Multi-agent systems for power engineering applications - part 1 : Concepts, approaches and technical challenges
This is the first part of a 2-part paper that has arisen from the work of the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) Working Group. Part 1 of the paper examines the potential value of MAS technology to the power industry. In terms of contribution, it describes fundamental concepts and approaches within the field of multi-agent systems that are appropriate to power engineering applications. As well as presenting a comprehensive review of the meaningful power engineering applications for which MAS are being investigated, it also defines the technical issues which must be addressed in order to accelerate and facilitate the uptake of the technology within the power and energy sector. Part 2 of the paper explores the decisions inherent in engineering multi-agent systems for applications in the power and energy sector and offers guidance and recommendations on how MAS can be designed and implemented
DNA stability and thiol-disulphide status of rat sperm nuclei during epididymal maturation and penetration of oocytes
DNA stability and thiol-disulphide status of rat sperm nuclei was observed in vivo during maturation in the epididymis and penetration of oocytes. When spermatids and spermatozoa were stained with acridine orange after fixation with acetic alcohol, the red/green fluorescence ratio observed under a confocal microscope was not different between spermatids (3.81 ± 0.16) and testicular spermatozoa (4.03 ± 0.34), and then decreased sharply (p < 0.01) as the spermatozoa descended the epidymis to the caput epididymis (1.13 ± 0.03). However, the ratio was not different among corpus (0.69 ± 0.01), cauda epididymis (0.68 ± 0.11) and ejaculated spermatozoa (0.63 ± 0.01). On the other hand, when spermatozoa were labelled with monobromobimane (mBBr), the fluorescence intensities gradually decreased (p < 0.01) during passage of spermatozoa from testis (4.74 ± 0.16) through epididymis (caput, 2.72 ± 0.08; corpus, 1.07 ± 0.03; cauda, –0.05 ± 0.05; ejaculated, 0.08 ± 0.03). The acridine orange red/green fluorescence ratio increased (p < 0.01) during zona penetration (binding sperm, 0.52 ± 0.09; perivitelline sperm, 0.64 ± 0.16) and sperm decondensation (decondensed sperm, 0.69 ± 0.12). When spermatozoa in the perivitelline space were labelled with mBBr, the fluorescence was detected. These results demonstrate that DNA stability
against acid appears to be ahead of the oxidation of protamine during sperm maturation in the epididymis and is an initial event of the unpackaging process in rat genome occurring during or just after zona penetration but before ooplasm penetration.</p
Multi-agent systems for power engineering applications - part 2 : Technologies, standards and tools for building multi-agent systems
This is the second part of a 2-part paper that has arisen from the work of the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) Working Group. Part 1 of the paper examined the potential value of MAS technology to the power industry, described fundamental concepts and approaches within the field of multi-agent systems that are appropriate to power engineering applications, and presented a comprehensive review of the power engineering applications for which MAS are being investigated. It also defined the technical issues which must be addressed in order to accelerate and facilitate the uptake of the technology within the power and energy sector. Part 2 of the paper explores the decisions inherent in engineering multi-agent systems for applications in the power and energy sector and offers guidance and recommendations on how MAS can be designed and implemented. Given the significant and growing interest in this field, it is imperative that the power engineering community considers the standards, tools, supporting technologies and design methodologies available to those wishing to implement a MAS solution for a power engineering problem. The paper describes the various options available and makes recommendations on best practice. It also describes the problem of interoperability between different multi-agent systems and proposes how this may be tackled
Changes in intracellular content of glutathione and thiols associated with γ-glutamyl cycle during sperm penetration and pronuclear formation in rat oocytes
The content of glutathione and other thiols in rat eggs was examined during sperm penetration and pronuclear formation by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Reduced glutathione (GSH) content was higher in unfertilised oocytes (8.50 ± 0.29 pmol/egg) and penetrated eggs with a decondensed sperm nucleus (DSH eggs; 7.72 ± 0.56 pmol/egg) than eggs at the pronuclear stage (PN eggs; 5.93 ± 0.10 pmol/egg). The content of oxidised glutathione (GSSG) was not different among experimental groups (152.6 ± 74.1 nmol/egg in unfertilised eggs, 146.0 ± 50.0 nmol/egg in DSH eggs and 39.7 ± 17.3 nmol/egg in PN eggs). The GSSG/GSH ratio did not change during fertilisation. Although the reduced cysteinylglycine content of eggs did not change among experimental groups, the oxidised form of cysteinylglycine increased (p < 0.025) between sperm decondensation (6.9 ± 1.5 nmol/egg in unfertilised oocytes and 10.1 ± 2.1 nmol/egg in DSH eggs) and pronuclear formation (40.5 ± 11.5 nmol/egg in PN eggs). Low contents of cystine were detected during fertilisation but cysteine and γ-glutamylcysteine were not detected in any treatment groups. These results demonstrate that GSH content in rat eggs decreases between sperm decondensation and pronuclear formation, probably due to the increased activity of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase.</p
