Experimental confirmation of long-memory correlations in star-wander data

In this letter we have analyzed the temporal correlations of the angle-of-arrival fluctuations of stellar images. Experimentally measured data were carefully examined by implementing multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. This algorithm is able to discriminate the presence of fractal and multifractal structures in recorded time sequences. We have confirmed that turbulence-degraded stellar wavefronts are compatible with a long-memory correlated monofractal process. This experimental result is quite significant for the accurate comprehension and modeling of the atmospheric turbulence effects on the stellar images. Escolarització obligatòria i adolescència

L'autor analitza el binomi adolescència i ESO com quelcom inseparable que s'interrelaciona i que pot crear situacions conflictives. A partir del canvi del paper educatiu de l'escola, de transmissora de cultura a agent socialitzador i estimulador dels processos de transició a la vida adulta, neix la necessitat d'escolarització universal per als adolescents, que facilita l'autoconstrucció de subjectes autònoms. A l'article es dóna una visió general dels adolescents com una nova categoria social massiva i diversa, amb un estil de vida propi que els diferencia. Es tracten diversos conflictes que neixen entre l'escola i l'adolescència, els quals, segons l'autor, es poden solucionar amb la figura d'un tutor, adult que fa de pont entre els joves i l'escola, el qual els ajuda i els orienta en el seu procés de maduració perquè els comprèn en la seva globalitat.El autor analiza el binomio adolescencia y ESO como algo inseparable que interrelaciona y que puede crear situaciones conflictivas. Se tratan diversos conflictos que nacen entre la escuela y la adolescencia, los cuales, según el autor, se pueden solucionar con la figura de un tutor, adulto que hace de puente entre los jóvenes y la escuela, el cual los ayuda y los orienta en su proceso de maduración porque los comprende en su globalidad.The author analyses both adolescence and ESO as an inseparable binomial, which interrelates and may provoke some conflicts. The need of a universal schooling for adolescents comes together with the change of the educational role of the school -from just a cultural transmitter to an agent of socialisation, and it becomes a stimulus for the processes of transition to the adult life- making easier the self-construction of the autonomy of students. Adolescents are seen as a new social category, both massive and diverse, with an own and particular way of life. The author thinks over some of the conflicts that may appear between school and adolescents and tries to solve them through a tutoring function. An adult tutor as a bridge between both of them can help and guide students because he/she understands them as a whole

Violencia y política: de la guerra santa a la radicalidad. Notas sobre las contestaciones violentas de adolescentes y jóvenes

Entre política y literatura: Estrategias discursivas en don Juan Manuel

Don Juan Manuel composed his main works (Libro del cavallero et del escudero, Libro de los estados, El conde Lucanor) in the period of time when he was at war with his King Alfonso XI, and therefore his political and military activity was more intense. Many critics have pointed out this inconsistency between urgent political matters and the time he could dedicate to literature, aside with the presumably inconsistency traditional criticism finds between the high moral values enshrined in his writings, and the unescrupulous character of his public behavior. Analyzing a personal letter addressed to King Alfonso VI of Aragon, as well as certain passages of his Libro de las tres razones, and some enxemplos from El conde Lucanor,we can conclude that there must be an intimate relationship between political practices and discursive strategies, relationship that allows us to understand the assumed inconsistencies of this autor both as a writer and as a top political figure in the 14th century Castile. Don Juan Manuel compuso sus obras más importantes (Libro del cavallero et del escudero, Libro de los estados, El conde Lucanor) en el período en que estuvo en guerra con su rey Alfonso XI y, por tanto, su actividad política y militar fue más intensa. Muchos críticos han señalado esta incongruencia entre las urgencias de la política y el tiempo dedicado a la literatura, a lo que se une –al menos en la crítica tradicional- el señalamiento de la inconsecuencia que habría entre los altos valores morales que exalta en sus obras y lo inescrupuloso de su conducta pública. Mediante el análisis de una carta personal dirigida al rey Alfonso IV de Aragón, de varios pasajes de su Libro de las tres razones y de algunos enxemplos de El conde Lucanor, se concluye que habría una íntima relación entre las prácticas políticas y las estrategias discursivas que permiten entender las supuestas incongruencias del autor en tanto que escritor y en tanto que figura política de primer rango en la Castilla del siglo XIV

