Characterization of power transistors as high dose dosimeters
A bipolar transistor, previously investigated as a possible radiation dosimeter and tested under industrial irradiation conditions in high-activity gamma and high-energy, high-power electron beam facilities has been subjected to stability test in order to understand its behaviour and help to improve its performances. Charge carrier lifetime was measured for several sets of transistors which were then irradiated with various doses (3-60 kGy): seven sets with Co-60 gamma rays and eight with a 10MeV electron beam. After irradiation all the transistors were measured and each set was divided into three groups: one group was left untreated, the second group was heated at 100 degrees C for 30 minutes and the third group was heated at 150 degrees C for 30 minutes, for testing the stability of the lifetime. Our data showed that heat treatment quite successfully eliminates post-irradiation changes in the response. Response measurements of the irradiated transistors, heat-treated and untreated, were carried out at room temperature over several weeks after irradiation to establish post-irradiation stability and assess if these transistors could be used for recording dose history. Calibration curves in the range 3-60 kGy for the thermally treated and untreated devices are presented. Dependence of the response of the transistors on the temperature of the measurements in the range 20-50 degrees C is reported
Commercial window glass tested as possible high dose dosimeter. Electron and gamma irradiation
The use of commercial window glass as possible high dose routine dosimeter has been investigated. Glass samples have been irradiated with doses in the range of 1-50 kGy using 60Co γ source, 4 MeV and 12 MeV electron accelerators. The samples were given a post irradiation thermal treatment (150 oC for 20 min) in order to improve the post irradiation stability of the measured specific optical absorbance, since a rapid fading of the optical absorbance has been observed at room temperature immediately after irradiation. The optical absorbance measurements of the irradiated samples, kept in the dark and at room temperature, were carried on for several weeks. The samples submitted to heat treatment showed a decrease of about 10-15% of the specific optical absorbance that became much less pronounced after 10 days from the irradiation. The response of the window glass plates is energy and dose rate dependent. This study shows the feasibility of using commercial window glass as a routine dosimeter in a certain dose range after proper calibration in the irradiation plant where they are going to be used
Energy device for monitoring 4-10 MeV industrial electron accelerators
The electron beam energy is one of the critical parameters of electron accelerators since it can affect the dose distribution inside the body or in products to be irradiated with a beam of energetic electrons. A device has been developed for monitoring small variations in the electron beam energy that is easy-to-use during an irradiation run. It involves measurement of currents (or charges) collected by two identical aluminium plates, except for their thickness, and electrically insulated from each other, located in the beam. The ratio of these two currents (or collected charges) is quite sensitive to the beam energy; optimization of sensitivity is obtained by selecting the appropriate thickness of the front plate depending on the beam energy. Big data and its impact on the 3Rs: a home cage monitoring oriented review.
Undisturbed home cage recording of mouse activity and behavior has received increasing attention in recent years. In parallel, several technologies have been developed in a bid to automate data collection and interpretation. Thanks to these expanding technologies, massive datasets can be recorded and saved in the long term, providing a wealth of information concerning animal wellbeing, clinical status, baseline activity, and subsequent deviations in case of experimental interventions. Such large datasets can also serve as a long-term reservoir of scientific data that can be reanalyzed and repurposed upon need. In this review, we present how the impact of Big Data deriving from home cage monitoring (HCM) data acquisition, particularly through Digital Ventilated Cages (DVCs), can support the application of the 3Rs by enhancing Refinement, Reduction, and even Replacement of research in animals

Data repurposing from digital home cage monitoring enlightens new perspectives on mouse motor behaviour and reduction principle
: In this longitudinal study we compare between and within-strain variation in the home-cage spatial preference of three widely used and commercially available mice strains-C57BL/6NCrl, BALB/cAnNCrl and CRL:CD1(ICR)-starting from the first hour post cage-change until the next cage-change, for three consecutive intervals, to further profile the circadian home-cage behavioural phenotypes. Cage-change can be a stressful moment in the life of laboratory mice, since animals are disturbed during the sleeping hours and must then rapidly re-adapt to a pristine environment, leading to disruptions in normal motor patterns. The novelty of this study resides in characterizing new strain-specific biological phenomena, such as activity along the cage walls and frontality, using the vast data reserves generated by previous experimental data, thus introducing the potential and exploring the applicability of data repurposing to enhance Reduction principle when running in vivo studies. Our results, entirely obtained without the use of new animals, demonstrate that also when referring to space preference within the cage, C57BL/6NCrl has a high variability in the behavioural phenotypes from pre-puberty until early adulthood compared to BALB/cAnNCrl, which is confirmed to be socially disaggregated, and CRL:CD1(ICR) which is conversely highly active and socially aggregated. Our data also suggest that a strain-oriented approach is needed when defining frequency of cage-change as well as maximum allowed animal density, which should be revised, ideally under the EU regulatory framework as well, according to the physiological peculiarities of the strains, and always avoiding the "one size fits all" approach
