L’activitat física regular redueix el risc de mort prematura, a causa del fet que aquesta millora els factors de risc de les malalties cròniques degeneratives típiques del món civilitzat, i en retarda o n’impedeix l’aparició. En aquest article ens volem estendre en la comprensió d’aquesta relació i volem explicar per què l’activitat física ens produeix tants beneficis, i per què l’activitat física actua favorablement sobre els factors de risc de tantes malalties. Trobem que això s’esdevé a causa del fet que  valors adequats d’activitat física habitual produeixen una amalgama entre el nostre estil de vida actual i el natural de la nostra espècie, per al qual va ser seleccionat el nostre genoma a través del procés d’evolució

La actividad física regular reduce el riesgo de muerte prematura debido a que ésta mejora los factores de riesgo de las enfermedades crónicas degenerativas típicas del mundo civilizado, retrasando o impidiendo su aparición. En este artículo queremos exten­dernos en el entendimiento de esta relación y explicar por qué la actividad física nos produce tantos beneficios, y por qué la actividad física actúa favorablemente sobre los factores de riesgo de tantas enfermedades. Encontramos que esto sucede, debido a que valores adecuados de actividad física habitual producen un amalgamiento entre nuestro estilo de vida actual y el natural de nuestra especie, para el que nuestro genoma fue seleccionado a través del proceso de evolución

Surface Immobilized His-tagged Azurin as a Model Interface for the Investigation of Vectorial Electron Transfer in Biological Systems

A model system for the electrochemical investigation of vectorial electron transfer in biological systems was designed, assembled and characterized. Gold electrodes, functionalized with a -OCH3 terminated, aromatic self-assembled monolayer, were used as a substrate for the adsorption of variants of copper- containing, redox metalloprotein azurin. The engineered azurin bears a polyhistidine tag at its C-terminus. Thanks to the presence of the solvent exposed tag, which chelates Cu2+ ions in solution, we introduced an exogenous redox centre. The different reduction potentials of the two redox centres and their positioning with respect to the surface are such that electron transfer from the exogenous copper centre and the electrode is mediated by the native azurin active site, closely paralleling electron transfer processes in naturally occurring multicentre metalloprotein

Measuring and structuring the spatial coherence length of organic light-emitting diodes

IDWS and KD also acknowledge Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit awards.The spatial coherence of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is an important parameter that has gained little attention to date. Here we present a method for making quantitative measurements of the spatial coherence of OLEDs using a Young’s double-slit experiment. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated by making measurements on a range of OLEDs with different emitters (iridium and europium complexes) and architectures (bottom- and top-emitting) and the fringe visibility is further manipulated by gratings embedded in external diffractive optical elements. Based on the experiments and simulation of the results, we quantitatively determine the spatial coherence lengths of several OLEDs and find them to be a few micrometers. A 60% increase in the spatial coherence length was observed when using a narrow bandwidth emitter and a metal-coated grating.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

La metodología de los sistemas complejos de Rolando García aplicada a la investigación en actividad física y salud

La insuficiente actividad física de la población es un problema de salud pública creciente. Su solución excede al campo de la salud llegándose a sugerir un enfoque interdisciplinario para su investigación. En este trabajo nos proponemos estudiar si es posible investigar la conducta en actividad física con fines de salud aplicando la metodología y la epistemología de los sistemas complejos propuestas por Rolando García.Se hará un repaso histórico del proceso de investigación en actividad física y salud y a continuación se discutirá la pertinencia de un abordaje sistémico en general y de la propuesta de Rolando García en particular.Llegamos a la conclusión que la actividad física para la salud es un objeto abordable mediante la metodología y la epistemología propuestas por García. Esto es así debido a que reúne las características necesarias para una investigación sistémica e interdisciplinaria, estas son: los componentes y niveles son identificables; el sistema cuenta con una historia de transformaciones y reestructuraciones; existe investigación disciplinaria y especialistas en cada área involucrada; hay urgencia por parte de agentes gubernamentales y distintas instituciones por resolver el problema.El desafío será entonces construir un equipo de trabajo preparado y con objetivos y marcos epistemológicos similares. La universidad podría ser un espacio propicio para formar un equipo de investigación interdisciplinario de estas características

THE QUESTION OF RATIONALITY OF AFRICAN PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITION AND THE CHALLENGE OF COMPARATIVE DISCOURSE

During comparative discourse, some scholars have ridiculed African indigenous concepts, phenomena, beliefs, and worldview in a forceful attempt to allow it to fit into western framework and to avoid the charge of irrationality. It is against this background this essay attempt to establish the basis for the rationality of discourse within the African philosophical tradition and set a basis for any form of comparative discourse with other philosophical traditions. My goal is not simply to argue for the inclusion of our philosophical tradition, but to prevent its distortion or the imposition of any sort of inferiority of thought on African minds. I posit that non-African epistemological framework nor should yardstick for rationality not be used as the measure for discerning the reasonableness of African philosophical reflections. My discussion on African understanding of reality and human being dwelt on the ontological reflection of Emmanuel Osigwe Anyiam Osigwe and Anthony O. Echekwube. I posit that there is only one reality but various forms of rationality. Since there are multiplicity of interpretation of reality based on one’s location within the cosmos, African interpretation of reality must not be dismissed or judged using framework from other society. I conclude that comparative discourse is possible and could merit from African worldview and value system
