A series of emissive ribonucleoside purine mimics, all comprised of an isothiazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidine core, was prepared using a divergent pathway involving a key Thorpe-Ziegler cyclization. In addition to an adenosine and a guanosine mimic, analogues of the noncanonical xanthosine, isoguanosine, and 2-aminoadenosine were also synthesized and found to be emissive. Isothiazolo 2-aminoadenosine, an adenosine surrogate, was found to be particularly emissive and effectively deaminated by adenosine deaminase. Competitive studies with adenosine deaminase with each analogue in combination with native adenosine showed preference for the native substrate while still deaminating the isothiazolo analogues

Analysis of stray current induced by cathodic protection on steel-framed masonry structures

    Get PDF
Cathodic protection (CP) has been successfully employed to protect steel-framed masonry buildings from corrosion related damage. When a CP system is installed to protect the structural members, other metallic items which are within the fabric of the structure but are not in direct electrical continuity may suffer from stray current interactions, resulting in accelerated corrosion of the discontinuous items. Therefore, these must be considered when CP systems are designed prior to installation. This paper presents both experimental and numerical studies into the risk and extent of stray current corrosion in steel-framed masonry structures when subject to impressed current cathodic protection. The objective is to allow CP systems to be optimised so that interference is minimised without compromising the technical or cost benefits of this method of corrosion control

Influence of shear reinforcement corrosion on the performance of under-reinforced concrete beams

    Get PDF
The in-service performance of reinforced concrete beams can be severely affected through cor-rosion of the steel reinforcement when it becomes subjected to harsh corrosive environments containing chlo-rides and carbon dioxide. In such instances, corrosion is likely to occur in the steel reinforcement, with the expansive nature of the corrosion products likely to induce cracking and spalling of the concrete. A loss of structural integrity (stiffness) will occur and this can severely influence the serviceability of the member. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between degree of corrosion and loss of stiffness in corrosion damaged under-reinforced concrete beams. Beams (100mm x 150mm cross section) were subjected to accelerated corrosion in the laboratory and subsequently tested in flexure to failure. The paper reports on the results of these tests and relates the degree of corrosion in the main steel to the percentage loss in stiffness in the concrete beams

‘The only time I feel girly is when I go out’: Drinking stories, Teenage girls, and respectable femininities

Over the past decade or so, there has been a growing concern in public and policy discourse that contemporary British young women are drinking in ever- greater quantities at an ever-younger age. Titis paper is based on a small-scale doctoral research into young women's smoking and drinking practice in a town in Southern England, and explores how teenage girls perform, negotiate and scrutinize legitimate generational drinking femininities. The article, using a feminist poststructuralist analysis, particularly focuses on the use of teenage girls' cultural and material practices, especially the use of stories and snapshots in enabling girls to navigate and negotiate shifting gendered alcohol discourses

Influence of constituents on the properties of self compacting repair materials

The paper presents the results of laboratory tests and field application in a highway bridge of self compacting repair materials. Three commercially available repair materials and one specially designed self compacting concrete were used in the study. The properties investigated were shrinkage, creep, elastic modulus and modulus of rupture. In addition, the field investigation determined flowing characteristics, compactibility and placing procedure of the flowing materials. The laboratory results show that the constituents of the mixtures greatly influence the basic properties of the materials. Inclusion of coarse aggregate in the mixture generally lowered the free shrinkage and modulus of rupture. Creep was highest in the material with polymer modification but creep recovery was lowest where large size aggregate was present. The elastic modulus was also influenced by the addition of coarse aggregate and copolymers The field results show that the materials can be placed and compacted satisfactorily without the aid of mechanical equipment

Thermal characterisation of Composite Insulation Panels using a vacuum insulated core

Composite Insulation Panels (CIPs) are used in building envelopes due to their thermal insulation properties, lightweight, aesthetics and ease of production and installation. In this paper, an advanced thermal insulation core material (vacuum insulation) with a thermal conductivity of 5-8 mWm-1K-1 has been investigated as core material for enhancing the thermal insulation performance of CIPs. Results revealed a significant reduction in heat loss and improvement in thermal performance of the vacuum insulation compared to that of the conventional extruded polystyrene (XPS) core material. It was determined that the CIP with a vacuum insulation core had a thermal transmission of 0.38 Wm-2K-1 compared to 0.78 Wm-2K-1 for XPS core of equivalent thickness at the centre of the panel. This represents a 51% reduction in heat loss through the vacuum insulated CIP

The adolescent in conflict with the law is the one who gets involved with the practice of illegal acts, being an aspect of violence that most concern these days and that has shown an increase over the years since violence itself is considered a public health problem. The study of this subject is of fundamental importance in order to deepens psychological understanding of the dynamics between factors that affect the criminal conduct and deviant behaviors. The present study proposes to investigate aspects that influence these individuals to become involved with practice of violent acts. It’s composed of two sections. The first section, theoretical, aimed to, through contributions from psychoanalytic theory, understand how the adolescent identifies himself with this behavior as from his life history and role models in the family. It was observed that the parent patterns are of fundamental importance in how these individuals identify themselves with deviant behaviors, therefore, liable of state intervention through the condemnation of the adolescent said in conflict with the law to fulfill a SocioEducative Measure (SEM). The second section, of empirical nature, was developed from qualitative methodological assumptions, this study had a sample of ten teenager under SEM in one unit of the Socioeducative Assistance Foundation of Rio Grande do Sul. All adolescents answered a Personal Information Data Sheet and Socio demographic, to the interview InternationalNeuropsychiatric MINI Interview and a semistructured interview. This interview was guided by three axes: a) the life history of participants; b) the experiences of violence; and c) the role models. The results were analyzed through the content analysis method and interpreted in the light of Psychoanalytic theoretical assumptions. Record units were identified which resulted in three final categories, which were illustrated with vignettes of the participants reports: a) childhood marked by a context of abandon and violence; b) identification and parental models; and c) uncertain future. The issues raised in the study allow to understand the involvement of teenagers with violence and the practice of criminal transgressions as result of a life story with meaningful experiences of dropout within a context marked by experiences of violence. The family, also inserted in this context, is incapable of breaking with the dynamic of the disharmonious relationships and consequently is the first and most important identification model that the child finds. Being, in large part, on parental models identified with the practice of offenses, that the young will shape his personality. The construction of an alternative life project is essential to break this cycle of violence, since most part of the participants envisions a unreal future in which recidivism in the commission of offenses is what presents itself closer to reality of these adolescents.O adolescente em conflito com a lei é aquele que se envolve com a prática de atos infracionais, um dos aspectos da violência que mais preocupam nos dias de hoje e que tem apresentado um aumento ao longo dos anos, a ponto de própria violência ser considerada um problema de saúde pública.
