    Peripherality and proximity. Do business support services matter?

    This essay is based on empirical evidence from the case of Tuscany (Italy) and follows previous work on the role and meaning of image in regional development and innovation policies (Bellini, 2004). Discussions about image and branding policies is usually placed in the framework of "place marketing" and marketing literature helps in defining the features, components and main characters of image and of its relationship with local identity. We suggest, however, that managing images is also a political process with significant impact in supporting and shaping the scenario (perceptions and expectations) for innovation policies. In fact this process implies a competition between images in order to "control" the representation of the past, present and future of an area. This competition aims at influencing the policy agenda by manipulating the gap between image and identity. In other words, we suggest that image-related policies should be considered part of the toolbox of a modern innovation policy.

    Exploring protandry and pupal size selection for Aedes albopictus sex separation

    Background: We explored the possibility to improve male/female separation (sexing) in Aedes albopictus by selection of two strains, one toward increasing sex dimorphism and another toward increasing protandry. In the laboratory we selected and crossed small males with large females to exploit dimorphism, and early pupating males with late pupating females to exploit protandry. Results: While selection for enhanced dimorphism was not a profitable character, the selection for enhanced protandry up to F10 produced significant improvement in the time interval between male and female pupation. By collecting the pupae at 24 h from the beginning of pupation, without any sieving operation, we obtained about 28.50% of pupae (calculated in relation to the estimated initial number of first instar larvae used), vs 26.49% we had in the control strain, and, more interestingly, when checking the sex ratio of these pupae we observed a presence of females of 0.92% vs 23.02% in the control strain. We also modified our egg hatching protocol from the previous standard procedure that required keeping the eggs in the glass hatching container overnight (for about 14-16 h) to a new protocol where eggs are kept in the hatching container for 4 h in order to obtain more synchronized larvae. This was possible without any reduction in the egg hatching rate. Conclusions: In Aedes albopictus it is possible to develop hyper-protandric strains useful to produce male pupae without applying other sexing systems. This represents a considerable achievement assisting the Sterile Insect Technique application, allowing improvement of the current sexing method based on mechanical separation. More investigations are under way in order to further enhance the male productivity capacity of the strain and to determine whether the selection has any impact on the male fitness parameters

    Contextual impacts on industrial processes brought by the digital transformation of manufacturing: a systematic review

    The digital transformation of manufacturing (a phenomenon also known as "Industry 4.0" or "Smart Manufacturing") is finding a growing interest both at practitioner and academic levels, but is still in its infancy and needs deeper investigation. Even though current and potential advantages of digital manufacturing are remarkable, in terms of improved efficiency, sustainability, customization, and flexibility, only a limited number of companies has already developed ad hoc strategies necessary to achieve a superior performance. Through a systematic review, this study aims at assessing the current state of the art of the academic literature regarding the paradigm shift occurring in the manufacturing settings, in order to provide definitions as well as point out recurring patterns and gaps to be addressed by future research. For the literature search, the most representative keywords, strict criteria, and classification schemes based on authoritative reference studies were used. The final sample of 156 primary publications was analyzed through a systematic coding process to identify theoretical and methodological approaches, together with other significant elements. This analysis allowed a mapping of the literature based on clusters of critical themes to synthesize the developments of different research streams and provide the most representative picture of its current state. Research areas, insights, and gaps resulting from this analysis contributed to create a schematic research agenda, which clearly indicates the space for future evolutions of the state of knowledge in this field

    A bag of tricks: Using proper motions of Galactic stars to identify the Hercules ultra-faint dwarf galaxy members

    Hercules is the prototype of the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies. To date, there are still no firm constraints on its total luminosity, due to the difficulty of disentangling Hercules bona-fide stars from the severe Galactic field contamination. In order to better constrain Hercules properties we aim at removing foreground and background contaminants in the galaxy field using the proper motions of the Milky Way stars and the colour-colour diagram. We have obtained images of Hercules in the rSloan, BBessel and Uspec bands with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and LBC-BIN mode capabilities. The rSloan new data-set combined with data from the LBT archive span a time baseline of about 5 yr, allowing us to measure for the first time proper motions of stars in the Hercules direction. The Uspec data along with existing LBT photometry allowed us to use colour-colour diagram to further remove the field contamination. Thanks to a highly-accurate procedure to derive the rSloan-filter geometric distortion solution for the LBC-red, we were able to measure stellar relative proper motions to a precision of better than 5 mas yr^-1 down to rSloan=22 mag and disentangle a significant fraction (\>90\%) of Milky Way contaminants. We ended up with a sample of 528 sources distributed over a large portion of the galaxy body (0.12 deg^2). Of these sources, 171 turned out to be background galaxies and additional foreground stars, from the analysis of the Uspec - BBessel vs. BBessel - rSloan colour-colour diagram. This leaves us with a sample of 357 likely members of the Hercules UFD. We compared the cleaned colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) with evolutionary models and synthetic CMDs, confirming the presence in Hercules of an old population (t=12\pm 2 Gyr), with a wide spread in metallicity (-3.3\<[Fe/H]\<-1.8).Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&

