Stochastic String Stability of Vehicle Platoons via Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control with Lossy Communication
This paper is about obtaining stable vehicle platooning by using Cooperative
Adaptive Cruise Control when the communication is unreliable and suffers from
message losses. We model communication losses as independent random events and
we propose an original design for the cooperative controller, which mitigates
the effect of losses. This objective is obtained by a switching controller that
has a twofold objective: on the one hand, it promotes both plant stability and
string stability of the average error dynamics by an approach, and on
the other hand it minimizes the variance around the average. We show by
simulations that the proposed controller is able to compensate even for high

Before 1600, ships were barely decorated, however this changed because ships were playing an important role in the expansion of the known world. Cargo ships were becoming battle ships and thus they started to become more decorated. This decoration included painting and sculpture, but unfortunately it was not considered as an art form and rarely documented. This article describes the methods and decoration of ships during the Baroque period, and how these decorations served to represent the power and prestige of their owner.peer-reviewe
Centroidal area-constrained partitioning for robotic networks
We consider the problem of optimal coverage with area constraints in a mobile multi-agent system. For a planar environment with an associated density function, this problem is equivalent to dividing the environment into optimal subregions such that each agent is responsible for the coverage of its own region. In this paper, we design a continuous-time distributed policy which allows a team of agents to achieve a convex area-constrained partition of a convex workspace. Our work is related to the classic Lloyd algorithm, and makes use of generalized Voronoi diagrams. We also discuss practical implementation for real mobile networks. Examination on total ozone column retrievals by Brewer spectrophotometry using different processing software
The availability of long-term records of the total ozone content (TOC) represents a valuable source of information for studies on the assessment of short-and long-term atmospheric changes and their impact on the terrestrial ecosystem. In particular, ground-based observations represent a valuable tool for validating satellite-derived products. To our knowledge, details about software packages for processing Brewer spectrophotometer measurements and for retrieving the TOC are seldom specified in studies using such datasets. The sources of the differences among retrieved TOCs from the Brewer instruments located at the Italian stations of Rome and Aosta, using three freely available codes (Brewer Processing Software, BPS; O3Brewer software; and European Brewer Network (EUBREWNET) level 1.5 products) are investigated here. Ground-based TOCs are also compared with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) TOC retrievals used as an independent dataset since no other instruments near the Brewer sites are available. The overall agreement of the BPS and O3Brewer TOC data with EUBREWNET data is within the estimated total uncertainty in the retrieval of total ozone from a Brewer spectrophotometer (1%). However, differences can be found depending on the software in use. Such differences become larger when the instrumental sensitivity exhibits a fast and dramatic drift which can affect the ozone retrievals significantly. Moreover, if daily mean values are directly generated by the software, differences can be observed due to the configuration set by the users to process single ozone measurement and the rejection rules applied to data to calculate the daily value. This work aims to provide useful information both for scientists engaged in ozone measurements with Brewer spectrophotometers and for stakeholders of the Brewer data products available on Web-based platforms
CD3+CD4+LAP+Foxp3-regulatory cells of the colonic lamina propria limit disease extension in ulcerative colitis
Background and Aims: In ulcerative colitis (UC), inflammation begins in the rectum and
can extend proximally throughout the entire colon. The extension of inflammation is an
important determinant of disease course, and may be limited by the action of regulatory
T cells (Tregs). In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the relationship between UC
extension and the proportions of CD3+CD4+Foxp3+ and CD3+CD4+LAP+Foxp3-
Tregs in the colonic lamina propria (LP) of 79 UC patients and 29 controls. The role of
these cells in UC extension was also investigated in the murine oxazolone-induced colitis
model.
Methods: Patients: Disease extension was classified according to the Montreal
classification. Where possible, endoscopic biopsies of involved and uninvolved
tissue were obtained from UC patients. Mouse model: Colitis was induced by
intrarectal oxazolone administration. Lamina propria mononuclear cells were isolated
from patient biopsies and mouse colon tissue using enzymatic method and the
percentage of CD3+CD4+Foxp3+ and CD3+CD4+LAP+Foxp3-cells evaluated by
immunofluorescence. Confocal microscopy was applied for the visualization and
quantification of CD4+LAP+ cells on tissue histological sections.
Results: In UC patients with distal colitis the proportion of LP CD3+CD4+Foxp3+
Tregs was significantly higher in inflamed tissue than uninvolved tissue. As opposite, the
proportion of LP CD3+CD4+LAP+ Tregs was significantly higher in uninvolved tissue
than involved tissue. Both LP CD3+CD4+Foxp3+ and LP CD3+CD4+LAP+ Tregs
proportion in involved tissue was significantly higher than in controls irrespective of the
extension of inflammation. In mice with oxazolone-induced distal colitis, treatment with
LAP-depleting antibody was associated with the development of extensive colitis.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CD3+CD4+LAP+Foxp3-Tregs limit the
extension of inflammatory lesions in UC patients
