatment was present in less than half of the patients. Adherence was positively associated with OSAS severity and negatively associated with cigarette smoking and previous cardiovascular events at baseline
Inquinamento microbiologico delle sale operatorie: analisi critica di due decenni di sorveglianza
Obiettivo dello studio è stato quello di analizzare i risultati delle campagne di monitoraggio microbiologico delle sale operatorie effettuate negli ultimi due decenni presso il Policlinico di Roma, al fine di descrivere l’andamento nel tempo dei livelli di contaminazione riscontrati e di valutare eventuali cambiamenti significativi. Sono stati presi in esame i campionamenti microbiologici dell’aria effettuati all’interno di 14 blocchi operatori tra il 1992 ed il 2010. I risultati dei campionamenti sono stati aggregati in quattro periodi di tempo (1992-1996; 1996-2000; 2001-2005; 2006-2010) ed è stato analizzata la distribuzione nel tempo dei risultati dei campionamenti rispetto al limite proposto all'ISPESL per le sale at-rest (≤35 UFC/mc). La stessa analisi è stata ripetuta dopo la stratificazione per livello di rischio delle sale operatorie (AR e BR). Al fine di verificare il livello di significatività delle variazioni temporali nelle distribuzioni dei risultati si è fatto ricorso al test del x2 per il trend. Si è osservato un significativo trend in diminuzione del numero di sale con livelli di contaminazione superiori a quello indicato (x2 per trend=8,94; p<0,025). Tale riduzione ha riguardato soprattutto le sale operatorie AR (x2 per trend=7,33; p<0,05). I risultati ottenuti fanno ritenere che le misure adottate nelle sale ad AR siano risultate efficaci. Development and tests of a new prototype detector for the XAFS beamline at Elettra Synchrotron in Trieste
The XAFS beamline at Elettra Synchrotron in Trieste combines X-ray absorption
spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to provide chemically specific structural
information of materials. It operates in the energy range 2.4-27 keV by using a
silicon double reflection Bragg monochromator. The fluorescence measurement is
performed in place of the absorption spectroscopy when the sample transparency
is too low for transmission measurements or the element to study is too diluted
in the sample. We report on the development and on the preliminary tests of a
new prototype detector based on Silicon Drift Detectors technology and the
SIRIO ultra low noise front-end ASIC. The new system will be able to reduce
drastically the time needed to perform fluorescence measurements, while keeping
a short dead time and maintaining an adequate energy resolution to perform
spectroscopy. The custom-made silicon sensor and the electronics are designed

Spectral and polarimetric characterization of the Gas Pixel Detector filled with dimethyl ether
The Gas Pixel Detector belongs to the very limited class of gas detectors
optimized for the measurement of X-ray polarization in the emission of
astrophysical sources. The choice of the mixture in which X-ray photons are
absorbed and photoelectrons propagate, deeply affects both the energy range of
the instrument and its performance in terms of gain, track dimension and
ultimately, polarimetric sensitivity. Here we present the characterization of
the Gas Pixel Detector with a 1 cm thick cell filled with dimethyl ether (DME)
at 0.79 atm, selected among other mixtures for the very low diffusion
coefficient. Almost completely polarized and monochromatic photons were
produced at the calibration facility built at INAF/IASF-Rome exploiting Bragg
diffraction at nearly 45 degrees. For the first time ever, we measured the
modulation factor and the spectral capabilities of the instrument at energies
as low as 2.0 keV, but also at 2.6 keV, 3.7 keV, 4.0 keV, 5.2 keV and 7.8 keV.
These measurements cover almost completely the energy range of the instrument
and allows to compare the sensitivity achieved with that of the standard

Exposure to active and passive smoking during pregnancy and severe small for gestational age at term
Objective. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between active smoking as well as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure and severe small for gestational age (SGA) at term in a sample of pregnant Italian women. Methods. A case-control study was conducted in nine cities in Italy between October 1999 and September 2000. Cases of severe SGA were singleton, live born, at term children with a birth weight5th percentile for gestational age. Controls (10:1 to cases) were enrolled from among singleton at term births that occurred in the same hospitals one or two days after delivery of the case, with a birth weight10th percentile for gestational age. A total of 84 cases of severe SGA and 858 controls were analyzed. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess active smoking and ETS exposure, as well as potential confounders. Results. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a relationship between active smoking during pregnancy and severe SGA (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-3.68). ETS exposure was associated with severe SGA (adjusted OR 2.51, 95% CI 1.59-3.95) with a dose-response relationship to the number of smokers in the home
Evaluating visitor experiences with interactive art
The Music Room is an interactive installation that allows visitor to compose classical music by moving throughout a space. The distance between them and their average speed maps the emotionality of music: in particular, distance influences the pleasantness of the music, while speed influences its intensity. This paper focuses on the evaluation of visitors' experience with The Music Room by examining log-data, video footages, interviews, and questionnaires, as collected in two public exhibitions of the installation. We examined this data to the identify the factors that fostered the engagement and to understand how players appropriated the original design idea. Reconsidering our design assumptions against behavioural data, we noticed a number of unexpected behaviours, which induced us to make some considerations on design and evaluation of interactive art
The imaging properties of the Gas Pixel Detector as a focal plane polarimeter
X-rays are particularly suited to probe the physics of extreme objects.
However, despite the enormous improvements of X-ray Astronomy in imaging,
spectroscopy and timing, polarimetry remains largely unexplored. We propose the
photoelectric polarimeter Gas Pixel Detector (GPD) as an instrument candidate
to fill the gap of more than thirty years of lack of measurements. The GPD, in
the focus of a telescope, will increase the sensitivity of orders of magnitude.
Moreover, since it can measure the energy, the position, the arrival time and
the polarization angle of every single photon, allows to perform polarimetry of
subsets of data singled out from the spectrum, the light curve or the image of
source. The GPD has an intrinsic very fine imaging capability and in this work
we report on the calibration campaign carried out in 2012 at the PANTER X-ray
test facility of the Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur extraterrestrische Physik of
Garching (Germany) in which, for the first time, we coupled it to a JET-X
optics module with a focal length of 3.5 m and an angular resolution of 18
arcsec at 4.5 keV. This configuration was proposed in 2012 aboard the X-ray
Imaging Polarimetry Explorer (XIPE) in response to the ESA call for a small
mission. We derived the imaging and polarimetric performance for extended
sources like Pulsar Wind Nebulae and Supernova Remnants as case studies for the
XIPE configuration, discussing also possible improvements by coupling the
detector with advanced optics, having finer angular resolution and larger

Why are Prices Sticky? Evidence from Business Survey Data
This paper offers new insights on the price setting behaviour of German retail firms using a novel dataset that
consists of a large panel of monthly business surveys from 1991-2006. The firm-level data allows matching changes
in firms' prices to several other firm-characteristics. Moreover, information on price expectations allow analyzing
the determinants of price updating. Using univariate and bivariate ordered probit specifications, empirical menu
cost models are estimated relating the probability of price adjustment and price updating, respectively, to both
time- and state- dependent variables. First, results suggest an important role for state-dependence; changes in
the macroeconomic and institutional environment as well as firm-specific factors are significantly related to the
timing of price adjustment. These findings imply that price setting models should endogenize the timing of price
adjustment in order to generate realistic predictions concerning the transmission of monetary policy. Second, an
analysis of price expectations yields similar results providing evidence in favour of state-dependent sticky plan
models. Third, intermediate input cost changes are among the most important determinants of price adjustment
suggesting that pricing models should explicitly incorporate price setting at different production stages. However, the results show that adjustment to input cost changes takes time indicating "additional stickiness" at the last stage of processing
