Results and prospects on registration of reflected Cherenkov light of EAS from cosmic particles above 10^{15} eV
We give an overview of the SPHERE experiment based on detection of reflected
Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (Cherenkov light) from extensive air showers in the
energy region E>10^{15} eV. A brief history of the reflected Cherenkov light
technique is given; the observations carried out with the SPHERE-2 detector are
summarized; the methods of the experimental datasample analysis are described.
The first results on the primary cosmic ray all-nuclei energy spectrum and mass
composition are presented. Finally, the prospects of the SPHERE experiment and
the reflected Cherenkov light technique are given.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proc. PANIC-201
Search for polarization from the prompt gamma-ray emission of GRB 041219a with SPI on INTEGRAL
Measuring the polarization of the prompt γ-ray emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can significantly improve our understanding of both the GRB emission mechanisms as well as the underlying engine driving the explosion. We searched for polarization in the prompt γ-ray emission of GRB 041219a with the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL. Using multiple-detector coincidence events in the 100-350 keV energy band, our analysis yields a polarization fraction from this GRB of 98%+/-33%. Statistically, we cannot claim a polarization detection from this source. Moreover, different event selection criteria lead to even less significant polarization fractions, e.g., lower polarization fractions are obtained when higher energies are included in the analysis. We cannot strongly rule out the possibility that the measured modulation is dominated by instrumental systematics. Therefore, SPI observations of GRB 041219a do not significantly constrain GRB models. However, this measurement demonstrates the capability of SPI to measure polarization, as well as the techniques developed for this analysis
Force Modulating Dynamic Disorder: Physical Theory of Catch-slip bond Transitions in Receptor-Ligand Forced Dissociation Experiments
Recently experiments showed that some adhesive receptor-ligand complexes
increase their lifetimes when they are stretched by mechanical force, while the
force increase beyond some thresholds their lifetimes decrease. Several
specific chemical kinetic models have been developed to explain the intriguing
transitions from the "catch-bonds" to the "slip-bonds". In this work we suggest
that the counterintuitive forced dissociation of the complexes is a typical
rate process with dynamic disorder. An uniform one-dimension force modulating
Agmon-Hopfield model is used to quantitatively describe the transitions
observed in the single bond P-selctin glycoprotein ligand
1(PSGL-1)P-selectin forced dissociation experiments, which were respectively
carried out on the constant force [Marshall, {\it et al.}, (2003) Nature {\bf
423}, 190-193] and the force steady- or jump-ramp [Evans {\it et al.}, (2004)
Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA {\bf 98}, 11281-11286] modes. Our calculation shows
that the novel catch-slip bond transition arises from a competition of the two
components of external applied force along the dissociation reaction coordinate
and the complex conformational coordinate: the former accelerates the
dissociation by lowering the height of the energy barrier between the bound and
free states (slip), while the later stabilizes the complex by dragging the
system to the higher barrier height (catch).Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitte
Pinning of magnetic domain walls in multiferroics
The behavior of antiferromagnetic domain wall (ADW) against the background of
a periodic ferroelectric domain structure has been investigated. It has been
shown that the structure and the energy of ADW change due to the interaction
with a ferroelectric domain structure. The ferroelectric domain boundaries play
the role of pins for magnetic spins, the spin density changes in the vicinity
of ferroelectric walls. The ADW energy becomes a periodical function on a
coordinate which is the position of ADW relative to the ferroelectric domain
structure. It has been shown that the energy of the magnetic domain wall
attains minimum values when the center of the ADW coincides with the
ferroelectric wall and the periodic ferroelectric structure creates periodic
coercitivity for the ADW. The neighbouring equilibrium states of the ADW are
separated by a finite potential barrier.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
POLARIZATION MEASUREMENT OF GRB 041219A WITH SPI
Measuring the polarization of the prompt gamma-ray emission from GRBs can signicantly improve our understanding of both the GRB emission mechanisms, as well as of the underlying engine driving the explosion. Therefore, SPI observations of GRB 041219a do not significantly constrain GRB models. Performance of a 13-Stage Development Compressor for the J40-WE-24 Engine at Equivalent Speeds from 30 to 112 Percent of Design
The performance of a 13-stage development comressor for the J40-WE-24 engine has been determined at equivalent speeds from 30 to 112 percent of design. The design total-pressure ratio of 6.0 and the design weight flow of 164 pounds per second were not attained, An analysis was conducted to determine the reasons for the poor performance at the design and over-design speed. The analysis indicated that most of the difficulty could be attributed to the fact that the first stage was overcompromised to favor part-speed performance
