The symposium on Social Research for Development was held on May 5-11, 1981, in Cairo, Egypt; by the Social Research Center (SRC) of The American University in Cairo (AUC). The Symposium was supported by funds from Battelle Human Affairs Research Center, Ford Foundation, International Development Re­search Center {IDRC}, and the Population Council. The theme of the Symposium was selected in respons.e to the increased con­cerns of social scientists, policymakers and funding agencies about the current status and new directions of social science research, its role in the pro­cess of social and economic development, and its contribution to policy-rele­vant issues. PRELIMINARY RESEARCH ON USING INDUSTRIAL PLANTS IN CONSTRUCTIONS

The research was based on the identification of several products from industrial plants made for the constructions sector and able to satisfy the needs of supporting the farming sector and a sustainable economy. Building friendly environmentally materials today are only possible if the products are based on renewable resources. The natural resources will help the construction industry to reduce the pollution and to be more eco-friendly. Trying to develop new materials the present paper is focus on hemp products. The first part present the raw materials used for the new composite products based on hemp and polyvinyl acetate and the second part of the paper show the results obtain for sound absorption coefficient, reaction to fire and mechanical strengths. The hemp products will have a positive impact on the environment reducing the emission of CO2 and also will help to preserve natural resources

Kinetics of the Interaction between BAL29880 and LK157 and the Class C β-Lactamase CHE-1

The chromosome-encoded class C β-lactamase CHE-1 produced by Enterobacter cloacae exhibits a lower sensitivity to avibactam than the P99 enzyme from which it is derived by a 6-residue deletion in the H-10 helix. In the present study, we investigated the sensitivity of CHE-1 to two other β-lactamase inhibitors: LK-157 (or Lek 157), a tricyclic β-lactam, and BAL29880, a bridged monobactam. With both compounds, the second-order rate constants for inactivation were significantly lower for CHE-1, which can thus be considered an inactivator-resistant mutant of P99. However, the second-order rate constant for the inactivation by BAL29880 probably remains adequate for a rather rapid reaction with CHE-1 in the absence of protection by the substrate

Representation and Postmodern Anthropology / ﺻﻮﺭﺓ ﺍﻵﺧﺮ ﻭﺃﻧﺜﺮﻭﺑﻮﻟﻮﺟﻴﺎ ﻣﺎ ﺑﻌﺪ ﺍﻟﺤﺪﺍﺛﺔ

[قدمت الباحثة إليزابيث فيرنيا أعمالاﹰ تدخل في نطاق ما يسمى أنثروبولوجيا ما بعد الحداثة قبل أن يصاغ هذا المصطلح٠ فقد عبّرت عن حضورها الشخصي في كتاباتها التي جمعت بين الأدب والإثنوغرافيا وصورت المجتمع الريفي والمديني في العراق ومصر والمغرب، وكذلك فعلت في أفلامها الأنثروبولوجية الوثائقية عن النساء الفلسطينيات والمغربيات والمصريات٠ وهي من الرائدات في مجال تقديم الآخر فقد هيأت للمستبعدين من الأضواء (النساء، اللاجئين، العمال، الفلاحين، الأصوليين) مجال الحديث عن أنفسهم في كتب مرجعية أشرفت عليها وفي أفلام سينمائية أخرجتها٠ وقد أجرت مجلة ألف هذه المقابلة معها تحريرياﹰ في خريف ٠١٩٩٦ وفيما يلي مقتطفات مترجمة من ردودها المنشورة كاملة في القسم الإنجليزي من هذا العدد: لقد أشار عالم جغرافية مرة إلى أن أي مواطن في العالم العربي لا يمكن أن يطلق على نفسه مصطلح شرق أوسطي ٠ أوسط بالنسبة لمن؟ الإمبراطورية البريطانية! شرق بالنسبة لمن؟ السويس! فعلينا دائماﹰ أن نتذكر أن هناك بعداﹰ إيديولوجياﹰ في المصطلحات و الخرائط و الدراسات الإقليمية ٠ إنني أرى أن في كل رواية جيدة عناصر إثنوغرافية: فرواية مدام بوڤاري لفلوبير تعلمنا الكثير عن الحياة في الريف الفرنسي في القرن التاسع عشر، وتزدحم رواية أوليڤر تويست لديكنز بتفاصيل الحياة اليومية في لندن الصناعية٠ لكنني أيضاﹰ أرى أن الرواية تختلف عن الإثنوغرافيا وتزيد عليها؛ فهي عمل يعتمد على الخيال ويقدم رؤية موحدة للأديب الذي أبدعها٠ كما أرى أن الدراسة الإثنوغرافية تزيد على الرواية بطريقتها الخاصة؛ فهي تحتوي على معلومات وتحليلات لا نجدها في الرواية والتي تساعد القارىء على إدراك النسق الثقافي المقدّم٠ إن تصوير الآخر مشكلة حقيقية في رأيي، إلا أن الجانب الإيجابي من طرح هذه الإشكالية هو فرضها، على السينمائيين وﺍﻟﻜﺘّﺎﺏ والأنثروبولوجيين مواجهة قضية المدروسين والإخباريين واعتبارهم عناصر متكافئة وفاعلة في المشروع التصويري٠ وأنا شخصياﹰ لا يمكنني أن أصور أحداﹰ في أفلامي دون موافقته أو موافقتها، ولكنني لا أعتقد أنه بإمكاني إعطاء من أصور الكلمة الأخيرة في طريقة تصويرهم٠ فلا بدّ أن تكون الكلمة الأخيرة للسينمائي الذي سيتحمل مسئولية الفيلم، كما أن مسئولية الشكل النهائي للرواية تقع على عاتق الروائي٠ إن بنية الأسرة في أفريقيا لم تكن أبداﹰ ثابتة، بل تجاوبت باستمرار مع ما يستجد من ظروف٠ وعلى الرغم من المحاولات التي تعرف بالحداثية للتقليل من شأن دور الأسرة وإعلاء شأن الدولة في العلاقات الإنسانية، فالأسرة ما زالت الوحدة الاجتماعية الأساسية في القارة؛ وهي المرجع الوحيد لملايين البشر الذين وجدوا ﻓﻴﻬﺎ بنية مفيدة عبر القرون٠ إن الإسرة في مأزق اليوم، وذلك لأسباب ترتبط بحركية المجتمع وبعوامل اقتصادية وتفكك النسق القديم لعلاقات القرابة في الأسرة الممتدة٠ ولكن لم يظهر ما يحل محل الأسرة، ويبدو أنها تعاود التشكل وتحاول التأقلم لظروف معيشية مختلفة اختلافاﹰ كبيراﹰ عن السابق ٠
