An Extension for Direct Gauge Mediation of Metastable Supersymmetry Breaking

We study the direct mediation of metastable supersymmetry breaking by a \Phi^2-deformation to the ISS model and extend it by splitting both Tr\Phi and Tr\Phi^2 terms in the superpotential and gauging the flavor symmetry. We find that with such an extension the enough long-lived metastable vacua can be obtained and the proper gaugino masses can be generated. Also, this allows for constructing a kind of models which can avoid the Landau pole problem. Especially, in our metastable vacua there exist a large region for the parameter m_3 which can satisfy the phenomenology requirements and allow for a low SUSY breaking scale (\sim 100 TeV).Comment: version in Europhys. Virtual Effects of Split SUSY in Higgs Productions at Linear Colliders

In split supersymmetry the gauginos and higgsinos are the only supersymmetric particles possibly accessible at foreseeable colliders like the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). In order to account for the cosmic dark matter measured by WMAP, these gauginos and higgsinos are stringently constrained and could be explored at the colliders through their direct productions and/or virtual effects in some processes. The clean environment and high luminosity of the ILC render the virtual effects of percent level meaningful in unraveling the new physics effects. In this work we assume split supersymmetry and calculate the virtual effects of the WMAP-allowed gauginos and higgsinos in Higgs productions e+e- -> Z h and e+e- -> \nu_e \bar_\nu_e h through WW fusion at the ILC. We find that the production cross section of e+e- -> Zh can be altered by a few percent in some part of the WMAP-allowed parameter space, while the correction to the WW-fusion process e+e- -> \nu_e \bar_\nu_e h is below 1%. Such virtual effects are correlated with the cross sections of chargino pair productions and can offer complementary information in probing split supersymmetry at the colliders.Comment: more discussions added (7 pages, 10 figs

Hexadecapole deformation of 238^{238}U from relativistic heavy-ion collisions using a nonlinear response coefficient

The hexadecapole deformation (β4\beta_4) of the 238^{238}U nucleus has not been determined because its effect is overwhelmed by those from the nucleus' large quadrupole deformation (β2\beta_2) in nuclear electric transition measurements. In this Letter, we identify the nonlinear response of the hexadecapole anisotropy to ellipticity in relativistic 238^{238}U+ 238^{238}U collisions that is solely sensitive to β4\beta_4 and insensitive to β2\beta_2. We demonstrate this by state-of-the-art hydrodynamic calculations and discuss the prospects of discovering the β4\beta_4 of 238^{238}U in heavy-ion data at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, published versio

Event mixing does not reproduce single particle acceptance convolutions for nonuniform pseudorapidity distributions

We point out that the mixed-event method for two-particle acceptance correction, widely used in particle correlation measurements at RHIC and LHC, is wrong in cases where the single particle pseudorapidity distribution is significantly nonuniform. The correct acceptance should be the convolution of two single-particle efficiency×\timesacceptance functions. The error of the mixed-event method, which guarantees a uniform Δη\Delta\eta two-particle combinatorial density, is, however, small in correlation analyses where the two particles are integrated over an extended pseudorapidity η\eta range. With one particle fixed in η\eta and the right acceptance correction, the background-subtracted correlated pair density may reveal not only a short-range but also a long-range Δη\Delta\eta dependence. This has important physics implication, and may provide crucial information to disentangle physics mechanisms for the recently observed long-range ridge correlation in asymmetric proton-lead collisions at the LHC.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

MethylPurify: tumor purity deconvolution and differential methylation detection from single tumor DNA methylomes

    Get PDF
We propose a statistical algorithm MethylPurify that uses regions with bisulfite reads showing discordant methylation levels to infer tumor purity from tumor samples alone. MethylPurify can identify differentially methylated regions (DMRs) from individual tumor methylome samples, without genomic variation information or prior knowledge from other datasets. In simulations with mixed bisulfite reads from cancer and normal cell lines, MethylPurify correctly inferred tumor purity and identified over 96% of the DMRs. From patient data, MethylPurify gave satisfactory DMR calls from tumor methylome samples alone, and revealed potential missed DMRs by tumor to normal comparison due to tumor heterogeneity. Purpose: To determine the effect of combined use of donepezil tablets and butylphthalide soft capsules in the treatment of patients with vascular dementia, and its effect on serum inflammatory factor levels and neurological functional recovery of patients. Methods: 120 patients with vascular dementia were selected and assigned to group A (n = 60) and group B (n = 60). All patients were treated with donepezil tablets, while patients in group A were, in addition, treated with butylphthalide soft capsules. Mini mental state examination (MMSE) scores, clinical dementia rating scale (CDRS) scores, activities of daily living (ADL) scores, incidence of adverse reactions, serum inflammatory factor levels and neurological functional recovery were determined. Results: There was significantly higher MMSE score in group A than in B, while CDRS score was lower in group A. The ADL scores and inflammatory factor levels were lower in group A than in B (p < 0.001), while neurological functional recovery was markedly better in A (p < 0.001). Incidents of unwanted events were comparable in groups A and B, and there were no serious complications in the patients. Conclusion: The combination therapy of donepezil tablets and butylphthalide soft capsules reduces inflammatory factor levels and improved cognitive level and quality of life of patients with vascular dementia. It also produces good neurological functional recovery and low incidence of adverse reactions. Therefore, this treatment strategy has potentials for the management of vascular dementia

Convective Transport Characteristics of Nanofluids in Light- Weight Metal Foams with High Porosity

    Get PDF
Metal foams can be well used as ideal materials for various efficient heat transfer devices due to light weight, high specific, and high thermal conductivity. Nanofluids have higher thermal conductivities than traditional fluid, so it can be used as an efficient heat transfer characteristics medium. This paper focuses on heat transfer of nanofluid, metal foam and the combination of the two. The physical properties of nanofluid and metal foam are summarized. The characteristics of flow and heat transfer are introduced. This work creates a close connection between scientific research and practical applications of this dual heat transfer enhancement method

Baryon phase-space density in heavy-ion collisions

    Get PDF
The baryon phase-space density at mid-rapidity from central heavy-ion collisions is estimated from proton spectra with interferometry and deuteron coalescence measurements. It is found that the mid-rapidity phase-space density of baryons is significantly lower at the SPS than the AGS, while those of total particles (pion + baryon) are comparable. Thermal and chemical equilibrium model calculations tend to over-estimate the phase-space densities at both energies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 tables, no figure. RevTeX style.
