Exploring Communities in Large Profiled Graphs
Given a graph and a vertex , the community search (CS) problem
aims to efficiently find a subgraph of whose vertices are closely related
to . Communities are prevalent in social and biological networks, and can be
used in product advertisement and social event recommendation. In this paper,
we study profiled community search (PCS), where CS is performed on a profiled
graph. This is a graph in which each vertex has labels arranged in a
hierarchical manner. Extensive experiments show that PCS can identify
communities with themes that are common to their vertices, and is more
effective than existing CS approaches. As a naive solution for PCS is highly
expensive, we have also developed a tree index, which facilitate efficient and
online solutions for PCS
Merging Static and Dynamic Depth Cues with Optical-Flow Recovery for Creating Stereo Videos
A method for estimating the depth information of a general monocular image sequence and then creating a 3D stereo video is proposed. Distinguishing between foreground and background is possible without additional information, and then foreground pixels are moved to create the binocular image. The proposed depth estimation method is based on coarse-to-fine strategy. By applying the CID method in the spatial domain, the sharpness and the contrast of an image can be improved by the distance of the region based on its color. Then a coarse depth map of the image can be generated. An optical-flow method based on temporal information is then used to search and compare the block motion status between previous and current frames, and then the distance of the block can be estimated according to the amount of block motion. Finally, the static and motion depth information is integrated to create the fine depth map. By shifting foreground pixels based on the depth information, a binocular image pair can be created. A sense of 3D stereo can be obtained without glasses by an autostereoscopic 3D display.</jats:p
Insights into Chinese perspectives on do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders from an examination of DNR order form completeness for cancer patients
PURPOSE: Discussing end-of-life care with patients is often considered taboo, and signing a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is difficult for most patients, especially in Chinese culture. This study investigated distributions and details related to the signing of DNR orders, as well as the completeness of various DNR order forms. METHODS: Retrospective chart reviews were performed. We screened all charts from a teaching hospital in Taiwan for patients who died of cancer during the period from January 2010 to December 2011. A total of 829 patient records were included in the analysis. The details of the DNR order forms were recorded. RESULTS: The DNR order signing rate was 99.8 %. The percentage of DNR orders signed by patients themselves (DNR-P) was 22.6 %, while the percentage of orders signed by surrogates (DNR-S) was 77.2 %. The percentage of signed DNR forms that were completely filled out was 78.4 %. The percentage of DNR-S forms that were completed was 81.7 %, while the percentage of DNR-P forms that were completely filled out was only 67.6 %. CONCLUSION: Almost all the cancer patients had a signed DNR order, but for the majority of them, the order was signed by a surrogate. Negative attitudes of discussing death from medical professionals and/or the family members of patients may account for the higher number of signed DNR-S orders than DNR-P orders. Moreover, early obtainment of signed DNR orders should be sought, as getting the orders earlier could promote the quality of end-of-life care, especially in non-oncology wards
Complete genome sequence of Meiothermus silvanus type strain (VI-R2).
Meiothermus silvanus (Tenreiro et al. 1995) Nobre et al. 1996 belongs to a thermophilic genus whose members share relatively low degrees of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Meiothermus constitutes an evolutionary lineage separate from members of the genus Thermus, from which they can generally be distinguished by their slightly lower temperature optima. M. silvanus is of special interest as it causes colored biofilms in the paper making industry and may thus be of economic importance as a biofouler. This is the second completed genome sequence of a member of the genus Meiothermus and only the third genome sequence to be published from a member of the family Thermaceae. The 3,721,669 bp long genome with its 3,667 protein-coding and 55 RNA genes is a part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project
