Juxtaposing Chinese and Western Representational Principles: New Design Methods for Information Graphics in the Field of Intercultural Communication.
This article examines knowledge graphics from the Chinese and Western cultures, which, in the course of globalization, are being increasingly loosened from their original cultural references. If it is assumed that at most pictographs, but not complex graphics, are universally understandable, “visual translations” must be developed for knowledge graphics if we are to transfer them into another cultural reference system. Using the example of a widespread graphic form-the tree diagram-the research presented here will explain specific representational principles and the cultural concepts on which they are based. Here, on the visible surface, formal correlations can indeed be observed. However, if we ask what conceptual structures the graphics are based on, we encounter two fundamentally different representational systems. The article focuses on the question of which design methods are capable of making the diverse relationships between these representational systems comprehensible
On the Cultural Anchorings of Knowledge Visualization.
This article concerns knowledge graphics from Chinese culture. These graphics are linked to specific designs based on concepts anchored in their own culture and time. The major question behind our research was: What kinds of special qualities do traditional Chinese diagrams have, as regards to their cultural framework and their specific design? At the heart of the research is the conception and creative development of “visual translations.” By redesigning existing knowledge graphics, the research team was able to perceive the cultural implications of the Chinese graphics
Microplastics in freshwater systems: origin, fate and impact : a methodological research work
Microplastics are separated from environmental samples based on their electrostatic behavior. They were taken with a continuous flow centrifuge and by sediment cores. The effects of different plastics on Lumbriculus variegatus were determined and whether the plastic types dissolve poisonous additives in the water phase. The results of a sediment contact test show that PVC had a negative effect on mortality with an LC 50 of 1.7 mg/g dw. The glycogen content of the surviving worms show that only the increasing concentration of PVC causes a negative effect. Additives were leached of the plastics
Re-Imagining the Collection of the Kreis Family
Drawing on the idea of family photography as objects of knowledge and the theory of sensory in the communicative power of photographs, this article explores how the Kreis Family Collection (1850–1980) can be presented visually and acoustically on an archival platform and how it generates new knowledge in this process. Our central result is a virtual image-sound installation that allows the same photographs to be re-imagined in three contrasting acoustic ‘moods’, based on the argument that family photography’s ‘show and tell’ is an open-ended performance, in which the user of an archival platform is asked to participate
Researching Visual Application Respectful of Cultural Diversity.
The general intention of this paper is to provide insight into a problematic area, that of visual application respectful of cultural diversity, and to demonstrate the relevance of graphic design research in a societal environment. The paper presents methods and results from two completed research projects in the field of intercultural visual communication. The key findings of Research Project 1 are methods of multilingual typography communicated by type specimens and text samples, annotations on books, visual examples from Chinese designers and texts. The most important results of Research Project 2 are visually communicated by 120 newly drawn infographics. In addition, a new research plan will be discussed, namely the development of visual identities for public institutions that implement cultural and social diversity policies. The proposed design methods in all three projects respond to the complexity of changing social requirements and forms of communication. They have been developed through visual applications of design that focus on the approach called “research through design.” The fundamental research goal is to practice sovereign interaction, also with visual differences, and thus counters the tendency of globalization and commercialization to equalize differences
Iron(II) complexes of 4-sulfanyl-, 4-sulfinyl- and 4-sulfonyl-2,6-dipyrazolylpyridine ligands. A subtle interplay between spin-crossover and crystallographic phase changes.
Oxidation of 4-(methylsulfanyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (LSMe) with hydrogen peroxide or mCPBA yields 4-(methylsulfinyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (LSOMe) and 4-(methylsulfonyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-pyridine (LSO2Me), respectively. Solid [Fe(LSMe)2][ClO4]2 (1[ClO4]2) is high-spin at room temperature, and exhibits an abrupt spin-transition at T1/2 = 256 K. A shoulder on the cooling side of the χMT vs. T curve is associated with a hysteretic crystallographic phase change, occurring around T↓ = 245 K and T↑ = 258 K. The phase change involves a 180° rotation of around half the methylsulfanyl substituents in the crystal. This contrasts with the previously reported BF4 − salt of the same compound, which is isostructural to 1[ClO4]2 at room temperature but transforms to a different crystal phase in its low-spin state. Solid [Fe(LSOMe)2][BF4]2 (2[BF4]2) and [Fe(LSO2Me)2][BF4]2 (3[BF4]2) both exhibit gradual spin-crossover equilibria centred significantly above room temperature. Solution measurements show that the oxidised sulphur centers in 2[BF4]2 and 3[BF4]2 stabilise the low spin states of those complexes