    Developing a strong and vibrant economic base is one of the European Union priorities for 2019-2024. According to European policymakers, research and inno-vation activities have a direct impact on the level of prosperity and well-being of European society. EU regional policy is among other issues concentrated on the sup-port of the development of SMEs and strengthening regional research and innovation activities. EU Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) prioritizes research and innovation investment as a tool for the development of the European regions. Italy is an indus-trial country; its manufacturing companies represent the engine of economic growth and development, with their ability to produce wealth and job opportunities. Starting from the structure of the Italian economy characterized by widespread entrepreneur-ship, creating a favorable environment for businesses therefore responds to a specific public interest. For this reason, industrial policy is back at the core of the govern-ment’s agenda. Knowing how to take up this challenge, however, not only concerns the government, but mainly entrepreneurs, to whom the new development and digi-talization plans are providing agile and flexible tools to grow, innovate and acquire competitiveness. The development of collaborations between research and develop-ment institutions and SMEs is one of the measures to achieve these goals. By con-sidering the representative Lazio Region case, this study seeks to understand the contribution of the joint work of these platforms to the regional development and local entrepreneurial competitiveness through an in-depth analysis of strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the ongoing smart specialization and digital transformation strategies

    Drinking water quality assessment using a fuzzy inference system method. A case study of Rome (Italy)

    Drinking water quality assessment is a major issue today, as it is crucial to supply safe drinking water to ensure the well-being of society. Predicting drinking water quality helps strengthen water management and fight water pollution; technologies and practices for drinking water quality assessment are continuously improving; artificial intelligence methods prove their efficiency in this domain. This research effort seeks a hierarchical fuzzy model for predicting drinking water quality in Rome (Italy). The Mamdani fuzzy inference system is applied with different defuzzification methods. The proposed model includes three fuzzy intermediate models and one fuzzy final model. Each model consists of three input parameters and 27 fuzzy rules. A water quality assessment model is developed with a dataset that considers nine parameters (alkalinity, hardness, pH, Ca, Mg, fluoride, sulphate, nitrates, and iron). These nine parameters of drinking water are anticipated to be within the acceptable limits set to protect human health. Fuzzy-logic-based methods have been demonstrated to be appropriate to address uncertainty and subjectivity in drinking water quality assessment; they are an effective method for managing complicated, uncertain water systems and predicting drinking water quality. The proposed method can provide an effective solution for complex systems; this method can be modified easily to improve performance

    Body mass index affects kidney transplant outcomes. A cohort study over 5 years using a steroid sparing protocol

    Background: There is controversy regarding the suitability of high body mass index (BMI) candidates accessing the transplant waitlist. Patients and methods: Observational study on consecutive kidney transplant recipients undergoing surgery between January 2014 and March 2016 at our center. Patients were stratified according to BMI. Survival outcomes and graft function were analyzed to investigate the effect of donor’s and recipient’s demographic characteristics. Results: 396 kidney transplant recipients: 260 males, mean age 51.8 ± 15.9 years, followed up for a mean time of 5.86 ± 2.29 years. Mean BMI 26.2 ± 5.1. BMI class 1 (20 ≤ BMI ≤ 24.9) n=133, class 2 (25 ≤ BMI ≤ 29.9) n= 155, class 3 (30 ≤ BMI ≤34.9) n=53, class 4 (BMI ≥ 35) n=21, class V (BMI ≤ 19.9) n=34. Patient survival was not significantly different according to the recipient’s BMI class (p=0.476); graft survival was affected (p=0.031), as well as graft function up to 2 years post-transplant and at 4 years follow up (p=0.016). At logistic regression the factors independently associated with graft loss were only donor’s age (p=0.05) and BMI class of the recipient (p=0.002). Conclusions: Obesity did not impact on patient’s survival but affected graft function and graft loss

    Growing digitalization of the urban environment, especially in smart cities, enables the development of e-government initiatives. The Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) initiative of the European Commission supports European cities in their transition towards a green and digital economy; it empowers cities to implement e-government initiatives. This study represents the first attempt to provide a detailed overview of the actions undertaken in the e-government do- main in the framework of the ICC project in Italy and Greece; it offers insightful evidence about the programs and initiatives implemented by local governments to support the implementation and development of e-government initiatives in the European smart city domain. The study reveals the importance given to ad- ministrative simplification and the adoption of online platforms to offer effective and user-friendly services to citizens and stakeholders, the strong emphasis on open data culture and platform development, and the importance of citizen in- volvement and engagement in developing smart city initiatives

    Biological Aspects, Advancements and Techno-Economical Evaluation of Biological Methanation for the Recycling and Valorization of CO2

    Nowadays, sustainable and renewable energy production is a global priority. Over the past decade, several Power-to-X (PtX) technologies have been proposed to store and convert the surplus of renewable energies into chemical bonds of chemicals produced by different processes. CO2 is a major contributor to climate change, yet it is also an undervalued source of carbon that could be recycled and represents an opportunity to generate renewable energy. In this context, PtX technologies would allow for CO2 valorization into renewable fuels while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With this work we want to provide an up-to-date overview of biomethanation as a PtX technology by considering the biological aspects and the main parameters affecting its application and scalability at an industrial level. Particular attention will be paid to the concept of CO2-streams valorization and to the integration of the process with renewable energies. Aspects related to new promising technologies such as in situ, ex situ, hybrid biomethanation and the concept of underground methanation will be discussed, also in connection with recent application cases. Furthermore, the technical and economic feasibility will be critically analyzed to highlight current options and limitations for implementing a sustainable process
