A Novel Gesture-based CAPTCHA Design for Smart Devices
CAPTCHAs have been widely used in Web applications to prevent service abuse. With the evolution of computing environment from desktop computing to ubiquitous computing, more and more users are accessing Web applications on smart devices where touch based interactions are dominant. However, the majority of CAPTCHAs are designed for use on computers and laptops which do not reflect the shift of interaction style very well. In this paper, we propose a novel CAPTCHA design to utilise the convenience of touch interface while retaining the needed security. This is achieved through using a hybrid challenge to take advantages of human’s cognitive abilities. A prototype is also developed and found to be more user friendly than conventional CAPTCHAs in the preliminary user acceptance test

Scenarios of energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction potential in the buildings sector in China to year 2050
As China’s rapid urbanization continues and urban dwellers become more affluent, energy use in buildings is expected to grow. To understand how this growth can be slowed, we explore four scenarios for Chinese buildings, ranging from a high-energy-demand scenario with no new energy policies to lowest energy demand under a techno-economic-potential scenario that assumes full deployment of cost-effective efficient and renewable technologies by 2050. We show that, in the high energy demand scenario, building energy demand has an average annual growth rate of about 2.8%, with slower growth rates in the other three scenarios. In all scenarios, CO2 emissions grow slower than energy, with building CO2 peaking around 2045 in the high energy demand scenario, and as early as 2030 in the techno-economic-potential scenario. We show that although various technological solutions, systems and practices can be very effective in minimizing building energy use, rigorous policies are needed to overcome multiple implementation barriers

Energy and CO2 implications of decarbonization strategies for China beyond efficiency: Modeling 2050 maximum renewable resources and accelerated electrification impacts
Energy efficiency has played an important role in helping China achieve its domestic and international energy and climate change mitigation targets, but more significant near-term actions to decarbonize are needed to help China and the world meet the Paris Agreement goals. Accelerating electrification and maximizing supply-side and demand-side renewable adoption are two recent strategies being considered in China, but few bottom-up modeling studies have evaluated the potential near-term impacts of these strategies across multiple sectors. To fill this research gap, we use a bottom-up national end-use model that integrates energy supply and demand systems and conduct scenario analysis to evaluate even lower CO2 emissions strategies and subsequent pathways for China to go beyond cost-effective efficiency and fuel switching. We find that maximizing non-conventional electric and renewable technologies can help China peak its national CO2 emissions as early as 2025, with significant additional CO2 emission reductions on the order of 7 Gt CO2 annually by 2050. Beyond potential CO2 reductions from power sector decarbonization, significant potential lies in fossil fuel displaced by renewable heat in industry. These results suggest accelerating the utilization of non-conventional electric and renewable technologies present additional CO2 reduction opportunities for China, but new policies and strategies are needed to change technology choices in the demand sectors. Managing the pace of electrification in tandem with the pace of decarbonization of the power sector will also be crucial to achieving CO2 reductions from the power sector in a scenario of increased electrification

Testing the uniqueness of the open bosonic string field theory vacuum
The operators K_n are generators of reparameterization symmetries of Witten's cubic open string field theory. One pertinent question is whether they can be utilised to generate deformations of the tachyon vacuum and thereby violate its uniqueness. We use level truncation to show that these transformations on the vacuum are in fact pure gauge transformations to a very high accuracy, thus giving new evidence for the uniqueness of the perturbatively stable vacuum. Equivalently, this result implies the vanishing of some discrete cohomology classes of the BRST operator in the stable vacuum
Black Hole Entropy and Viscosity Bound in Horndeski Gravity
Horndeski gravities are theories of gravity coupled to a scalar field, in
which the action contains an additional non-minimal quadratic coupling of the
scalar, through its first derivative, to the Einstein tensor or the analogous
higher-derivative tensors coming from the variation of Gauss-Bonnet or Lovelock
terms. In this paper we study the thermodynamics of the static black hole
solutions in dimensions, in the simplest case of a Horndeski coupling to
the Einstein tensor. We apply the Wald formalism to calculate the entropy of
the black holes, and show that there is an additional contribution over and
above those that come from the standard Wald entropy formula. The extra
contribution can be attributed to unusual features in the behaviour of the
scalar field. We also show that a conventional regularisation to calculate the
Euclidean action leads to an expression for the entropy that disagrees with the
Wald results. This seems likely to be due to ambiguities in the subtraction
procedure. We also calculate the viscosity in the dual CFT, and show that the
viscosity/entropy ratio can violate the bound for
appropriate choices of the parameters.Comment: 30 pages, no figure, minor revision
Minimal Supergravity with m_0^2 < 0
We extend the parameter space of minimal supergravity to negative values of
m_0^2, the universal scalar mass parameter defined at the grand unified scale.
After evolving to the weak scale, all scalars can be non-tachyonic with masses
consistent with collider constraints. This region of parameter space is
typically considered excluded by searches for charged dark matter, since the
lightest standard model superpartner is a charged slepton. However, if the
gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, the charged slepton decays,
and this region is allowed. This region provides qualitatively new
possibilities for minimal supergravity, including spectra with light sleptons
and very heavy squarks, and models in which the lightest slepton is the
selectron. We show that the m_0^2 < 0 region is consistent with low energy
precision data and discuss its implications for particle colliders. These
models may provide signals of supersymmetry in even the first year of operation
at the Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 16 page
