ANTHROPOLOGY OF EVALUATION: THE ‘MACABRE CONSTANT’
The author suggests, arguing from the work of Antibi (2003) that there is an inherent bias in assessment, the macabre constant. It is argued that there is a tendency for markers to create categories of assessment and balance the numbers between these irrespective of pupils / students’ actual performance.Teachers know that if all their students have good grades on a regular basis they will be considered too ‘nice’; conversely, if they consistently give marks below average, they will be considered too “strict”. A ‘good’ assessment thus divides the class into three groups: the ‘good’, the ‘average’ and the ‘bad’. Some students will certainly move to an adjacent group, but the ternary structure will remain. About a third of students are thus condemned to failure regardless of educational conditions: whatever the level of the class, the quality of teaching, the subjects taught, failure will happen.No proposal has so far succeeded in really improving the situation: failure remains. The reason is that all evaluations are finally caught up by the macabre constant. For a significant change to really take place, it is argued that the process of assessment must take account of the central role of the macabre constant

A Modular Class of Fluorescent Difluoroboranes: Synthesis, Structure, Optical Properties, Theoretical Calculations and Applications for Biological Imaging.
Ten borylated bipyridines (BOBIPYs) have been synthesized and selected structural modifications have been made that allow useful structure-optical property relationships to be gathered. These systems have been further investigated using DFT calculations and spectroscopic measurements, showing blue to green fluorescence with quantum yields up to 41 %. They allow full mapping of the structure to determine where selected functionalities can be implemented, to tune the optical properties or to incorporate linking groups. The best derivative was thus functionalised with an alkyne linker, which would enable further applications through click chemistry and in this optic, the stability of the fluorophores has been evaluated
Diarylethene Self-Assembled Monolayers: Cocrystallization and Mixing-Induced Cooperativity Highlighted by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy at the Liquid/Solid Interface
International audienceThe control over 2-D multi-component molecular orderings on surfaces is a key technology to realize advanced materials with stimuli-responsive properties. The fractional coverage (θ) at a given concentration can be determined from two parameters: the equilibrium constant (Ke) and the degree of cooperativity (σ). The parameters for the formation of self-assembled monolayer of pure diarylethene isomers were obtained by STM measurements on HOPG. These mono-component parameters were used as references to highlight a cocrystallization process between the open-and closed-ring isomers. Moreover it was observed that the presence of the closed-ring isomer induces cooperativity in the formation of the molecular ordering of the open-ring isomer. The quantitative analysis of the ordering formation process by using a model simulation presented in this work provides a better understanding of mixing of components in a molecular ordering and photoinduced interchanges at the liquid/solid interface. Group 13 Complexes of Chelating N2O2n‒ Ligands as Hybrid Molecular Materials
Recent synthetic advances have afforded opportunities for the creation of a wide range of potentially tetradentate N2O2n‒ ligands. When combined with group 13 elements, robust functional molecular materials can be realized. This concept article describes advances surrounding group 13 complexes of selected families of N2O2n‒ ligands, including examples with unique chirality, sensing/detection capabilities, utility in organic electronics, and redox properties. It also highlights the bridge between fundamental main group chemistry and useful application that is being established within this research field

Dès lors se repose la question du ou plutôt des référents, cette catégorie hétérogène étant envisagée ici sur un mode pluriel. On the predicaments of the English L1 language learner: a conceptual article
The unparalleled rise of English has led native speakers (L1) to becoming increasingly outnumbered by L2 speakers; English as global commodity has stimulated much research into the learning and teaching of English. Meanwhile, fewer and fewer L1 English speakers are choosing to learn languages; a phenomenon which has received less attention. This article investigates both phenomena in the light of two recent theoretical developments in Applied Linguistics and second language acquisition (SLA), namely dynamic system theory and the multilingual turn in SLA, scrutinising the effects of the re-positioning of L1 English language learners. The conclusion suggests a conceptualisation of this learner group alongside, and yet very different to, other linguistically disadvantaged group. Pedagogical pathways to best support this learner group are also discussed
