Effects of Chain Length, Saturation, and Bases on Saponification
This project will analyze the effects of chain length and saturation of fatty acids on saponification processes, as well as the effects of the base used in the reaction. Stearic acid, lauric acid, and oleic acid will be used for the fatty acid comparisons, and sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide will be used for the base comparisons. Stearic acid is considered a long chain fatty acid, while lauric acid is considered a short chain fatty acid. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid. Five soap products are be made: sodium stearate, sodium laurate, sodium oleate, potassium stearate, and potassium oleate. After the saponification and curing process, the five different soap products that result from these reactions will be analyzed to determine their appearance, hardness, pH value, and solubility in water, and foaming ability. The data collected will be compared for each soap product to determine what properties each fatty acid and base may contribute to their respective soap products, and how these soap products would be applicable in soap formulations
Prepackaged central line kits reduce procedural mistakes during central line insertion: a randomized controlled prospective trial
BACKGROUND: Central line catheter insertion is a complex procedure with a high cognitive load for novices. Providing a prepackaged all-inclusive kit is a simple measure that may reduce the cognitive load. We assessed whether the use of prepackaged all-inclusive central line insertion kits reduces procedural mistakes during central line catheter insertion by novices. METHODS: Thirty final year medical students and recently qualified physicians were randomized into two equal groups. One group used a prepackaged all-inclusive kit and the other used a standard kit containing only the central vein catheter and all other separately packaged components provided in a materials cart. The procedure was videotaped and analyzed by two blinded raters using a checklist. Both groups performed central line catheter insertion on a manikin, assisted by nursing students. RESULTS: The prepackaged kit group outperformed the standard kit group in four of the five quality indicators: procedure duration (26:26 ± 3:50 min vs. 31:27 ± 5:57 min, p = .01); major technical mistakes (3.1 ± 1.4 vs. 4.8 ± 2.6, p = .03); minor technical mistakes (5.2 ± 1.7 vs. 8.0 ± 3.2, p = .01); and correct steps (83 ± 5% vs. 75 ± 11%, p = .02). The difference for breaches of aseptic technique (1.2 ± 0.8 vs. 3.0 ± 3.6, p = .06) was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Prepackaged all-inclusive kits for novices improved the procedure quality and saved staff time resources in a controlled simulation environment. Future studies are needed to address whether central line kits also improve patient safety in hospital settings
Rogue and Deviants: A Game-Theoretic Perspective on Opportunism in Strategic Alliance Relationships
Opportunistic behavior is often studied in interfirm relationships, yet we don’t know the different types of behavior that are hidden behind the general opportunism label. Therefore, using game theory as guidance, this dissertation examines the roots of and influences on two types of opportunistic behaviors in strategic alliances. Specifically, the author suggests that the strategic alliances literature would benefit from recognizing that opportunistic behaviors don’t always originate from the firm (rogue-firm opportunism), but instead often originate from individual alliance employees (deviant-personal opportunism). Moreover, this dissertation examines how relational factors between two alliance partners impact these two types of opportunistic behaviors. The relational factors considered in this dissertation are trust, monitoring, and relative alliance identity.
