SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
This study (National Strategy) is built on the premise that accelerateddevelopment in the medium and long run in its three essential components (economic, socialand environmental) is not just one of the possible options, but an essential precondition forgradually closing the gap which still separates Romania, in terms of quality of life, from theEU average level within the shortest possible time and for ensuring real cohesion bothnationally and in the broader EU framework. The economic developments in Romania over the past 7 years (2001-2007), with anannual growth rate of the gross domestic product of more than 6% compared to the EUaverage of under 2%, demonstrate that it is possible to attain this objective.sustainable, development, economic

Peer reviewe

Employee Retention Plan for a Maryland Nonprofit Organization
Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) face many challenges impacting their program implementation and mission accomplishment. CTL is a NPO operating in Maryland. Like many other NPOs, CTL faces an employee retention problem that affects its ability to complete its social activities and benefit the communities it serves. The practice-focused research question of this study was focused on developing strategies and methods to improve employee retention at CTL. This professional administrative study involved exploring strategies and methods to improve employee retention at CTL using a general qualitative method. Herzberg’s two-factor theory was the conceptual framework for the study. Data were collected using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. All participants were recruited from CTL. Colaizzi’s seven-step strategy is the thematic data analysis method used for data analysis. It limits researchers from using prior experience or knowledge and instead focuses on analyzing collected data, thus increasing the accuracy of results. Findings include humanistic value perspectives of employees regarding job satisfaction, the value of working environments and well-being of employees who work for the nonprofit sector, and the importance of training as a tool for creating growth opportunities. Recommendations include job embeddedness during the recruitment phase, development of a need-based training curriculum, use of theory Y management style and situational-based management types, and a benefits package with options proposed by employees. Positive social change is possible when NPOs are able to recruit and retain skilled and motivated staff
Black, Male, African Immigrants’ Perceptions of Colorectal Cancer Screening in Baltimore, Maryland
Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a public health issue that may be prevented using the screening strategy. Black people in Africa represent the population with the lowest risk for CRC. However, in Africa as well as the United States, Black people participate the least in CRC screening. Little is known about the perceptions of CRC and CRC screening in the Black, male, African immigrants residing in Baltimore, Maryland. The low participation in CRC screening in this population was the problem addressed by this dissertation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe Black, male, African immigrants’ experience with CRC screening in Baltimore. Two research questions focused on understanding the meaning of CRC and describing the experience with CRC screening in this population. The health belief model served as a conceptual framework. The descriptive phenomenological approach was used using semistructured interviews with 8 participants. Data collected from eligible participants in the population of interest were transcribed and analyzed thematically using Colaizzi’s 7-step strategy. Three key findings from this study included the limited knowledge of CRC, the limited perceived barriers to CRC screening, and the high level of trust in health care providers of the participants. Fear of results and negative cultural beliefs about CRC screening were no barriers to the screening. The recommendations for future studies include the consideration of the female population and the inclusion of participants resident in Baltimore for fewer than 6 months. The implications for a positive social change include the improvement of CRC awareness and physician-patient conversations, as well as the development of policies that can facilitate access to health care
