An investigation of thresholds in air pollution-mortality effects
In this paper we introduce and implement new techniques to investigate threshold effects in air pollution-mortality relationships. Our key interest is in measuring the dose-response relationship above and below a given threshold level where we allow for a large number of potential explanatory variables to trigger the threshold effect. This is in contrast to existing approaches that usually focus on a single threshold trigger. We allow for a myriad of threshold effects within a Bayesian statistical framework that accounts for model uncertainty (i.e. uncertainty about which threshold trigger and explanatory variables are appropriate). We apply these techniques in an empirical exercise using daily data from Toronto for 1992-1997. We investigate the existence and nature of threshold effects in the relationship between mortality and ozone (O3), total particulate matter (PM) and an index of other conventionally occurring air pollutants. In general, we find the effects of the pollutants we consider on mortality to be statistically indistinguishable from zero with no evidence of thresholds. The one exception is ozone, for which results present an ambiguous picture. Ozone has no significant effect on mortality when we exclude threshold effects from the analysis. Allowing for thresholds we find a positive and significant effect for this pollutant when the threshold trigger is the average change in ozone two days ago. However, this significant effect is not observed after controlling for PM
On Paragrassmann Differential Calculus
Explicit general constructions of paragrassmann calculus with one and many

The Independent And Combined Effects Of Hypoxia And Tributyltin On The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica
Oysters are vital to the health of estuarine ecosystems and provide critical ecosystem services, such as water quality improvement, nursery habitat for commercially important fisheries, and shoreline stabilization. Despite their ecological and economic importance, oyster reefs are exposed to many stressors, and oyster populations in Mississippi have declined dramatically in recent years. The present study focuses on the effects of hypoxia and tributyltin (TBT) on the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Hypoxic events are increasingly comin coastal ecosystems worldwide, and TBT is a legacy toxicant once used as an antifoulant. The effects of these stressors were assessed on adult oysters deployed in the Mississippi Sound, where they experienced a natural hypoxic event, and in the laboratory, where oysters were exposed to either hypoxia or TBT alone or to a combination of the stressors (hypoxia+TBT). Effects were quantified through the measurement of mRNA expression of HIF1-α as a marker of hypoxic stress, Tβ-4 to evaluate immunosuppression, and CvPPAR-δ to assess its expression after TBT exposure. Physiological parameters, including hemocyte counts, clearance rates, and oxygen consumption rates, were measured to evaluate how these stressors impact important life sustaining functions. Exposure to a natural hypoxic event for nine days up-regulated mRNA expression of HIF1-α and Tβ-4, while CvPPAR-δ was significantly down-regulated and no effects on physiological parameters were observed. In the lab, oysters exposed to both hypoxia alone and hypoxia+TBT shosignificant up-regulation of HIF1- α and down-regulation of Tβ-4 mRNA expression on days 8 and 12, however, physiological functions were relatively unaffected. CvPPAR-δ mRNA expression was down-regulated under exposure to TBT, hypoxia, and the combined treatments, indicating that this nuclear receptor pathway is responsive to these stressors. Findings from the study indicate potential for immunosuppression as a result of combined stressors, which could increase oyster vulnerability to pathogens. Additionally, a field study was performed during April-September 2019 to assess the effects of an extremely low salinity event due to dual openings of the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) on oyster mortality. Two months following the second closing of the BCS, oyster mortality was 100% at five oyster reefs in the Mississippi Sound
Taboos as Mechanics of Environmental Stewardship in Son of the Thundercloud by Easterine Kire
Nagaland is one of the North eastern states, which is known for its profound variety of ecological resources. Through the novels of Easterine Kire, one can get an authentic insight of traditional beliefs and practices of Nagaland. Folklore is one of the best facets of representing culture of the region. The collective wisdom of native tribes is brought through eco-spirituality. Unlinear narrative is prominent in the works of folklore. Kire makes the best use of unlinear narrative to inculcate eco-awareness among the younger generation. In the name of industrialization, people exploit nature for personal gratification which hinders the balance which exists in the natural world. Easterine Kire through folklore warns the younger generation from destroying the pristine nature of Naga hills through the protuberant characters which exist in her fictional world. This paper attempts to bring out the importance of folklore in propagating eco-awareness among the younger generation. It also emphasizes the importance of folklore in propagating culture of Angami tribe

Hollow-Core Optical Fibre Technology: The Future Solution for Loss Reduction and High-Speed Data Transmission
Hollow-core fibre (HCF) is the latest generation of optical fibre, featuring a hollow core structure that allows light to propagate through air or vacuum rather than through a glass core, as in conventional optical fibres. Utilising the principle of photonic bandgap or antiresonant guiding, HCF minimises attenuation and dispersion, making it ideal for high-speed, long-distance data transmission applications. This article discusses the physical and optical characteristics of HCF, advancements in fabrication processes, and its practical implementation in the field of optical communication. The study indicates that HCF has significant potential to replace conventional optical fibres in the future, particularly in backbone networks and latency-sensitive applications
