Low-mass e+e- pair production in 158 A GeV Pb-Au collisions at the CERN SPS, its dependence on multiplicity and transverse momentum
We report a measurement of low-mass electron pairs observed in 158
GeV/nucleon Pb-Au collisions. The pair yield integrated over the range of
invariant masses 0.2 < m < 2.0 GeV is enhanced by a factor of 3.5 +/- 0.4
(stat) +/- 0.9 (syst) over the expectation from neutral meson decays. As
observed previously in S-Au collisions, the enhancement is most pronounced in
the invariant-mass region 300-700 MeV. For Pb-Au we find evidence for a strong
increase of the enhancement with centrality. In addition, we show that the
enhancement covers a wide range in transverse momentum, but is largest at the
lowest observed pt.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
Recent results from Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon obtained with the CERES spectrometer
During the 1996 lead run time, CERES has accumulated 42 million events,
corresponding to a factor of 5 more statistics than in 1995 and 2.5 million
events of a special photon-run. We report on the results of the low-mass
ee-pair analysis. Since the most critical item is the poor
signal-to-background ratio we also discuss the understanding of this
background, in absolute terms, with the help of a detailed Monte Carlo
simulation. We show preliminary results of the photon analysis and summarize

e+e--pair production in Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present the combined results on electron-pair production in 158 GeV/n
{Pb-Au} (= 17.2 GeV) collisions taken at the CERN SPS in 1995 and
1996, and give a detailed account of the data analysis. The enhancement over
the reference of neutral meson decays amounts to a factor of 2.31 for semi-central collisions (28%
) when yields are integrated over 200 MeV/ in
invariant mass. The measured yield, its stronger-than-linear scaling with
, and the dominance of low pair strongly suggest an
interpretation as {\it thermal radiation} from pion annihilation in the
hadronic fireball. The shape of the excess centring at 500
MeV/, however, cannot be described without strong medium modifications of
the meson. The results are put into perspective by comparison to
predictions from Brown-Rho scaling governed by chiral symmetry restoration, and
from the spectral-function many-body treatment in which the approach to the

A doublet of 3" cylindrical silicon drift detectors in the CERES/NA45 experiment
We report on the performance of a doublet of 3" cylindrical silicon drift detectors installed as an upgrade of the CERES/NA45 electron pair spectrometer for the Pb-beam at the CERN SPS. The silicon detectors provide external particle tracking and background rejection of conversions and close Dalitz pairs. Search for direct photons from S - Au collisions at 200 GeV/u
The CERES experiment has measured inclusive photon production in S-Au collisions of 200 GeV/nucleon at the CERN SPS. No evidence for direct emission of photons was found. For the kinematic region 2.1 < y <y2.65 and 0.4 GeV/c < p^ < 2.0p20 GeV/c the yield and p^p-dependence of the observed photons are well reproduced by hadron decays. Furthermore, their production rate is found to be proportional to the charged particle density. The systematic errors comparing the measured and expected photon yield result in an upper limit of 14% for the emission of direct photons in central S-Au collisions. For a photon source with a yield depending quadratically on the charged particle density the limit can be reduced to 7%
Low mass dilepton production at the SPS: probing hot and dense nuclear matter
CERES and HELIOS-3 have detected a significant enhancement of low--mass dileptons in nuclear collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon with respect to the expected ``conventional'' sources. The onset of the excess, starting at a mass of , and the possibility of a quadratic dependence on the event multiplicity suggest the opening of the annihilation channel. This would be the first observation of thermal radiation from dense hadronic matter. Possible interpretations of these results are presented, including the reduction of the mass due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry in the dense fireball formed in the collision
Impact of degeneration and material pairings on cartilage friction: Cartilage versus glass
The association of knee joint osteoarthritis and altered frictional properties of the degenerated cartilage remains ambiguous, because previous in vitro studies did not consider the characteristic loads and velocities during gait. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the friction behavior of degenerated human cartilage under characteristic stance and swing phase conditions. A dynamic pin-on-plate tribometer was used to test the tribological systems of cartilage against cartilage and cartilage against glass, both with synthetic synovial fluid as lubricant. Using the International Cartilage Repair Society classification, the cartilage samples were assigned to a mildly or a severely degenerated group before testing. Friction coefficients were calculated under stance and swing phase conditions at the beginning of the test and after 600 s of testing. The most important finding of this study is that cartilage against glass couplings displayed significantly higher friction for the severely degenerated samples compared to the mildly degenerated ones, whereas cartilage against cartilage couplings only indicated slight tendencies under the observed test conditions. Consequently, care should be taken when transferring in vitro findings from cartilage against cartilage couplings to predict the friction behavior in vivo. Therefore, we recommend in vitro tribological testing methods which account for gait-like loading conditions and to replicate physiological material pairings, particularly in preclinical medical device validation studies
D-lactate is a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection
IntroductionReliable biomarkers for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are of paramount clinical value. To date, synovial fluid leukocyte count is the standard surrogate parameter indicating PJI. As D-lactate is almost solely produced by bacteria, it represents a promising molecule in the diagnostic workflow of PJI evaluation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the performance of synovial fluid D-lactate for diagnosing PJI of the hip and knee.Materials and MethodsThese are preliminary results of a prospective multicenter study from one academic center. Seventy-two consecutive patients after total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were prospectively included. All patients received a joint aspiration in order to rule out or confirm PJI, which was diagnosed according to previously published institutional criteria. Synovial fluid D-lactate was determined spectrophotometrically at 450 nm. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to assess the diagnostic performance.ResultsEighteen patients (25%) were diagnosed with PJI and 54 patients (75%) were classified as aseptic. Synovial fluid D-lactate showed a sensitivity of 90.7% (95% CI: 79.7%–96.9%) and specificity of 83.3% (95% CI: 58.6%–96.4%) at a cut-off of 0.04 mmol/L. The median concentration of D-lactate was significantly higher in patients with PJI than in those with aseptic conditions (0.048 mmol/L, range, 0.026–0.076 mmol/L vs. 0.024 mmol/L, range, 0.003–0.058 mmol/L, p < 0.0001). The predominat microogranisms were staphylococci, followed by streptococci and gram-negative bacteria.ConclusionD-lactate bears a strong potential to act as a valuable biomarker for diagnosing PJI of the hip and knee. In our study, a cutoff of 0.04 mmol/L showed a comparable sensitivity to synovial fluid leukocyte count. However, its specificity was higher compared to conventional diagnostic tools. The additional advantages of D-lactate testing are requirement of low synovial fluid volume, short turnaround time and low cost
Being in a Seclusion Room: The Forensic Psychiatric Inpatients' Perspective
INTRODUCTION: Contemporary qualitative research has explored service users' experience of seclusion and have found it to be a highly distressing and potentially traumatising experience for service users. The majority of the existing literature has researched seclusion within the context of other restrictive practices, resulting in findings that can only be considered an overview of the experience. The studies also rarely access participants with histories of considerable violence and imprisonment. QUESTION: What are forensic psychiatric inpatients' experience of being in a seclusion room? METHOD: Seven inpatients in a medium secure hospital were interviewed and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse the data. RESULTS: Four superordinate themes were identified; 'intense fear', 'not getting the care I needed', 'I am being abused' and 'power struggle'. DISCUSSION: While participants were in the seclusion room they experienced extreme fear. Staff interaction played a considerable role in shaping the participants' experience. Staff actions were interpreted as neglectful and abusive. Participants experienced struggling for power with staff, seeking out power when left in a powerless position. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: These findings suggested that a carefully tailored therapeutic interaction is required during seclusion in order to safeguard the mental health of forensic inpatients
