Temperature-dependent spin gap and singlet ground state in BaCuSi2O6
Bulk magnetic measurements and inelastic neutron scattering were used to
investigate the spin-singlet ground state and magnetic gap excitations in
BaCuSi2O6, a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromagnet with a bilayer structure. The
results are well described by a model based on weakly interacting
antiferromagnetic dimers. A strongly temperature-dependent dispersion in the
gap modes was found. We suggest that the observed excitations are analogous to
magneto-excitons in light rare-earth compounds, but are an intrinsic property
of a simple Heisenberg Hamiltonian for the S=1/2 magnetic bilayer.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, REVTeX and PS for text, PS for figures direct

Catalytic and conductivity studies in two dimensional coordination polymers built with a thiazole based ligand
The employment of the commercial availiable organic ligand 2-mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazoleacetic acid (H2L) in Zn and Cd chemistry yields two-dimensional (2D) coordation polymers (CPs) with pseudopolymorphic character. Thermal, catalytic and conductivity studies are discussed
Completeness and decidability results for hybrid(ised) logics
Adding to the modal description of transition structures the ability to refer to specific states, hybrid(ised) logics provide an interesting framework for the specification of reconfigurable systems. The qualifier ‘hybrid(ised)’ refers to a generic method of developing, on top of whatever specification logic is used to model software configurations, the elements of an hybrid language, including nominals and modalities. In such a context, this paper shows how a calculus for a hybrid(ised) logic can be generated from a calculus of the base logic and that, moreover, it preserves soundness and completeness. A second contribution establishes that hybridising a decidable logic also gives rise to a decidable hybrid(ised) one. These results pave the way to the development of dedicated proof tools for such logics used in the design of reconfigurable systems
Measurement of the Longitudinal Spin Transfer to Lambda and Anti-Lambda Hyperons in Polarised Muon DIS
The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda
hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an
unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin
transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation
region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x
and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while
D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The
resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and
D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the
frame of recent model calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
GMOs: Non-Health Issues
The controversy over genetically modified [GM] organisms is often framed in terms of possible hazards for human health. Articles in a previous volume of this *Encyclopedia* give a general overview of GM crops [@Mulvaney2014] and specifically examine human health [@Nordgard2014] and labeling [@Bruton2014] issues surrounding GM organisms. This article explores several other aspects of the controversy: environmental concerns, political and legal disputes, and the aim of "feeding the world" and promoting food security. Rather than discussing abstract, hypothetical GM organisms, this article explores the consequences of the GM organisms that have actually been deployed in the particular contexts that they have been deployed, on the belief that there is little point in discussing GM organisms in an idealized or context-independent way
Measurement of high-p_T Single Electrons from Heavy-Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
The momentum distribution of electrons from decays of heavy flavor (charm and
beauty) for midrapidity |y| < 0.35 in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV has
been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC) over the transverse momentum range 0.3 < p_T < 9 GeV/c. Two independent
methods have been used to determine the heavy flavor yields, and the results
are in good agreement with each other. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log
pQCD calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental
uncertainties, with the data/theory ratio of 1.72 +/- 0.02^stat +/- 0.19^sys
for 0.3 < p_T < 9 GeV/c. The total charm production cross section at this
energy has also been deduced to be sigma_(c c^bar) = 567 +/- 57^stat +/-

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
