Outcome of Combined Hepatocellular and Cholangiocarcinoma of the Liver
Background. The objective of this study was to examine the epidemiology, natural history, and prognostic factors of combined hepatocellular and cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) using population-based registry. Methods. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database (1973–2004) was used to identify cases of cHCC-CC. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated with cancer-directed surgery (CDS). The influence of CDS on cancer specific survival was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards modeling. Results. A total of 380 cases of cHCC-CC were identified, which account for approximately 0.87% of primary liver tumors. Of all patients, 69.8% of patients had regional or distant stage; 65.6% of patients had poorly or undifferentiated histology. Only 44.9% of patients with localized disease, received CDS. By logistic regression analysis, being widowed, advanced stage, and earlier diagnosis year were associated with lower rate of utilization of CDS. In multivariate analysis, tumor stage, receipt of CDS, and recent year of diagnosis were found to be significant predictors for cancer-specific survival. Conclusions. Patients with localized cHCC-CC who are selected for CDS were strongly associated with improved survival. However, many patients with localized tumors did not receive potentially curative cancer-directed surgery. Further study is warranted to address the barriers to the delivery of appropriate care to these patients

Clinical features and outcomes of 25 patients with primary adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the prostate
The aim of the present study was to examine the epidemiology, natural history, treatment and long-term survival of patients with adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the prostate. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database was used to identify ASCC of prostate cases between January 1973 and December 2006. Survival probabilities were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier methods and compared using the log-rank test. A total of 25 patients with adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the prostate were identified during the study period. The median age was 74 years (range 53-98). Twenty percent of study subjects presented with metastatic disease. Among those patients with known grade (n=16), 75% had poorly or undifferentiated histology. A total of 40% of study subjects received radical prostatectomy, while 24% of the patients had primary radiation therapy. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year cancer specific survival rates for the entire cohort were 55.2%, 37.8%, and 30.3%, respectively. For patients who underwent prostatectomy, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 78%, 78%, and 63%, respectively. For the patients who did not receive prostatectomy, the 1-year survival rates were 38.7% and none survived to three years. Adenosquamous cell carcinoma is a rare aggressive subtype of prostate cancer with poor cancer specific survival. The development of new therapeutic approaches for this aggressive tumor is urgently needed

Nano-Magnetic Immunosensor Based on Staphylococcus Protein A and the Amplification Effect of HRP-Conjugated Phage Antibody
In this research, super-paramagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (magnetic particles) were coated with Staphylococcus protein A (SPA) and coupled with polyclonal antibody (pcAb) to construct magnetic capturing probes, and HRP-conjugated phage antibody was then used as specific detecting probe to design a labeled immunosensor for trace detection of Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B (SEB). The linear detection range of the sensor was 0.008~125 µg/L, the regression equation was Y = 0.487X + 1.2 (R = 0.996, N = 15, p < 0.0001), the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.008 µg/L, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.008 µg/L. HRP-conjugated phage antibody, SPA and magnetic particles can enhance the sensitivity 4-fold, 3-fold and 2.6-fold higher, respectively. Compared with conventional double-antibody sandwich ELISA, the detection sensitivity of the sensor was 31-fold higher resulting from the integrated amplifying effect. The immunosensor integrates the unique advantages of SPA-oriented antibody as magnetic capturing probe, HRP-conjugated phage antibody as detecting probe, magnetic separation immunoassay technique, and several other advanced techniques, so it achieves high sensitivity, specificity and interference-resistance. It is proven to be well suited for analysis of trace SEB in various environmental samples with high recovery rate and reproducibility
Identification of Bna.IAA7.C05 as allelic gene for dwarf mutant generated from tissue culture in oilseed rape
AbstractBackgroundPlant height is one of the most important agronomic traits in many crops due to its influence on lodging resistance and yield performance. Although progress has been made in the use of dwarfing genes in crop improvement, identification of new dwarf germplasm is still of significant interest for breeding varieties with increased yield.ResultsHere we describe a dominant, dwarf mutant G7 ofBrassica napuswith down-curved leaves derived from tissue culture. To explore the genetic variation responsible for the dwarf phenotype, the mutant was crossed to a conventional line to develop a segregating F2population. Bulks were formed from plants with either dwarf or conventional plant height and subjected to high throughput sequencing analysis via mutation mapping (MutMap). The dwarf mutation was mapped to a 0.6 Mb interval ofB. napuschromosome C05. Candidate gene analysis revealed that one SNP causing an amino acid change in the domain II ofBna.IAA7.C05may contribute to the dwarf phenotype. This is consistent with the phenotype of a gain-of-functionindole-3-acetic acid(iaa) mutant inBna.IAA7.C05reported recently. GO and KEGG analysis of RNA-seq data revealed the down-regulation of auxin related genes, including many otherIAAandsmall up regulated response(SAUR) genes, in the dwarf mutant.ConclusionOur studies characterize a new allele ofBna.IAA7.C05responsible for the dwarf mutant generated from tissue culture. This may provide a valuable genetic resource for breeding for lodging resistance and compact plant stature inB. napus.</jats:sec
