    A robust method for measurement of fluctuation parallel wavenumber in laboratory plasmas

    Measuring the parallel wavenumber is fundamental for the experimental characterization of electrostatic instabilities. It becomes particularly important in toroidal geometry, where spatial inhomogeneities and curvature can excite both drift instabilities, whose wavenumber parallel to the magnetic field is finite, and interchange instabilities, which typically have vanishing parallel wavenumber. We demonstrate that multipoint measurements can provide a robust method for the discrimination between the two cases

    Se presenta una modificación de la técnica complejométrica utilizada para la determinación de secantes en forma directa en un medio no acuoso. Se emplea una mezcla de benceno-isopropanol-metil glicol en la relación 1/60/50. Se titula por retorno, usando soluciones de EDTA y cloruro de cinc, empleando negro de Eriocromo T como indicador y una solución reguladora de cloruro de amonio y amoníaco. El método es aplicado a la determinación de hierro, cobre, cobalto, cinc, manganeso, plomo, bario y calcio.A modification of the technique used for the complexometric determination of driers, for being used in non aqueous solutions is presented. The solvent used is a mixture of 1 part of bencene, 60 parts of isopropanol and 30 parts of methyl glicol.The back titration performed using EDTA solution, zinc chloride solution, Eriochrome black T as indicator, and a buffer solution of amonium hidroxide and amonium chloride. This method may be applied to the determination of iron, copper, cobalt, zinc, manganese, lead, barium and calcium

    Scanning gate microscopy of current-annealed single layer graphene

    We have used scanning gate microscopy to explore the local conductivity of a current-annealed graphene flake. A map of the local neutrality point (NP) after annealing at low current density exhibits micron-sized inhomogeneities. Broadening of the local e-h transition is also correlated with the inhomogeneity of the NP. Annealing at higher current density reduces the NP inhomogeneity, but we still observe some asymmetry in the e-h conduction. We attribute this to a hole doped domain close to one of the metal contacts combined with underlying striations in the local NP.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Raman Spectroscopy of Graphene Edges

    Graphene edges are of particular interest since their orientation determines the electronic properties. Here we present a detailed Raman investigation of graphene flakes with edges oriented at different crystallographic directions. We also develop a real space theory for Raman scattering to analyze the general case of disordered edges. The position, width, and intensity of G and D peaks are studied as a function of the incident light polarization. The D-band is strongest for polarization parallel to the edge and minimum for perpendicular. Raman mapping shows that the D peak is localized in proximity of the edge. For ideal edges, the D peak is zero for zigzag orientation and large for armchair, allowing in principle the use of Raman spectroscopy as a sensitive tool for edge orientation. However, for real samples, the D to G ratio does not always show a significant dependence on edge orientation. Thus, even though edges can appear macroscopically smooth and oriented at well-defined angles, they are not necessarily microscopically ordered

    A time-reversal-violating spin-correlation coefficient in the total cross section for polarized neutrons incident on a tensor rank-2 polarized target is calculated by assuming a time-reversal-noninvariant, parity-conserving ``five-fold" interaction in the neutron-nucleus optical potential. Results are presented for the system n+165Hon + {^{165}{\rm Ho}} for neutron incident energies covering the range 1--20 MeV. From existing experimental bounds, a strength of 2±102 \pm 10 keV is deduced for the real and imaginary parts of the five-fold term, which implies an upper bound of order 10410^{-4} on the relative TT-odd strength when compared to the central real optical potential.Comment: 11 pages (Revtex

    Can agentic messages help?: Linguistic strategies to counteract voice‐based sexual orientation discrimination

    Gay men who believe to sound ‘gay’ expect to be discriminated against because of their voices and gay-sounding men are discriminated against in the hiring process. We examined whether uttering an agency-based message decreased discrimination expectancy and enactment. In Study 1a (N = 256; gay and bisexual men) and Study 1b (N = 216; gay men), speakers uttered agentic (vs. neutral) messages. We assessed their self-perception as gay sounding, agency self-attribution and discrimination expectancy. Uttering agentic (vs. neutral) messages made the speakers self-perceive as more agentic and this decreased discrimination expectancy. Additionally, self-perception as gay sounding predicted discrimination expectancy. In Study 2 (N = 466), heterosexual participants listened to gay- and straight-sounding speakers uttering either neutral or agentic messages and rated them in terms of agency and employability. Gay-sounding speakers uttering agentic messages were less likely to be discriminated against than when uttering neutral messages.     When fluency matters: The interplay between categorization fluency and gender atypicality on gaydar judgments

    Perceiving a male speaker as gender atypical increases the chances of categorizing him as gay. The perception of how fluent the categorization process is can also play a role. Listeners categorized gay and straight speakers’ sexual orientation, reported their perceived categorization fluency, and rated speakers’ gender atypicality. When categorization fluency was high, gay speakers perceived as gender atypical were more likely categorized as gay.
