One of the new features introduced with the publication of the Book no. 12 of the Geological Survey of Italy – Department of Soil – ISPRA is the systematization and the completion of the symbols to be used in the description of the geological information of several sheets of the Geological Map of Italy at 1:50,000 scale with the presence of marine areas. Experimental elements of marine geology are already present from the first maps published in the “CARG Project” (No. 541 Jerzu, n. 549 Muravera of 2001 n. 240/241 Forlì-Cervia and Rimini 256 in 2005) and in the Geological Map of the Italian Seas scale of 1:250,000. The “Book no. 12” systematizes the representation of geological information below sea level. For a description of the “submerged deposits” shall be inserted 36 symbols, and 58 (points, lines and areas) for use in submerged areas. Two issues are addressed for the preparation of maps: readability of the coastline and the mitigation of chromatic tones for geology submerged. Is presented synthetically experience on geological sheet no. 413 Borgo Grappa/Pontine islands

Essa è effettuata su aree caratterizzate da differenti situazioni geologiche ed idrogeologiche. Sono presentati alcuni risultati cartografici ritenuti significativi ottenuti con l’ausilio di GIS. Lo scopo è quello di mantenere elevata la qualità cartografica attesa da un Organo Cartografico di Stato legge 2/2/60 n. 68.We present the experimentation realized by the Cartographic Sector of the Geologic Survey of Italy on the application of the “Hydrogeological Map with a scale of 1 : 50 000” guidelines (Quaderno n. 5 del 1995). The experimentation was conducted on areas with different geological and hydrological situations. Some significant cartographic outcomes are displayed obtained with the support of GIS. The goal is to keep a high cartographic quality which is supposed to be achieved by the National Cartographic body – Law n. 68, February 2, 1960

The on-ground calibration of the flight model of the HPGSPC onboard the SAX satellite: Calibration set-up and preliminary results

The High Pressure Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter (HPGSPC) is one of the Narrow Field Instruments of the Italian-Dutch X-ray astronomy satellite SAX. Sensitive in the hard X-ray band (4–120 keV), with a very good energy resolution, the HPGSPC is well suited for studying in detail the cyclotron features present in the hard X-ray spectrum of some celestial sources. The scientific calibration of the flight model of the HPGSPC took place at the LABEN premises(Vimodrone-Milano) during October and November 1994. In this paper we briefly describe the on-ground instrument calibration system and we report some preliminary results that show the performances of both single/double event and position reconstruction/energy correction onboard processing. Preliminary results concerning the energy resolution and energy linearity are reported too

Sources of financial fragility: The role of debt management.

The main aim of this thesis is to investigate from both a theoretical and empirical point of view how debt management may affect the choice of the monetary and exchange rate regimes and ultimately influence the stability of financial systems. The thesis is organised as follows. In Chapter 1, we develop a simple theoretical model to analyse how the choice of the maturity and denomination of public debt instruments affects the choice of the optimal monetary target. We then compare debt management to alternative institutional mechanism designs and find that delegation of monetary policy to an independent central banker is a better solution to inflationary temptations than the issuance of foreign or indexed debt. Chapter 2 extends the analysis and shows that foreign currency debt may reduce the probability of a collapse of a fixed exchange rate regime. However, conditional on a currency crisis, countries with larger shares of foreign currency debt tend to experience sharper devaluations. Econometric results referring to the countries adhering to the Exchange Rate Mechanism of the European Monetary System from 1979 to 1995 confirm these theoretical findings. In the second part of the thesis we look at the sources of financial vulnerability in a sample of emerging and developing countries from 1970 to 1997. In Chapter 3, we test the role of debt and exchange rate fragility in determining episodes of banking crises, while Chapter 4 extends the analysis of the causal link between currency and banking crises to episodes of twin crises. The results indicate that along with the increasing liberalisation and globalisation of the financial markets, banking and currency crises have become closely intertwined and driven by common fundamentals. Finally, Chapter 5 contains a description of the econometric specifications and simulation-based estimation techniques adopted in the second part of the thesis

Inequality, Fiscal Capacity and the Political Regime: Lessons from the Post-Communist Transition

Using panel data for twenty-seven post-communist economies between 1987-2003, we examine the nexus of relationships between inequality, fiscal capacity (defined as the ability to raise taxes efficiently) and the political regime. Investigating the impact of political reform we find that full political freedom is associated with lower levels of income inequality. Under more oligarchic (authoritarian) regimes, the level of inequality is conditioned by the state’s fiscal capacity. Specifically, oligarchic regimes with more developed fiscal systems are able to defend the prevailing vested interests at a lower cost in terms of social injustice. This empirical finding is consistent with the model developed by Acemoglu (2006). We also find that transition countries undertaking early macroeconomic stabilisation now enjoy lower levels of inequality; we confirm that education fosters equality and the suggestion of Commander et al (1999) that larger countries are prone to higher levels of inequality.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/57211/1/wp831 .pd

Potassium partitioning between leaves and clusters: Role of rootstock

    Get PDF
Different scion/rootstock combinations in grapevine (Vitis vinifera/Vitis spp.) were tested for nutritional properties and juice composition. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon each grafted on 22 rootstock varieties (10 new crosses and 12 already used in viticulture) were grown in outdoor pots containing very poor nutritional substrate. Crop load had a strong effect on juice composition and potassium nutrition. Results indicate that under our experimental conditions rootstock can have an effect on potassium partitioning between leaves and cluster 9 out of 22 rootstocks that we tried were able to improve leaf potassium content without inducing a significant increase in juice potassium conten

Privatization and State Capacity in Postcommunist Society

Economists have used cross-national regression analysis to argue that postcommunist economic failure is the result of inadequate adherence liberal economic policies. Sociologists have relied on case study data to show that postcommunist economic failure is the outcome of too close adherence to liberal policy recommendations, which has led to an erosion of state effectiveness, and thus produced poor economic performance. The present paper advances a version of this statist theory based on a quantitative analysis of mass privatization programs in the postcommunist world. We argue that rapid large-scale privatization creates severe supply and demand shocks for enterprises, thereby inducing firm failure. The resulting erosion of tax revenues leads to a fiscal crisis for the state, and severely weakens its capacity and bureaucratic character. This, in turn, reacts back on the enterprise sector, as the state can no longer support the institutions necessary for the effective functioning of a modern economy, thus resulting in deindustrialization. Using cross-national regression techniques we find that the implementation of mass privatization programs negatively impacts measures of economic growth, state capacity and the security of property rights.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40192/3/wp806.pd

Allied Health Faculty Members’ Perspective on Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
A framework for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO, 2010) in response to the need to address the complicated conditions that exist in today’s health systems. Much of the focus of today’s health service delivery is predicated on the social determinants of health (Barzansky et al., 2019), which refer to the environmental conditions associated with where people are born, live, go to school, work, play, age, and worship that have an impact on health, function, quality of life, and risks (Healthy People 2030, n.d.). IPCP is thought to be the only approach effective enough to address these complicated systems associated with health (Bosch & Mansell, 2015). This co-authored dissertation explores what may impact the development of IPCP skills in allied health professionals. This study focused on the lived experiences associated with IPCP of four allied health providers at three points along their professional paths. Those points were as students, clinicians, and faculty members. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach included the use of semi-structured interviews to gather information associated with IPCP at these three points. The overall results indicate that IPCP education, exposure, and application vary among the participants. Two of the four participants appear to have had more experience with IPCP, which has implications for patient and client interventions and professional education programs in allied health. Future research is indicated to further examine implications from this study