Adaptación psicosocial del paciente oncológico ingresado y del familiar cuidador principal

The present study looks for the relation between the psychosocial distress experienced by the patient and his family caregiver during the period he is hospitalised. The sample is composed by 94 persons (oncology patients and family caregivers). We have used a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the “Quality of life Questionnaire” for general satisfaction and social support and the family APGAR for family functioning. The results indicate that the anxiety of the caregiver is significantly higher than the one of the patient. The family functioning perceived by the patient correlates negatively with the depression and positively with the general satisfaction of the family caregiver. We found a correlation between the age and the depression subscale. In the family caregivers group we confirm that the higher scores in depression appear in ages between 35 and 55. Married patients and caregivers obtain higher punctuation in depression compared to unmarried ones. We conclude that the patients psychosocial distress differs from the caregivers distress. The psychological intervention should focus on the individual needs of the patient and the caregiver by promoting the social net of the relatives, supplying a better communication with the patient, reducing the caregivers anxiety and attending the demands derived from physical condition, marital status and age

Food as the basis for development and security: A strategy for Yemen

Yemen has been facing severe development challenges in recent years, but rapidly depleting oil and water resources combined with large population increases and a lack of job-creating growth are making a difficult situation even more complicated. In order to provide opportunities for Yemenis to escape the current situation of widespread poverty and food insecurity, the Government of the Republic of Yemen, under the leadership of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, has developed a strategy to help all Yemeni people gain access to sufficient and nutritious foods in order to live active, productive, and healthy lives. The main objectives of the National Food Security Strategy, developed with the support of the International Food Policy Research Institute, are to (1) cut food insecurity by one-third by 2015, (2) reach moderate food security levels—meaning 90 percent of people have enough to eat year-round—by 2020, and (3) reduce child malnutrition by at least one percentage point per year. As a contribution to this process, the authors of this paper identify seven priority actions to help achieve these goals. 1. Leverage the fuel-subsidy reform process to promote food security. 2. Improve the business climate to foster pro-food-secure private investments in promising sectors. 3. Use qat reduction policies to enhance agricultural development. 4. Strengthen food security risk-management practices. 5. Implement the water-sector strategy decisively. 6. Target public investment to the food insecure more accurately and improve service provision, especially in rural areas. 7. Launch high-level awareness campaigns for family planning, healthy nutrition, and women's empowerment. The government, civil society groups, and international partners need to quickly, decisively, and jointly implement these seven actions in order to fulfill the strategic goals. The implementation process is likely to be most effective if conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner with effective follow-up and appropriate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.food security, Poverty, Economic development,

Les pàgines que segueixen són un petit resum d'alguns dels seus capítols, fonamentalment d'aquells que plantegen una altra manera de mirar-se i d'entendre l'adolescència. L'estatus contradictori de l'adolescència i les seves consideracions sobre la felicitat condueixen al debat sobre la responsabililat. A Differential Approach for Gaze Estimation

Non-invasive gaze estimation methods usually regress gaze directions directly from a single face or eye image. However, due to important variabilities in eye shapes and inner eye structures amongst individuals, universal models obtain limited accuracies and their output usually exhibit high variance as well as biases which are subject dependent. Therefore, increasing accuracy is usually done through calibration, allowing gaze predictions for a subject to be mapped to his/her actual gaze. In this paper, we introduce a novel image differential method for gaze estimation. We propose to directly train a differential convolutional neural network to predict the gaze differences between two eye input images of the same subject. Then, given a set of subject specific calibration images, we can use the inferred differences to predict the gaze direction of a novel eye sample. The assumption is that by allowing the comparison between two eye images, annoyance factors (alignment, eyelid closing, illumination perturbations) which usually plague single image prediction methods can be much reduced, allowing better prediction altogether.
