Why Reinvent the Wheel? The Efficacy of the Systematic Problem Solving Method 'TRIZ' and it Value for Innovation in Engineering and Implications for Engineering Management
The engineering industry needs to be more innovative. A case study of a recent breakthrough innovative development by Michelin is discussed. The influence of prior training with systematic problem solving method TRIZ, on the innovation team, is assessed using a questionnaire. The questionnaire is based on a company innovation audit model proposed by Mann and influenced by the creativity model of Baille. Results are discussed which show significant innovation development when using TRIZ. The efficacy of training key workers in systematic problem solving and creative methods is discussed and the implications for managers in innovation promotion and workplace environment change are highlighted
Preparation and structural analysis of (±)-cis-ethyl 2-sulfanylidenedecahydro-1,6-naphthyridine-6-carboxylate and (±)-trans-ethyl 2-oxooctahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-c]pyridine-5-carboxylate
Bicycle ring closure on a mixture of (4aS,8aR)- and (4aR,8aS)-ethyl 2-oxodecahydro-1,6-naphthyridine-6-carboxylate, followed by conversion of the separated cis and trans isomers to the corresponding thioamide derivatives, gave (4aSR,8aRS)-ethyl 2-sulfanylidenedecahydro-1,6-naphthyridine-6-carboxylate, C11H18N2O2S. Structural analysis of this thioamide revealed a structure with two crystallographically independent conformers per asymmetric unit (Z′ = 2). The reciprocal bicycle ring closure on (3aRS,7aRS)-ethyl 2-oxooctahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-c]pyridine-5-carboxyl-ate, C10H16N2O3, was also accomplished in good overall yield. Here the five-membered ring is disordered over two positions, so that both enantiomers are represented in the asymmetric unit. The compounds act as key intermediates towards the synthesis of potential new polycyclic medicinal chemical structures
CE 621 Syllabus: Research Design
This course provides the fundamentals of research design and program evaluation. Current methods of research design and evaluation in counseling practice and school settings will be discussed
CE 690 Syllabus: Counseling Internship
This course provides a practical, field-‐based experience (minimum of 600 hours, at least 240 of which are direct service) in a school or community setting. This experience may be arranged with supervision coordinated through the CE Internship Coordinator and an on-‐site supervisor. A total of six (6) credits of internship work must be completed. Prerequisite: CE 680 – Counseling Practicum, with a letter grade of B or better

The caustic ring singularity
I investigate the caustics produced by the fall of collisionless dark matter
in and out of a galaxy in the limit of negligible velocity dispersion. The
outer caustics are spherical shells enveloping the galaxy. The inner caustics
are rings. These are located near where the particles with the most angular
momentum are at their distance of closest approach to the galactic center. The
surface of a caustic ring is a closed tube whose cross-section is a
catastrophe. It has three cusps amongst which exists a discrete symmetry.
A detailed analysis is given in the limit where the flow of particles is
axially and reflection symmetric and where the transverse dimensions of the
ring are small compared to the ring radius. Five parameters describe the
caustic in that limit. The relations between these parameters and the initial
velocity distribution of the particles are derived. The structure of the
caustic ring is used to predict the shape of the bump produced in a galactic
rotation curve by a caustic ring lying in the galactic plane.Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures, a minor comment has been adde

CE 601 Syllabus: Foundations of Counseling
This introductory counseling course is designed to provide students with an orientation to the field of counseling. It will familiarize students with the assumptions, theories, strategies, applications, and ethical and legal considerations related to development in counseling. Students will be introduced to the core requirements and multicultural competencies necessary to becoming a counselor, the various employment opportunities and settings in the counseling profession, and the roles and functions of counselors in these settings. Central to this course will be an on-‐going self-‐evaluation of the students’ attitudes, values, interpersonal skills, and motives for choosing counseling as a potential profession. Threaded throughout the course will be the concept of counselor as social change agent and advocate for clients, the community, and the counseling profession. The primary purpose of the course, however, is to provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice the basic skills of helping
CE 534 Syllabus: Human Relations and Diversity
The purpose of this course is to: (1) promote student growth and development through the learning and practice of basic communication and helping skills; (2) study cultural diversity as it relates to human relations and communication; (3) examine gender and sexual orientation in terms of human relations and communication; and (4) address human relations and communication as they relate to special populations (persons with disabilities, older adults, economically disadvantaged individuals, children, etc.) Grade only. This course will also cover substance abuse issues as relates to diverse cultures, specifically as addressed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 59
CE 680 Syllabus: Counseling Practicum
This class is intended to enhance the counseling skills and conceptualization processes acquired through direct counseling experience, supervision and classroom interaction. The course is designed to prepare counselors for the upcoming internship experience and development as independent professional counselors. The evidence provided through the quality of the course requirements, demonstration of maturity, personal insight and professional presentation as appropriate to the counseling profession, will determine the course grade
