Limit points of lines of minima in Thurston's boundary of Teichmueller space

Given two measured laminations mu and nu in a hyperbolic surface which fill up the surface, Kerckhoff [Lines of Minima in Teichmueller space, Duke Math J. 65 (1992) 187-213] defines an associated line of minima along which convex combinations of the length functions of mu and nu are minimised. This is a line in Teichmueller space which can be thought as analogous to the geodesic in hyperbolic space determined by two points at infinity. We show that when mu is uniquely ergodic, this line converges to the projective lamination [mu], but that when mu is rational, the line converges not to [mu], but rather to the barycentre of the support of mu. Similar results on the behaviour of Teichmueller geodesics have been proved by Masur [Two boundaries of Teichmueller space, Duke Math. The effect of Positive Parenting Program on pathological Symptoms of children suffered from little attention and hyperactivity

The objective of this study lay in investigating the effect of Positive Parenting Program on pathological Symptoms of children (aged 4 to 12) who received little attention and suffered from hyperactivity disorder. The method of study is the pseudo-experimental along with pretest and posttest. The society entailed mothers of 4-12 year-old- children who went to two clinics . After primary evaluations done according to the criteria of entering the sample, 20 persons were selected and randomly placed in the two groups of trial and control; then, the chosen group was trained in positive parenting group having an 8 session program each took 120 minutes. By using Symptom Checklist ñ 4 to measuring ADHD symptoms, subjects are assessed in pretest, posttest and follow up. The data was analyzed by Multivariate Covariance Analysis. Study findings have indicated that performing Positive Parenting Program resulted in reduction of key symptoms of ADHD in suffering children in comparison to the controlled group. Thus, it is suggested that the medication agents apply such procedure to aid the suffering children

Core-to-Cubic Strength Ratio for Historical-Like Concrete

Coring is considered to provide the best estimate of concrete compressive strength in existing structures and is common-ly used to calibrate Non-Destructive and Moderately Destructive Techniques. Historical concrete, produced in the pre-code period until the \u201820s, significantly differs from modern concrete due to lack of standardization, improper rules of thumbs and to aggregate shape (round, smooth and often excessively large aggregates) and proportioning. Therefore, the applicability of the procedures calibrated on modern concrete to an historical one, also coring, is an issue that needs to be discussed. In this paper, an experimental campaign on historical-like concrete, i.e. with the same defects as histor-ical concrete, aims at identifying the reliability of drilled cores due to the effect of round aggregates. The results show that standard procedures commonly used on modern concrete cannot be directly applied to historical concrete: drilled cores suffer from scale effects (core diameter) and from cutting damage of the material much more than modern con-crete. In detail, the core-to-cubic ratio, that modern codes assume in the range 0.70-0.85, due to the dimension and shape of the aggregates is found inside a larger range, 0.70-1.00, and, as opposed to modern concrete, is found to be decreasing as concrete strength increases. Besides, the diameter of the core is found to have a relevant effect on the estimate of the material compressive strength and on the core-to-cubic strength ratio, pointing out that the dimension of the core affects the results much more than for modern concrete. This latter result, that needs further research, points out that historical concretes may be rather different from modern ones and probably need larger cores to be drilled than modern concrete due to the larger dimension of aggregates that is often found in pre-code concrete

Racism in Arabic literature: Glimpses from Poetry, novel and folklore: ظواهر عنصرية في الأدب العربي - ملامح من الشعر والرواية والسير الشعبية

This paper discusses the idea of racism in Arabic literature. It mainly focuses on the subjective representation of black people as early as the pre-Islamic era until the modern ages. We trace the subjective representation of black people in poetry, the novel and folklore. In this paper, we do not intend we defend the Arabic culture or Arabic literature, nor do we aim to beautify the biased representation of people of color in Arabic writings. Rather, we will try to study this phenomenon in an objective and balanced way. In this regard, we would like also to reiterate the fact that the image of black people in Western literature is not in any way brighter than their depiction in Arabic literature.</jats:p