Hypotheses presented in this dissertation are tested across two studies. The first study utilizes a behavioral business simulation. It combines survey data collection with objective performance data obtained from the simulation. The second study investigates the hypothesized relationships in a cross-sectional sample of strategic alliance executives. It primarily replies on survey data collection, but also introduces secondary data from SDC Platinum database
Elevating expression of MeCP2 T158M rescues DNA binding and Rett syndrome–like phenotypes
Mutations in the X-linked gene encoding methyl-CpG–binding protein 2 (MeCP2) cause Rett syndrome (RTT), a neurological disorder affecting cognitive development, respiration, and motor function. Genetic restoration of MeCP2 expression reverses RTT-like phenotypes in mice, highlighting the need to search for therapeutic approaches. Here, we have developed knockin mice recapitulating the most common RTT-associated missense mutation, MeCP2 T158M. We found that the T158M mutation impaired MECP2 binding to methylated DNA and destabilized MeCP2 protein in an age-dependent manner, leading to the development of RTT-like phenotypes in these mice. Genetic elevation of MeCP2 T158M expression ameliorated multiple RTT-like features, including motor dysfunction and breathing irregularities, in both male and female mice. These improvements were accompanied by increased binding of MeCP2 T158M to DNA. Further, we found that the ubiquitin/proteasome pathway was responsible for MeCP2 T158M degradation and that proteasome inhibition increased MeCP2 T158M levels. Together, these findings demonstrate that increasing MeCP2 T158M protein expression is sufficient to mitigate RTT-like phenotypes and support the targeting of MeCP2 T158M expression or stability as an alternative therapeutic approach
Contribution of Neurochemical Inputs to the Decrease of Motoneuron Excitability During Non-REM and REM Sleep: A Systematic Review
The sleep-related depression of excitability of upper airway motoneurons is a major neurological cause of obstructive sleep apnea whereas a disruption in the inhibition of spinal motoneurons during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep causes the REM sleep behavioral disorder. The large amount of experimental data has been obtained that deal with neurochemical mechanisms that are responsible for sleep-related depression of various motoneuron groups. However, there is a disagreement regarding the outcome of these studies primarily due to the use of different animal models and approaches, as well as due to differences in quantification and interpretation of obtained results. In this study, we sought to apply the same calculation methodology in order to uniformly quantify and compare the relative contribution of excitatory or inhibitory inputs to the decrease of excitability of different motoneuronal pools during REM and/or non-REM sleep. We analyzed only published quantitative data that were obtained by using receptor antagonists or chemogenetic approach to block receptors or silence neuronal populations. The outcomes of this analysis highlight the differences in the neurotransmitter mechanisms of sleep-related motoneuron depression between different motoneuronal pools and demonstrate the consistency of these mechanisms for hypoglossal motoneurons among various animal models
Ideological mediation in the translation of geopolitical texts: an English-Kurdish case-study
This thesis offers a critical analysis of the implications of ideological mediations in the
translation of English-Kurdish geopolitical texts. It makes an original contribution by enabling
a deeper comprehension of the role of re-contextualisation of socio-political texts in situations
of constant contemporary conflict in the Middle East. It does so by exploring the reproduction
of stance and voice in the translations of a geopolitical commentarial genre commissioned by
newspapers. The study provides an account of how patterns of translation choices are conveyed
in newspaper commentary articles on the geopolitical issues originally published in English
and then how these patterns are re-conveyed in full translations of these articles for four quality
Kurdish-language newspapers with different editorial policies: Sbeiy, Kurdistan-i-New,
Xendan, and Rudaw.
The case study explores the Kurdish translation of English journalistic articles covering
general political developments in Middle East and Kurdistan in particular over a significant
four-year period of 2011-2014. It is employed as an example of the rewriting activity that has
been effective in achieving significant geopolitical results in favour of the media agencies that
are considered politically aligned outlets. The study questions the extent to which ideologies
involved in leading translation practice and inquires what the Kurdish case-study apprises us
about wider practice. The methodology is a hybrid of corpus- and critical narrative-analytical
methods that operate within the discipline of descriptive translation studies. The study deployed
tripartite models to analyse and depict the interplay between ideology and a translator’s
behaviour within media contexts. It adapts Toury’s three-phase descriptive methodology and
Chesterman’s concept of norms as complementary models in order to describe the type of
norms operating within the context of Kurdish media translation. It also developed critical
narrative analysis for further investigating and for describing the normative effects of socio-
political factors on the behaviour of the translator within the same realm.
The outcomes of the data analysis have revealed that media translation choices are
driven by ideology. The socio-political ideology plays a significant role, both historically and
currently in the occurrence of stylistic shifts. On the level of meaning, however, the majority
of shifts occur due to the current political power dynamics in Kurdistan. The results have also
shown that media translation in Iraqi Kurdistan is not neutral and it is largely affected by the
policy of the parties to which the media news agencies are aligned. This study encompasses six
chapters, a conclusion and appendices
Rapid Convective Quench Apparatus Design
In this project, we will research, model, and simulate the heat transfer of a red-hot steel plate undergoing a rapid quenching process by high pressure water jets. Our objective is to quench the steel plate in such a way so that the steam formed from the initial water contact does not inhibit the oncoming water from making proper contact with the plate. After sufficient research has been done, we will design an apparatus which will perform the optimal quenching method and record temperature data with the goal of obtaining the heat transfer coefficient. The purpose of our project is to design and verify a method of rapid cooling that is cheaper and more efficient than other existing methods of quenching while still achieving the same material properties such as hardness
