    Get PDF

Use and acceptance of voice assistants among people with aphasia in Germany

Aphasia is an acquired disorder that affects the ability to communicate. The increasing availability of voice assistants (such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant) provides new opportunities to support people with aphasia in a variety of tasks, from everyday communication to speech and language therapy exercises. To ensure accessibility and acceptance, it is important to involve people with aphasia in the development process. Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) as a theoretical framework, this study examines their willingness to use voice assistants and explores which potential applications they consider useful for participation in social and cultural contexts. These questions were addressed through a survey. Eight people with aphasia took part in the study. Although the sample size does not allow for statistical analysis, the results provide valuable insights for further research. Most of the participants showed a general interest in using voice assistants, two of them were already users. The presence of physical limitations motivates the use of speech-based technology. Participants who already used voice assistants saw them as a practical support in everyday life, while non-users had lower expectations in this respect. Social influence was found to play an important role. Participants' perceptions of privacy and data security issues varied and do not allow for generalization. Finally, some participants showed a preference for communication support applications (e.g., word finding, sentence formation, grammar support) over applications used for therapy exercises such as word training

Beyond socket options: making the Linux TCP stack truly extensible

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the most important protocols in today's Internet. Its specification and implementations have been refined for almost forty years. The Linux TCP stack is one of the most widely used TCP stacks given its utilisation on servers and Android smartphones and tablets. However, TCP and its implementations evolve very slowly. In this paper, we demonstrate how to leverage the eBPF virtual machine that is part of the recent versions of the Linux kernel to make the TCP stack easier to extend. We demonstrate a variety of use cases where the eBPF code is injected inside a running kernel to update or tune the TCP implementation. We first implement the TCP User Timeout Option. Then we propose a new option that enables a client to request a server to use a specific congestion control scheme. Our third extension is a TCP option that sets the initial congestion window. We then demonstrate how eBPF code can be used to tune the acknowledgment strategy.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Development of optimal stressor scenarios for new operational energy systems

    Get PDF
This thesis leverages a previously developed and tested simulation model for operational energy related systems in order to develop better stressor scenarios for acceptance testing. Analyzing the previous model using a design of experiments (DOE) and regression analysis provides critical information about the associated operational environment factors and their relationships that directly affected system performance. A nearly orthogonal Latin hypercube (NOLH) is used to expeditiously and effectively understand the entirety of the scenario space. This experimentation method identifies the most stressful combinations of the operational factors that can be used to test system performance. Under these maximally severe scenarios, a revised set of system requirements emerge from experimentation. The resulting system requirements can be used to revisit the design requirements and develop a more robust system. This process can be adopted by testing and acceptance agencies to further examine new technologies.http://archive.org/details/developmentofopt1094556914Lieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited
