This article is based on the field research done at a Pomak village inThrace (Northern Greece). It presents the local society (Pomak village) inrelation with the society of reference (muslim minority with turcophone domination) as a whole, which inspite its ethnological variety shows a visiblehomogeneity vis-à-vis the global society (Greek State). The stages analysedin this article are the muslim minority presence in Greece on a historicalbasis, its ethnic composition, its legal status and its political as well as religioussituation

A Study of Structural Parameters Affecting Flutter Stablility of Suspension Bridges

    Get PDF
The cable suspended bridges have been used woldwide to connect two remote points, separated usually by water. These bridges may be largely affected by wind because of the sites where they are erected, being usually near estuaries, their large proportions and their particularly flexible design because of the cables involvement in the overall stiffness of the bridge. In the present work a parametric analysis is carried out of the basic structural properties of the cable suspended bridge and the effects of these properties on the flutter stability of the bridge are investigated. In the present work two numerical approaches were used being available with the computer program 'ANSUSP'. The natural modes were firstly computed for a cable suspended bridge with the severn bridge nominal structural properties and for each modified bridge configuration and an effort was made to explain the effects of the alteration of the structural properties on the aero-elastic behaviour of the bridge. Modal analysis method was used for a wide variety of bridge structural properties and critical windspeeds were predicted. Secondly the time history method was used only for some selected bridge structural properties, being the more time consuming method of the two and flutter speeds were predicted. The results of the two methods are presented in graphs and are compared between each other and also with the results of selberg's semi-empirical equation

Cypriot teachers, nationalism, cosmopolitanism and education: an empirical study

Abstract The main aim of this dissertation is to analyse the perceptions of Cypriot teachers regarding a cosmopolitan future for the Cypriot educational system. The principal research question addresses whether an education system based on Hierocles the Stoic’s cosmopolitan theory of concentric circles, as developed by Martha Nussbaum could improve understanding among the two main communities of Cyprus, Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots. Teachers are important actors in implementing innovations in the education system. Their perceptions are important and should be researched and taken into account before any innovation is designed and implemented. This study’s methodology deriving from the interpretivist paradigm adopts a hermeneutical, dialectical, perspective with face-to-face interviews being the method for data collection. To this end twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot teachers. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed the perceptions of Cypriot teachers regarding Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism in education, the most important of which are: • The positive perceptions of teachers towards any change in the educational system that embraces respect, tolerance and empathy among the people of Cyprus. The name of the educational system is not as important to them since, as the research showed, they are not familiar with the concept of Cosmopolitanism. • The strong feelings of injustice among the teachers of Cyprus increased by the absence of any measures of restorative and social justice in education and society, after the conflict between the two communities and the Turkish invasion in 1974. The concealment of truth especially with regard to recent events of Cypriot history is a potent factor. • Teachers believe that Nationalism is an important element in Cypriot society and education. Nonetheless, they do not believe that is cultivated through the official curriculum but rather through the unofficial, implicit, curriculum. They consider the individual classroom teacher as the most important agent in cultivating or resisting Nationalism in education. • The teachers preserve a strong affiliation towards their own (specific) national identity which should be taken into account in implementing a respectful and tolerant educational system and at the same time believe that a civic identity should be cultivated through education to help the people of Cyprus integrate to a common state regardless of their ethnicity. • Cypriot teachers are supportive of teaching the other community’s language in public schools. They believe that it is an obligation of the State which derives from the constitution of the Republic of Cyprus and that it will increase communication and collaboration among the people of Cyprus. The results of the study are of value to current debates, between those involved in the negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus conflict, with respect to the ways Cypriot education could contribute to increasing understanding and communication among Greek and Turkish Cypriots. This implies that some level of cooperation is needed between the two educational authorities in finding new means of communication, which could involve the adoption of common general objectives based on respect, tolerance and empathy. Results show that the individual teacher is considered important and reveal the willingness of teachers to explore educational objectives based on respect tolerance and empathy. These outcomes demonstrate the need for empowering teachers and supporting them in their efforts to apply the objectives of respect, tolerance and empathy to the schools of Cyprus

La minorité musulmane et les Pomaques de la Thrace : entre islam et ethnisme

    Get PDF

EFFECT OF GAS-PROPERTIES EVALUATION METHOD ON THE OPTIMUM POINT OF GAS TURBINE CYCLES

ABSTRACT Recent work has revealed that the assumption regarding the behavior of gases (perfect, ideal, real) and, consequently, the way their properties are evaluated may alter critically the picture obtained about the performance of gas turbine systems. This fact prompted an investigation of how the aforementioned assumption may affect the optimal design point of gas turbine systems. Three systems have been selected for study and three optimization problems have been formulated and solved for each system: two thermodynamic and one thermoeconomic. The results demonstrate that the method (assumption) used for the evaluation of properties of gases has a very significant effect on the optimal point of each system

BUSINESS TRAVEL MOTIVATIONS AND OBJECTIVES OF TRADE FAIRS VISITORS: EXPERIENCE FROM THE TRADE FAIRS IN THESSALONIKI, GREECE

This research investigates the motivations and objectives of visitor participation in trade fairs in Thessaloniki. In particular, the trend of combining professional goals with the entertainment of visitors is investigated. The aim of the research is to determine whether the inclination to blend economic goals with entertainment is a shared characteristic among attendees of all trade fair events, or if it varies in any manner. Mixed methods research was used: quantitative research (1,066 participants) and in-depth interviews (51 participants). In order to comprehensively understand phenomena and ensure validity, the triangulation approach was used. The results showed that the type of trade fair is related to visitors' participation objectives. Specifically, the reason for visiting the trade fairs addressed to the general public is mainly entertainment, while those of the specialized sectoral trade fairs are mainly business-related. However, even in the sectoral trade fairs there is a significant percentage in several cases that mentions fun-entertainment as an objective. These results are of great research importance, but also of managerial importance, both for the trade fair organizers and for the local tourism development agencies

Psychosocial Risks: can their effects on the Security of Information Systems really be ignored?

A psychosocial risk at the workplace is a well-researched subject from a managerial and organizational point of view. However, the relation of psychosocial risks to Information Security has not been formally studied to the extent required by the gravity of the topic. An attempt is made to highlight the nature of psychosocial risks and provide examples of their effects on Information Security. The foundation is thus set for methodologies of assessment and mitigation and suggestions are made on future research directions.Institute for Corporate Citizenshi

Cybersecurity Economics - Induced Risks, Latent Costs and Possible Controls

Financial decisions indirectly affect and are affected by the effort towards Information Security. The 'Economics of Cybersecurity' should thus constitute a significant part of the Information Security Posture Assessment process and should be directly addressed in this context. As the complexity and interdependency of Information Systems augments and new technologies lead to the de-materialization of Information Systems assets, it becomes progressively evident that the conflicting interests and incentives of the various stakeholders of an Information System affect its overall Information Security Posture, perhaps even more significantly than technical or policy limitations do. This paper examines economic considerations from an Information Systems Security/Cybersecurity viewpoint and proposes new directions that may both help reduce the problem from a collective point of view, as well as lead to the creation of methodologies to ultimately integrate economics, along with technical and non-technical issues, into an Organisation's Information Security Posture Assessment process.Institute for Corporate Citizenshi
