The Role of HCE in a Political Statirist's Mock Campaign for Governor

The state of Hawai'i is unique because no single ethnic group constitutes a majority (Sato, 1994). However, the population is far fiom being a 'hannonious melting pot' with racial tensions even considered a problem in the schools (Watson-Gegeo, 1990). Kawamoto (1993) describes the residents as reflecting a "mosaic" of ethnic integration with identities being investigated, preserved, and celebrated. Nevertheless, the people of Hawai'i do share a common language, Hawai'i Creole English (HCE), which is spoken by just under half of the state's population of over one million residents (Romaine, 1994). As a descendant of the Hawai'i Pidgin English (HPE) developed by immigrant sugarcane plantation workers from about 1890-1910 (Reineke, 1969; Sato, 19S5), HCE serves as a marker of "local" identity that unites the otherwise diverse population (Kawamoto, 1993; Sato, 1991; Watson-Gegeo, 1990). This solidarity function is thought to be associated with a pride in belonging to the group and would be extended to positive attitudes toward the language ofthe group (HCE), but this is not the case. ln this paper, I will first explore the history of language in the islands, the domains and functions of HCE use, the specific linguistic structures and features that characterize it apart from Standard English (SE), and the research on attitudes toward HCE. This framework will then be applied to ananalysis ofone speaker's use of the language

    Get PDF
This study searched to analyze the reach of interlinguistic transfer during oral production from the learner’s metacognitive point of view. A quali-quantitive methodology was followed. An open questionnaire was applied to a sample of English and French students from an advanced level. Data generated the domains of perception of transfer: lexical-semantic, syntactic, pragmatic, communicative, among others. As a conclusion, knowledge transfer in languages is done at wider discourse domains in advanced levels. Transfer is accepted as a promoter of cognitive competences development through the application of higher order analytic thinking

This article has two objetives. The first one is to explain the mesures taken by the Supreme Council of the Inquisition in order to safeguard its documents while trying to protect inquisitorial secret too. The second objetive of this article is to expose the case of a trusted man that breaks the rules and sells information from the Council’s archive. That is Gaspar Isidro de Argüello, idely known as Secretary of the Council although he never obtained such position due to those events

The main object of this article is to pay attention to the differences between the King’s Secretaries of the Spanish Administration on the XVI and XVII centuries. Related to the Inquisition’s Council, neither the nature of the King’s Secretaries nor their competencies are coincident with the homologies. This fact deeply affects not only on the way of how the documents are expedited, but is also influenced on the relevance and the duties of these Royal Secretaries

Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography and contrast-enhanced sonography of sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (veno-occlusive disease): Preliminary results

We report quantitative liver acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastographic findings in 2 cases of sinusoidal obstructive syndrome and liver contrast-enhanced sonographic features in one of these cases. To our knowledge, findings in this condition from these techniques have not been reported previously. Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography showed median high shear wave velocities (case 1, 2.75 m/s; case 2, 2.58 m/s) that normalized after specific treatment for sinusoidal obstructive syndrome; therefore, ARFI elastography provided quantitative information that helped diagnose this condition as well as monitor the response to treatment. Contrast-enhanced sonographic findings in one of the cases showed patchy liver enhancement that correlated with the high-velocity patchy distribution on ARFI elastography in that case and enhanced multidetector row computed tomographic findings in the other case. This contrast- enhanced sonographic pattern progressively normalized during follow-up after specific treatment. The elastographic features in both cases and contrast-enhanced sonographic features in one of them contributed to early diagnosis and follow-up of sinusoidal obstructive syndrome in both patients. Further prospective studies are necessary to define the role of ARFI elastography and contrast-enhanced sonography in the early diagnosis and clinical follow-up of this conditio

Adipose-derived Stem Cell Conditioned Media Extends Survival time of a mouse model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Adipose stromal cells (ASC) secrete various trophic factors that assist in the protection of neurons in a variety of neuronal death models. In this study, we tested the effects of human ASC conditional medium (ASC-CM) in human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) transgenic mouse model expressing mutant superoxide dismutase (SOD1(G93A)). Treating symptomatic SOD1(G93A) mice with ASC-CM significantly increased post-onset survival time and lifespan. Moreover, SOD1(G93A) mice given ASC-CM treatment showed high motor neuron counts, less activation of microglia and astrocytes at an early symptomatic stage in the spinal cords under immunohistochemical analysis. SOD1(G93A) mice treated with ASC-CM for 7 days showed reduced levels of phosphorylated p38 (pp38) in the spinal cord, a mitogen-activated protein kinase that is involved in both inflammation and neuronal death. Additionally, the levels of α-II spectrin in spinal cords were also inhibited in SOD1(G93A) mice treated with ASC-CM for 3 days. Interestingly, nerve growth factor (NGF), a neurotrophic factor found in ASC-CM, played a significant role in the protection of neurodegeneration inSOD1(G93A) mouse. These results indicate that ASC-CM has the potential to develop into a novel and effective therapeutic treatment for ALS

Improved Access and Participation for Persons with Disabilities in Local Governance

The disability agenda has only gained adequate attention in the public administration discourse after the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of PWDs (CRPD) was enacted on 13 December 2006, followed by the launching of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 which included Goal No. 3 on Good Health and Well Being, and Goal No. 10 on Reduced Inequalities. In the Philippines, Republic Act 7277 known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons and Republic Act 10070 which provided for the creation of Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) in local government units are among the laws currently governing disability affairs matters. This paper looks into the status of the implementation of RA 10070 in the Provincial Government of Camarines Norte, Philippines. The researcher used qualitative methodology including key informants’ interview, focus group discussion case analysis and documentary analysis. The paper ends by the establishment of a framework, the Disability-Inclusive Theory or ACCESS Theory, that discusses the conditions and elements affecting the formulation of policies and enactment of local laws that provide access and other means to eventually empower PWDs and enable them to become more active participants in their respective communities