Antiulcerogenic and antioxidant activities of Baccharis trimera (Less) DC (Asteraceae)
A "carqueja", Baccharis trimera (Less) DC (Asteraceae), é uma espécie vegetal característica de regiões tropicais, muito utilizada na medicina popular como antiinflamatória, hipoglicemiante e em tratamento de problemas digestivos. A avaliação da atividade antiúlcera do extrato bruto liofilizado e do extrato liofilizado da "resina" (porção que durante a concentração dos extratos ficava depositada no fundo do recipiente com aspecto viscoso e pegajoso) foi realizada através de indução aguda por etanol acidificado. O extrato bruto liofilizado, na dose de 400 mg/ kg, reduziu a área de lesão em 90%, 200 mg/kg, 87%, 100 mg/kg, 66% e o fármaco controle (lansoprazol), 66%. O extrato liofilizado da "resina", administrado na dose de 400 mg/kg, reduziu a área de lesão em 82%, 200 mg/kg, 82%, 100 mg/kg, 53% e o fármaco controle (lansoprazol), 70%. A atividade antioxidante foi ensaiada com extrato bruto liofilizado, extrato liofilizado da "resina", pó da droga e frações clorofórmica, acetato de etila, etanol e etanol 50% através do método que reduz o radical 2,2'-difenil-1-picril-hidrazil (DPPH), permitindo após o equilíbrio da reação, calcular a quantidade de antioxidante gasta para reduzir 50% do DPPH, apresentando resultado evidente, comparado à vitamina E. Não foram verificados sinais de alteração aparente no ensaio de toxicidade na dose única de 5g/kg, em camundongos.Baccharis trimera (Less) DC (Asteraceae) is a medicinal Brazilian plant well-known by "carqueja". Natural from tropical regions, used as home-made medicine as anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemiant and for the treatment of digestive problems. The evaluation of the antiulcer activity of the extract and the "resin" (portion which during the extracts concentration was settled at the bottom of the recipient, showing a viscous and clammy aspect), was accomplished through the acute induction by acidified ethanol. The lyophilized extract, at a dose of 400 mg/kg, reduced the lesion area at 90%; 200 mg/kg, at 87%; 100 mg/kg, at 66%; and the control (lansoprazol) at 66%. The "resin" administered at the 400 mg/kg dose reduced the lesion area at 82%; 200 mg/kg, at 82%, 100 mg/kg, at 53% and the control (lansoprazol), at 70%. The antioxidant activity of the lyophilized extract, of the "resin" of the powdered drug, of the chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and 50% ethanol fractions was tested following the method which reduces the 2,2-dipheny l-1 -picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, permitting after the reaction balance, to calculate the amount of antioxidant spent to reduce 50% of the DPPH. The result was meaningful, when compared with the vitamin E result. The acute toxicity test performed in mice showed no apparent alteration
Electron Cotunneling in a Semiconductor Quantum Dot
We report transport measurements on a semiconductor quantum dot with a small
number of confined electrons. In the Coulomb blockade regime, conduction is
dominated by cotunneling processes. These can be either elastic or inelastic,
depending on whether they leave the dot in its ground state or drive it into an
excited state, respectively. We are able to discriminate between these two
contributions and show that inelastic events can occur only if the applied bias
exceeds the lowest excitation energy. Implications to energy-level spectroscopy

Kondo effect in an integer-spin quantum dot
The Kondo effect is a key many-body phenomenon in condensed matter physics.
It concerns the interaction between a localised spin and free electrons.
Discovered in metals containing small amounts of magnetic impurities, it is now
a fundamental mechanism in a wide class of correlated electron systems. Control
over single, localised spins has become relevant also in fabricated structures
due to the rapid developments in nano-electronics. Experiments have already
demonstrated artificial realisations of isolated magnetic impurities at
metallic surfaces, nanometer-scale magnets, controlled transitions between
two-electron singlet and triplet states, and a tunable Kondo effect in
semiconductor quantum dots. Here, we report an unexpected Kondo effect realised
in a few-electron quantum dot containing singlet and triplet spin states whose
energy difference can be tuned with a magnetic field. This effect occurs for an
even number of electrons at the degeneracy between singlet and triplet states.
The characteristic energy scale is found to be much larger than for the
ordinary spin-1/2 case.Comment: 12 page
